Dinosaur Planet: Inside Rare's Cancelled Zelda Clone
In 1994, Nintendo would buy a majority stake in British developer Rareware. On the Nintendo 64 the team would develop Dinosaur Planet, an Ocarina of Time-inspired adventure game with two protagonists, Sabre and Krystal. At Nintendo's request the game was reworked into Star Fox Adventures, and shortly after release Rare would be sold to Microsoft effectively ending their golden-age and one of gaming's most important partnerships.
NOTE: A clip was removed at 16:44 regarding a false claim by a Rare developer that DK64 included the expansion pack because of a game-breaking bug.

Starting Over In Video Games (And Real Life!)
I’ll never forget how Rockstar deleted all my money on my lvl 90 account after I found an in game exploit to sell your car and still keep it. The same day I logged back on to hit the mission grind again only to not have any money left even for ammunition, but then seeing all the hackers teleporting around whilst giving billions of GTA money to randoms was gut renching. I’ve never played it since they neglect their playerbase and bully their own long term fan base. L company.
I'm glad they removed the teeth from the giant rock guy, that looked terrifying
But instead we got shark cards...
This movie looks like it might have a lot of setup and only a little story. They are going to have to setup all the Doomsday stuff with this one movie.
It was never canceled. It's still waiting to be triggered by the chiliad mystery.
Back when Rare was good. Now they’re only known for… Sea of Thieves.
There's probably enough cut content from the original Dinosaur Planet game to build two sequels with.
Even tho I love Star Fox Adventures and Banjo Kazooie is one of my favorite games. I’ve recently played Banjo Tooie and Jet Force Gemini, and I completely understand why Nintendo didn’t buy Rare. Rare’s early N64 games are objectively some of the best on the console. But their later games were a complete mess. I honestly don’t understand how the people who made Banjo Kazooie also designed the levels in Banjo Tooie. Well it’s sad to see Nintendo loose Banjo and half the DK crew, and DK never was the same without Rare, I think Nintendo made the correct choice dropping the partnership.
1:58 god I've heared this song 1000 times but I can't rename it. anyone please free me from this misery. iirc it was something like of an "preparation screen" before the actual mission/stage started.
It sounds so much like a Rare song but it's actually "Jellyfish in Space" by Kevin MacLeod from the UA-cam free music library
@LuckStat nvm somehow it popped back into my mind the second I read your reply. it is from a game called pummel party on steam. thanks anyways!
I loved the video, but couple you please work on your sentence cadence. Almost every sentence you say has the same rise and fall and it makes it difficult for me to listen to your great content.
We. Were. Robbed. I can only hope for the future, that teams of talented modders can make the expansions fans have wanted since the game came out, like Las Venturas and San Fierro. Yes I realize that would take a lot of time, probably ten years give or take, but people can be very resilient and hardworking, more so than Rockstar themselves.
Hot take: I'm glad single player dlc wasn't made.
Don't think Rockstar will ever do DLC again. The games are too big and the online makes them too much money. It's a shame, Rockstar used to be the gold standard when it came to single player DLC.
Amazing video! Thanks for making this.
idk how tf i grew up on long island and never knew the mocap facility was there…
Is there a way to get our hands on this uncompleted gem? i played and loved Star Fox Adventures, but i really wanna play what Rare meant the game to really to be.
11:20 - History is written by the victors as they say. Over the course of the last 40 years we've seen Nintendo systematically deny every single negative or embarrassing piece of information about their company that's been said but can't be proven, leading to Wikipedia stating these claims are "false" when in reality its just Nintendo's word against other peoples. I'd imagine this quote is essentially true like much of the other things said.
You're the first to comment on this, so I want to explain this quote here. Definitely not disagreeing on Nintendo's ability to sanitize and paint over their rougher edges, 100%. The quote itself however, is often attributed to an EGM interview from 1995 between Miyamoto, Tim Stamper and (EGM writer) Steve Kent, however doesn't seem to appear in the actual article. The quote would really appear 6 years later in Kent's book The Ultimate History of Video Games in a foot note as "Miyamoto, who is rightfully proud of his work, was offended that the first version [of DKC] was rejected. That same month, I interviewed Miyamoto and Tim Stamper, creator of Donkey Kong Country, together and noticed that Miyamoto was a bit hard on Stamper, making such statements as 'Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good.'" This is used to illustrate a point of Yoshi's Island vs. DKC, (and after the buyout Nintendo vs. Rare). It had been six years since that interview, there's a chance that Nintendo had it scrubbed from the initial EGM article, there's a chance at mistranslation, and there's a chance the quote was misremembered. This one footnote has been carried as this smoking gun of Miyamoto personally disliking Rare however I really think it's sensationalist talk and forum legend more than anything. I tried to the best of my ability to track down as much as I could and felt fairly confident that those stating it fake are trustworthy Link to the section in Kent's book and a conversation between (VGHF Director) Frank Cifaldi and (certified Rare fanboy) DKVine: archive.org/details/ultimatehistoryofvideogamesrevisited/page/n531/mode/2up x.com/dkvine/status/1144402902645129216
@@LuckStat Yup what you say here is also what I found when I looked into it. The source is the book "The Ultimate History of Video Games" written by the respected journalist Steve Kent, and the anecdote is from the time of the EGM interview but does not appear in it, which, as you've already said here has many possible explanations including that Nintendo simply asked EGM to edit it out, or that perhaps Steve Kent himself held this piece of information back in order to help sales of his future book or some such. So what we have here is that Steve Kent says it happened, while Miyamoto says that it didn't. There's not really much else to it outside of largely baseless speculation, such as questions on why Donkey Kong was subsequently removed from the next two Donkey Kong Country games even though he was the titular character, not to return until the 3D game turned up. I'd class that as suspicious but there are also many, many different possible explanations for that happening too. In the end I go back to my original post, Miyamoto denies literally every negative or embarrassing story ever told about Nintendo so I would absolutely class him as an unreliable witness, and anything he says should be taken with a grain of salt.
