I got a 1970 white varsity With chrome fenders in Huntsville, Alabama for my 12th birthday. I rode it everywhere. It represented independence. I went off to college in 1976 and when I got home...it was gone along with my American Flyer train set. I should have taken it with me to University. So much for being the fourth child. I would love to still have it. Actually, all our bikes were gone when I came home. We only had a one car garage. That was not unusual back then.
Wow, thanks for sharing! great story of treasured birthday and Christmas gifts disposed of... 🏡🚲🤦♀️, funny you mentioned the 2 most iconic things kids wanted, in the 50's and 60's, trains and Schwinn bikes. Too bad mom got rid of the White Varsity, when I saw they offered it in 1970, I realized I had never seen one anywhere, so I searched daily until I found this one, they are so cool, one of my viewers sent me some images of his and it's in very nice condition follow link to see image he put white walls and took off the fenders, thanks for watching👍 ua-cam.com/channels/N2s93dTyzLwV30rmuXfXdg.htmlcommunity?lb=UgzjqHuZpK_OzgbMW9F4AaABCQ
Thanks, I have been on the fence for months on leaving it unmolested 🙄🚲 it will get a good cleaning and mechanical overhaul but certainly considering leaving the paint as is, I did get the matching Schwinn white paint and will evaluate further once she is cleaned up...Thanks for watching👍🚲🔧
Nice! I wish I had the room for another vintage bike🙄🤦♀🏡 Although I would love to see a picture of it. If you have image, send it to that70sschwinn@gmail.com Thanks for watching👍👍🔧🔧
Just saw this video. What a find! I did not know there was a white available, I can see why though, since it's an anniversary model. IHMO, leave the original paint with MINIMAL touch up, only get the worst areas. What you have is lik'in to an un-restored 'barn find" in the antique car world. It's too bad that there are so many scratches in the paint. Definitely leave the fenders on it! Back in the day, not many Varsity's, or for that matter, other Schwinn road bikes, had fenders. Your Collegiate's, Breeze's and the like, did, but not many roadies. Another thought,..... maybe don't go "hog wild" with the polish & clean up either, this may be easier said than done though, but it might look really cool if you could still leave most of the "patina" on it........It's your bike though, do as you see fit. Sometimes it's a tough call as to do a full on restoration or not.....Whatever you do, have fun with it! Nice Bike!
Me too, I discovered the color option while looking at the 1970 Schwinn Catalog, I have a 1970 Campus Green Varsity and was trying to find all the details associated with that model year. Then I noticed one of the colors listed was White, I realized then, I had never seen one, so I started my search, 2 years later this one came up on eBay for $129 and I snatched it 😏🚲🏡 I got it a while back and have gone back and forth on how I want to restore her. I thought about your idea of leaving it as is besides a mechanical overhaul. The more I see her the more I like her just the way she is. I thought about building a clone 1970 frame, I have a black badge and can get the Varsity decal kit. I already have the Factory Matching paint I got from Koolestuff.com originally owned by Pete. One of my viewers sent some images of his 1970 White Varsity, it looks amazing with original paint decals and he added white walls, I posted it on my community page, follow link below to view image ua-cam.com/channels/N2s93dTyzLwV30rmuXfXdg.htmlcommunity
@@that70sschwinn Now, that's a great idea. You can "have your cake & eat it too" by building the clone. Keep "Jenny" as she is, with full on mechanical and a very "minor" touch up. Varsities are a dime a dozen, but not that one....Good call!
The black Badge was also seen on the 1970 and 71 Cotton Picker Krate, and the 1970 Step-through Suburban, the white Paramount had its normal classic Schwinn round badge . When I saw the white color listed on the catalog, I realized I had never seen one and started my 2 year search 👍
@@that70sschwinn there is a suburban about a 100 miles from here for sale with the black badge and they want too much $ as well but was i tempted.its just such a nice color with the black badge .so classy and seems to be hard to find,i will rethink the distance and price.
@@faulknerfixesall I got mine for $129 plus $100 shipping. I would like to build a clone to have a really clean version, I have been looking for a 1970 Varsity frame or complete bike in any condition , then trick it out in white😏👍🔥
Sounds like a nice project 👍🔧 I'm currently finishing up my 1973 World Voyageur, should be ready next week, good luck with your project and thanks for watching 👍🔧🚲
That would be a very rare find, they sold a few with Dec 71 dates stamped on the frame, mine is a 1972 the year the Disc was introduced on the catalogs check it out below, part II will come later ua-cam.com/video/Au-jdMRHBCw/v-deo.html
Very cool bike. I found a 1976 Schwinn Varsity that is the bicentennial edition. Do you think the Varsity is the bike to go with? Good components? I don't know much about bikes so anything about who makes the components would be very helpful.
The 1976 Bicentennial Varsity is a highly collectable model. White frame with red and blue Schwinn decals and Red Bar Tape. I have one too waiting it's turn to be restored. These can sell for more than any other Varsity based on the one year color and decal set. The Varsity was the entry level model in the Schwinn Lightweight category, although the bike weighs from 38 to 40 lbs. but well built, agile and a smooth ride based on steel frame and density. The components were Schwinn Approved derailleurs and shifters made by Huret . The Varsity was mass-produced and most sold Schwinn road bike based on value and durability. I have most of the lightweight category, below is the 70's lineup for the Schwinn lightweight hierarchy . Varsity Suburban Traveler III Continental Sprint Super Sport Le Tour Superior Sports Tourer World Voyageur Volare Paramount There were a few other models introduced in the late 70s and through the 80's. Thanks for watching 👍👍🔧🔧
@@henrilebovic5229 Anytime, finding a Bicentennial Varsity is not common, if in good condition these sell from $400 and up to $800, the standard Varsity in any color typically sells from under $100 and up to $275 if all original and really clean. There are a few Bicentennial clones out there too, so make sure to take a close look. For the best value and great rideability, you can look for a Super Sport, these are usually available from $275 and up, these are a much lighter featuring a chromoly frame, alloy wheels, quill stem and handlebars. The made in Japan Le Tour is also often seen from $200 and up, these have Shimano group sets with a 3-peice alloy crank. For the best Chicago made Schwinn, the Sports Tourer is one of my favorites, same frame and wheelset as the Super Sport, but has lighter 3-peice alloy crankset and Campagnolo rear derailure, the sell from $300 and up to $600 or more Look for a 1971 of 1972 for best models. Here is a video I posted when I started and had 6 of the lightweight category models including the Varsity, Continental, Super Sport, Le Tour, Sports Tourer and Paramount. This video was made 6 years ago, since then I have learned a lot more about the brand and have found the rest of the lightweights not featured on this video. Suburban, Traveler III, Sprint, Superior, World Voyageur, and the hard to find Volare. ua-cam.com/video/YUS_GQeVlV8/v-deo.html
I have been really surprised with how hard these bikes are to find but I found a 1971 sports tourer in burgandy selling for $250. They claim that it is all original, but needs new tubes and tires. If you think this is a good deal then do you know if there is anything else I should watch out for. Greatly appreciate your help! Wouldn't have known what year is best without your expertise.
@@henrilebovic5229 $250 is a really good price for a 1971 Sport Tourer, the Burgundy is an exceptional classic color that wears well and hides minor dings and scratches natural to a 50+ year old bike.
