Our hardest climb | Bike touring a CLOSED mountain pass #36
The most challenging adventure of our around the world bicycle journey so far. To avoid the “tunnel of death” we took the only alternative road that hasn’t been used for 20 years and marked as closed on the maps, Anzob pass in Tajikistan.
We take you with us on a bicycle journey around the world and show it how we see it. We hope to inspire more people to go on great adventure themselves or if they can't, to get a sense of ours.
We spend a huge amount of time, effort and money on creating our content, so every contribution is helping us to continue our project a little while longer.

      Both of our bicycles are pretty old and you can't buy them anymore. For a high flexibility and durability we got some fairly classic expedition / touring bicycles with the following characteristics: 26″ wheels not only have the highest stability but are also available anywhere in the world. For bomb proof wheels have 36 spokes! Arev has a sturdy CroMo steel frame, that can be fixed easily, while Mathias has an aluminium frame and hopes for the best. We both run a 3×9 Shimano Deore drivetrain with low gearing and a wide range (chainrings 22, 32, 44t / cassette 11-36t), and old school mechanical rim brakes (v-brake). Our tires of choice are Schwalbe Marathon Tour Plus / Marathon Mondial Evo DD in 26"x2".

    I don't think you've spend enough time in Turkey to assess the situation. I'm Turkish and every now and then I hear professional cyclists getting run over by drivers. Turkish drivers are bad and have no respect for cyclist. They don't see bicycles as equals only a nuisance, they refuse to give space or honk impatiently when they can't overtake them due to incoming traffic. We don't design bike friendly cities and our highways are dangerous for many bikers. Stray dogs come together and become gangs between towns are a real problem cyclists too.

    • @AmazingWorldBikeTour
      @AmazingWorldBikeTour 13 днів тому

      Well, obviously our assessment is subjective. However, we cycled some 2500 kilometers from the west of Turkey all the way to the very east and then north into Georgia. If we put it into perspective internationally, it’s really not that bad. If you mostly cycle in a massive metropolis like Istanbul, it would likely be as, but we are not talking cycling in cities, we talk about crossing countries. Every problem you describe is a problem in the vast majority of countries, often a much bigger problem. Is Turkey the Netherlands? Of course not, but few countries can compare to that.

    How about this for an observation. Watching this video and your videos from Turkey , I begin to wonder if men are just more prone to being sick. Genetically speaking women are the stronger sex so maybe Arev is just less likely to get sick. I know in your videos we only have a sample of two, but hey it’s a longitudinal study here that just happens to have a small n. Having now googled the question if women get sick less than men, the answer seems more complex requiring more detailed questions. So maybe.

    It was hard to see the sufferings, i did feel myself about the same. Maybe i say a something obvious, but hope someone consider the importance of my advice: as you getting feel really sick like Mathias - lose the height as fast as possible you can, AND DON'T STAY at high altitude to recover! that was a their great mistake! just roll down and recover at lower point! That was a unnecessary challenge with his physical conditions. Oh man, manschmal musst nur eigenes kopf und korper horen :) Good luck on the way and be safe!

    • @AmazingWorldBikeTour
      @AmazingWorldBikeTour 18 днів тому

      Did you do the Anzob pass as well? We did have literally zero experience in staying at high altitude at that point. Know we learned our lesson, however, we believe that the diarrhea and fever was not related to altitude sickness, but either over exhaustion or from bad food or water. After we reached the top I was barely able to walk to the outhouse as I was so weak.

    • @chamchalsatthva
      @chamchalsatthva 18 днів тому

      @@AmazingWorldBikeTour no, i didn't the Anzob, but did some much higher - the Himalayan heights and spent pretty much time there, so i have some practical and theoretical experience to deal with it. Matthias's state and all the special effects was a "classical" altitude sickness including stomach, no doubts, i recognize it. Luckily this pass was not so high and this case of gave no serious harm - that was like just an introduction to altitude sickness, not even AMS (acute mountain sickness). Please, read some advices, be informed of it and then listen to your body! Das ist eine wichtige wissenschaft.

    A very personal and touching video. Thank you for only brining out the postives in Turkey and the part about the Armenian Genocide had the most humble approach as possible. All that while there was a recent ethnic cleansing of Armenians from Nagarno-Karabakh/Artsakh, which shows the value of your character. There is a minority, in the millions, in Turkey who will know the value of both of your character and appreciate your actions. Thank you for sharing your story with us. If people don't see its' value today, they will in the years or decades to come. While Erdogan is regarded as an icon of evil in the West (and Turkey), you have to remember that we were only able to talk about the Armenian Genocide in Turkey during his term. Erdogan still sends every year a letter to the Patrichate in Istanbul where he offers his condolonces for the victims of 1915 genocide (albeit it's not called a genocide but a tragedy). Nothing is black or white. Although he has destroyed the rule of law, economy and everything else, people are able to write research and publish books about the Armenian Genocide in Turkish universities as of 2024. However, as the economy has gone to the worse, as has politicization in Turkey increased. This has lead to the extreme difficulity to talk about the genocide. The content produced by the state, and even on the internet, is overtly denialist, which has lead to a very skewed perception on the genocide. It's very hard to talk about the topic in the open without suffering reprucussions socially and economically. While the reactions you might get on this video on the present date might not be the best, I have no doubt that with time Turkish-Armenian relations will heal, the main obstacle has been the Nagarno-Karabakh/Artsakh issue. If the countries are not in a violent conflict, it will then be easier for people in Turkey to talk about the issue. For Turks reading this comment, I recommend a very small book written in Turkish in 1921 by a Catholic Armenian (who by official histography were exempt from the deporation orders) who was in the middle of the genocide. The book's name is Ankara Vukuati - Menfilik Hatiralarim from Aras Yayincilik.

    Amazing content! keep it up, love from persia ❤ Many mosques in Iran were originally Zoroastrian fire temples or Zoroastrian places of worship. Unfortunately, after the Arab invasion of Iran, they were converted into Islamic mosques. Many people in Iran, especially the younger generation, choose their religion of their own free will, as Cyrus the Great pointed out in his statement that everyone is free to choose their religion.