100% see where you're coming from. While researching this video I half jokingly said "we need to stop referring to Miyamoto as the Stan Lee of video games (affectionate) and more like the Stan Lee of video games (derogatory)." He's definitely someone who, as he and Nintendo have gotten older, tried to craft a narrative where he's inspired by childhood whimsy and so on when he's very much a businessman with a PR team
@@LuckStat Yup, I couldn't have put it better myself. Miyamoto is almost like a beloved fictional character at this stage, the guy who comes up with the idea for action adventure games by taking inspiration from exploring the caves of his youth, or reinvents rts gameplay after watching insects while tending his garden :D
Either I’m crazy, I’ve been seeing a lot of review videos on this game. Hope Nintendo notices.
There are rumors about a new Star Fox Adventure style game maybe coming to the Switch 2, seems a lot of people are covering it around this time
I did love Starfox Adventure. I would also loved to see the original story play out.
The quickest way to progress in GTA Online is to get a minimum wage job and buy shark cards.
I actually loved starfox adventures
Viva pinata ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nintendo must regret their meddling in hindsight. They needed rare as much then as ever. Taking fox out of the arwing is stupid and starfix has never gotten its footing back, meanwhile dp was a whole new ip thats would've sold better and spawned sequels.
Star fox adventures was basic, easy, and kinda boring
Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.
I like both versions of Krystal! Banger designs either way. And I very much appreciate the sources in the description! Any chance you got the sources for the background music?
This is not their last game, even in the final release as StarFox Adventures on GameCube. They continued to make games for the GBA even after the buyout of Rare since Microsoft didn't have a handheld competitor.
You've gotten me interested in the game now.
I'm not a furry BUT
Thnks for this video. Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
JFJ - I'd like a remaster of that game for sure!
Microsoft and rare should resurrect Dinosaur Planet and make their own Star Fox
The amount of untapped potential GTA Vs DLC had will always bug me, they could have done shit with Aliens, Cults, mythical monsters etc etc etc etc etc.... UUUUUUUUGGHH!!
rockstar is now ran by greedy lizard people
21:00 - *ignores Command's existence* XD
I absolutely love Starfox Adventures, played it to death back in 2003 and consider it a very unique story and world. As a teenager I only heard rumours about Dinosaur Planet, so it’s really amazing to be able to get this kind of insight into it, after so many years.
They should learn from Hideo Kojima
I tell you, its all Miyamoto's fault when he approached Rare and told them they could use the Starfox IP, if he had not we might have gotten the original pitch of the game, but in HD. Fucking dipshit. Thank god someone released the N64 version which is still worked on to this day by very dedicated fans.
as a starfox fanatic, i love learning about the stuff i missed out on or pieces of things I didnt fully get the first time, great video on a great game ^^ God Bless
Holy SMOKES you unlocked a core memory for me. I had completely forgot about Grabbed by the Ghoulies until this video. It’s so fascinating viewing the games I played as a kid in a completely different light now. Like I’m 9 bro… why you gotta put sex appeal in my Star Fox Game 😂 Amazing video!!
Thanks so much! Honestly, Ghoulies kind of holds up, might be worth a revist🤷♂ Found myself coming back to it more than I needed to for footage
I know this is going to be extreme furry trash if I ask this question- You can point to Krystal's outfit being changed from the Dinosaur Planet design, and that would be one thing. But I'm really curious to know, you know the scene where Fox finds her trapped in the crystal and stares at her, with that song playing? Was that actually meant to happen in Dinosaur Planet? When you consider how the original game was meant to let you play as Sabre and Krystal throughout and you'd swap between them, I don't know how likely that is.
My theory is that Star Fox Adventures exists in the way it does for a reason that has nothing to do with Fox and Sabre looking similar. I think it's so Nintendo could release an adventure game with a more realistic aesthetic in case they thought Wind Waker's cel-shaded style would put people off buying it.
Having played the DI2 then DI1 I can see just how much of it was fine tuned and updated to excellance.
You know what sucks for rockstar is that the agent Clifford online dlc was the one that made me stop paying online forever while if it was a paid dlc with Trevor they would have made money 😂
SUCKS TO KNOW THIS, I MUST HAVE REPLAYED STORY MODE 100 TIMES CAUSE GTA ONLINE IS JUST BORING, JUST GRIND GRIND GRIND FOR A $10 MILL CAR, NOT WORTH THE HEADACHE. AND THE MODDERS AND GRIEFERS YET, ID RATHER HAVE STORY MODES
15:38 I mean yeah cool fidelity, but like…they ripped the soul out of Dinosaur Planet clearly. It just wasn’t worth it. 😅
14:15 Holy fcking sh*t who let these guys “cook”?!?!😅😅😅
11:10 Because it was. 😅😂
