Bike Touring the remote Mountains of Iranian Kurdistan #30

  • We cycle through the beautiful but very steep mountains of Hawraman region in the Kurdistan and Kermanshah provinces of Iran. The lifestyle in the rough landscape is so unique that it became a UNESCO World Heritage. It is so far off the beaten path, that the locals even speak their own Kurdish language, Hawrami, a dialect of Gorani. Expect some tough cycling!
    We take you with us on a bicycle journey around the world and show it how we see it. We hope to inspire more people to go on great adventure themselves or if they can't, to get a sense of ours.

      What stunned us a lot is that they wish us well and show us the greatest hospitality knowing that they likely won’t be able to do something similar ever in their own lifetimes.

      We did not miss McDonalds either ;-) Getting invited a lot, we got so much different food to try and we loved it! We found the Iranian cuisine very unique, surprising and sometimes confusingly delicious.

      We are so successful and famous now that we got a camera team and support car!
      But jokes aside, we just asked some people that had stopped us to take photos if they could take some shots.

    Ever heard of a Schlumpf mountain drive? Replaces crank with extreme lower gears. Popular on trikes.

    • @AmazingWorldBikeTour
      @AmazingWorldBikeTour  7 місяців тому +1

      We looked it up just now. What an interesting conception! But it seems a bit of an overkill for us.
      We run a fairly low gearing now, with 44-32-22 chainrings and 11-36 cassette. Overall we luckily do not see gradients above 10% so much.

    Which bike would you recommend for travelling like you do? electric bike or ordinary? and manufacturer?

    • @AmazingWorldBikeTour
      @AmazingWorldBikeTour  6 місяців тому +1

      That really depends. Generally, touring with e-bikes can be great for many people because it is easier to cover longer distances.
      For a journey like ours, they are not ideal, as we would have to make sure to find a wall plug for recharging every day, which greatly reduces the flexibility, level of freedom and spontaneous aspects if travelling we enjoy so much. It also adds more technical complexity and is harder to find replacement parts. So, as you can see, it depends on what is important for you.
      The manufacturer is not very important as long as the technical components are of decent quality. We are using Shimano drive train components, and they work great for us.

    great job AWBT ... a question / suggestion : when cycling uphill on steep slopes, wouldn't it be better holding the bike on our side using our hands and walking instead of riding it? after all, we can't go fast riding the bike under those conditions, can we?

    • @AmazingWorldBikeTour
      @AmazingWorldBikeTour  6 місяців тому +1

      Oh, we tried pushing and pulling our bicycles more times than we would like 🤣
      Our finding is that, especially on asphalt, we prefer cycling as long as we do not fall over. This doesn't generally happen before we'll over 20% gradient with our gearing. It is much more efficient to pedal, even if it is very slow. However, if the ground is soft or loose, cycling can be untenable even without inclination.

    • @nemo1877
      @nemo1877 6 місяців тому

      @@AmazingWorldBikeTour "It is much more efficient to pedal, even if it is very slow." It is debatable because at a some point your climbing speed falls below walking speed and besides you are less efficient you refuse an easy and natural recovery of organism with oxygen.

    • @AmazingWorldBikeTour
      @AmazingWorldBikeTour  6 місяців тому

      It is not a matter of speed as long as one still has the balance to not fall over. Obviously, before that point, we drag/push the bicycle.
      However, in terms of energy use, cycling is much more efficient than walking as you don't have to push up your whole body weight with every step. The loss to friction is almost negligible in comparison.

    Do you have any info on going into Iranian Kurdistan from the Iraki Kurdistan? Is it possible to have multiple entry Iranian visas?
    Thank you!!

      We know people who crossed from Turkey to Iraqi Kurdistan to Iranian Kurdistan in 2023.
      Not sure if there is a multiple entry option for Iran. We went through an Iranian travel agency to get the visa. We got 1 entry with 45 days and extended another 30 days while in Iran.

      In any case, we enjoyed Kurdish people and their traditions a lot!
