Bicycle touring Namibia - part 2 | Cycling around the planet #24
Переглядів 21 тис.Рік тому
In the second part of cycling through Namibia I leave the Brandberg mountain and cycle towards the Atlantic coast. I stock up on food and water in Walvis Bay before heading back into the Namib desert, where I cross the famous Gamsberg pass and Spreetshoogte pass. I stay one night in Solitaire, before cycling further to the legendary Sossusvlei. The scenery is amazing, it wants to make me fly th...
Bicycle touring Namibia | Cycling around the planet #23

Namibia has been one of the toughest and most enjoyable countries to cycle through at the same time. Being the country with the lowest population density in Africa, one can cycle for hours within seeing anyone. This often gave me the ultimate feeling of freedom, but at the same time, it can make the cycling tougher as well. In this first part of bicycle touring Namibia, I explore some the most ...
Elephant highway and the land of nothing - Botswana | Cycling around the planet #22
Переглядів 15 тис.2 роки тому
Botswana, land of the Kalahari desert and the elephant highway. After receiving a new rim in Zambia I crossed the Zambezi river into Botswana. Within a few kilometers I had already seen dozens of elephants. Carefully and respectfully, I cycled amongst them until I reached the Makgadikgadi salt pans. A surreal, otherwordly place to be cycling and camping on. I don't think I ever felt so remote a...
Bicycle touring Zambia | Cycling around the planet #21

My time in Zambia was characterised by long stretches of straight roads through dry bushes and charcoal production sites, followed by tough days on sandy tracks through national parks. I slept right next to the Luangwa river, where I could hear the hippos in the river, monkeys in the trees and other mammals walking around at night. This video was shot during August 2021 Camera gear used to film...
Bicycle touring Tanzania | Paradise at Lake Tanganyika
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
The first days in Tanzania were probably one of my toughest days on the bicycle. I had no food or money and didn't realize the first opportunity to get money was three days of very tough cycling away. But the bicycle touring magic that had already saved me many times before, saved me again this time. After long tough days in the northwest of Tanzania, I reached the great lake Tanganyika, where ...
Bicycle touring Uganda | Cycling through the Pearl of Africa
Переглядів 23 тис.2 роки тому
Uganda, the Pearl of Africa. Never on my cycling journeys did I see so many people and so much wildlife in the same country. It was also the greenest country I have cycled through. I indulged myself every day on the abundant supply of juicy fresh fruit. From Kampala I cycled to the far west of Uganda, through the Kibale forest to the mountains of the moon. Then I cycled amongst hippos, elephant...
Cycling to the roof of Africa - Bicycle touring Ethiopia | Cycling around the planet #17

Ethiopia, one of the most notoriously difficult countries to cycle through. If not for its stone-throwing children, then for its steep mountain roads. But although cycling through Ethiopia has proven to be a real challenge, it has been one of the most rewarding countries to explore by bicycle. Due to ongoing conflicts around the border between Sudan and Ethiopia, I was forced to take a flight f...
Bicycle touring Kenya | Cycling through the land of the Lion King
Переглядів 23 тис.3 роки тому
Fortunately, we did not actually meet any lions in the land of the Lion King. But cycling through Kenya we came eye to eye with a lot of its wildlife. After a crazy ride through Ethiopia I cycled through the North Kenyan desert to Marsabit, together with Simon. We ended up taking a long rest in Nanyuki, at the foothills of mighty Mount Kenya. Seeing that mighty peak every morning we woke up, we...
Sweat, Thirst and Sudanese Hospitality | Cycling through the Sahara Desert
Переглядів 20 тис.3 роки тому
Cycling more than 1000 kilometers through the vast Sahara desert sounded very intimidating. The last 3 days in Egypt already gave me an impression of what it is like to cycle alone through the desert. But cycling in the desert of Sudan was an experience unlike anything. The road follows the Nile towards the capital of Sudan, Khartoum. Temperatures often went up to 45 degrees, I felt like cyclin...
Sailing the Mediterranean & the Red Sea with bicycles
Переглядів 8 тис.3 роки тому
My initial idea to cycle through the Middle East to Africa became impossible with all the conflicts and Corona-related border closures. Then the only possibility to avoid flying to the African continent was to cross the Mediterranean sea by boat. I was lucky to get in contact with a Swedish sailor who was sailing from the south of Turkey to Egypt with his private yacht. In Finike, south of Anta...

Fabulous !! I hope you've put that snapshot of you and the beautiful little children at 26;15 into a frame for remembrance, Niels... I just discovered your adventure yesterday!! Such exquisite drone work.. Absolutely stunning series, from the few I've watched...

Amazing videography. Would be really interesting if you would share how you shot the videos, the process involved and how long from trip made to posting the videos? Where did you do the editing, adding the music, etc? Very interesting and inspiring. Two years since the trip and what are you doing these days back at home? Please give a shout out when you plan to visit Namibia again. All of the best, Dear Friend. 🙏🌄💖

Thank you for this very nice video. You've managed to show some parts of Africa that you rarely see in videos or documentaries. And of course i greatly admire your courage and stamina: very few people can even think of undertaking such a trip, let alone actually doing it. Well done!

Thank you, Niels! We were able to spend about two weeks there back in 2018 (mostly by car) and while we saw a lot, we hardly saw anything - it's a deep place. Waiting to go back - especially to some of the northern regions you show here - and stung by the realization that we need to walk/peddle the next time around. Love Romania!!

Ja, Niels, you ought to make a video or teach a masterclass about putting together a video like this. One should ideally view this on a big screen. An interesting aside: My father worked on paving Spreetshoogte Pass road. It's so steep, erosion of the road would otherwise be a constant problem. 🙏🌍🌄🎊🎀🌺🎈

Second time watching your video cycling through Namibia, AFTER seeing your video returning home to the Netherlands. As the tv commentator noted, really spectacular drone footage. With the added music and Namibia's beautiful landscapes, really a masterpiece; thanks Niels and hats off from Nambia. 🙏💖🌄🌍🎊

Finland held a World championship on a sport thats like "Mosquito sit". The winner was the one that endured to sit the longest, without moving with trillions of mosquitos... As stupid of a sport as "Wife carrying" throwing a mobile phone" and "Sauna sitting"... Finns have to make a sport otof everything 😊

You are truly wonderful. Thanks to you, I have experienced the African continent in a very unique and creative way. There are countless numbers of Africa. It's important who shows how. From the viewer's point of view, I receive an amazing gift when it's a deeper and more resonant worldscape. The worldscape you dragged and collected gives me a very deep resonance. I enjoy great happiness as I rummage through your travel records, albeit belatedly.

I admire your videos and music. This channel is a travel drama that has reached difficult areas. Every time I spend more time on your journey, I check out the powerful power of a person than the realistic beings of this world. I experience more deeply the countries or deserts that I have already seen because of you.

I never knew my home country had such unknown beauty! I guess one only sees the places most travelled by visitors. I live abroad presently and have been wanting to do a solo cycle trip somewhere, and I think I'll do it in SA. I've quad-biked up Sani Pass from the SA side into Lesotho-the untarred route to the top to visit the highest pub in Africa - was amazing-took like 8 hours...4 up and 4 down. Being in the Drakensberg Mountains is like being in Heaven.
