Wow! How hasn’t this channel blown up? Literally covers like every game/series I enjoy it’s always in depth and well written I am straight up addicted lol
To me, the ideal HALO movie is REACH. It’s a visceral war movie, and you can trim down the script to feature-length fairly easily. It’s just a great story, regardless of medium.
It’s really interesting how the Halo show and cancelled movie(s) have been in development hell for so long. You’d think we would’ve gotten something from any one of these projects back in the day. I remember before the show released I was thinking that if the show is real they should just release what they have. Knowing what we know now it would’ve been better if it stayed in development hell. Early on I was thinking that they could pull a George Lucas and have something akin to the Special Edition edits and fix various issues with the cgi, rearrange certain scenes to make the show flow better, and make some changes like having Chief wear his armor/helmet and replace that crazy guy with a Jackal like in that book (keeping Squidward’s house on his desk is absolutely mandatory because that’s the funniest thing in the world🤣🗿). This was back when people’s opinions on the show were very mixed and would dramatically change based on the quality of each episode. It wasn’t until Chief got with the Covenant lady and Cortana possessed his body using him as a meat puppet that you started to see near universal scorn. At this point you’d need to do some MAJOR retcons or outright reboot the show to fix it. If someone likes the show I STRONGLY disagree with that, but there’s no way I’ll attack them just because they have a different opinion on fictional media (I feel so bad for the actors that have been harassed by countless regards online. They probably don’t like the direction of the show and are just defending it because they don’t want to be out of a job like what happened with the actors unfortunate enough to be involved with Disney Star Wars). My ideal Halo show would be a mini series that juggles the plots of CE, the Flood book, and Fireteam Raven. In terms of tone it would mostly be like a gritty war movie with some moments of levity. When Chief is onscreen they’d use over the top action to show that Spartans can do all kinds of stuff that normal humans can’t. Once the Flood show up it would shift to a horror movie. If they want to explore various character’s backstories just have flashbacks to Fall of Reach/Reach the game, Contact Harvest, and a few other books. The separate universe would be used an an opportunity to rearrange certain events to make the show flow better, make connections where none previously existed, have some weapons/vehicles from the other games/books to show the scale of the conflict and make it feel more fleshed out (then if people like it enough have the second season use the separate universe as an opportunity to give us the original version of Halo 2 that Bungie had planned where the Ark was located on Earth and it would be revealed that Forerunners were ancient humans or at least just guided human evolution to make their successors). All they had to do was take these various things that already existed and craft them together into a cohesive vision. Sadly, that didn’t happen.
Hey man, I noticed a lot of your videos have lower view counts right now - but I wanted to drop by and say don't be discouraged because you're doing a great job and I can't stop watching your channel. Keep it up.
I always like to explain the canceled movie as, that time Hollywood really couldn't read the fans/room, I mean you'd think after the first upload on UA-cam of the test footage and gaging everyone's responses they'd green light it, but y'know that's just the choice that would make sense so of course they didn't do that

So you're telling me that a dude that had a hand in creating one of my favorite movies of all time (28 Days Later) wrote a script for one of my favorite game series of all time, and it didn't happen? I'm pissed
lol WHAT? "enjoyable"... "less than definitive..."??? The Halo series is ABYSMAL. On every level. As an "adaptation". As a drama. As sci-fi. It gets a failing grade in every aspect. It is objectively BAD.
I know I'm in the minority here but I don't need to see a halo movie. The premise of the game is cinematic enough and the recent TV show enforced this feeling. As soon as John Generican pulled his helmet off in that I was like "Yeah, bollocks to this!"
Blomkamp’s take on a Halo movie sounds unconventional, but I would’ve appreciated a very distinct look and take on the franchise. A gritty war movie like approach could’ve been really intense. Excellent stuff, Evan!
It’s 50/50 me being easy to please with TV and experiencing it far enough away from the initial release reaction. I enjoyed my time with it, but I probably wouldn’t recommend someone who didn’t like it to give it another go
That was interesting. Great video. I’m personally really glad that Halo Chronicles never got made because it would’ve completely messed up the lore and simply does not fit the universe (same goes for Ensemble’s MMO). If this happened NOBODY would have any right to complain about 343’s various retcons and missteps because Halo’s identity would’ve already been lost under Bungie. Say what you will about 343 (and I agree wholeheartedly there’s a lot to say), but I think we can all agree that their version of the Prometheans is so much better than whatever drug fueled fever dream Peter Jackson and Bungie had planned. I also really like how they kept the expanded universe going and aren’t openly hostile to people coming in and writing books that better flesh out the world (unfortunately the books range in quality considerably). I personally think that if Halo Chronicles was it’s own thing completely divorced from Halo, aside from the mandatory references and shared concepts like what Halo did with Marathon than it would’ve been perfectly fine. In terms of gameplay it sounds super crazy and fun. Lore wise it’s a dumpster fire. Another good thing about Halo Chronicles being cancelled is it gave us ODST and District 9 (haven’t seen that but I’ve heard it’s good and I’m glad that others have something to enjoy). ODST does a truly phenomenal job with its atmosphere and presentation to make you feel like a normal human. Unfortunately they didn’t do nearly enough to make you play like a normal human. Instead you’re basically diet Master Chief and can do most of the same stuff he can but worse. It really should’ve played like a tactical shooter with an emphasis on stealth (silenced weapons aren’t actually quiet and will alert enemies). They didn’t really do anything to make the lesser Covenant (Drones, Jackals, and Grunts) feel like your equals/close lessers. We also should’ve been fighting Elites for the first half/two thirds of the game with Brutes showing up at night and towards the end. It makes zero sense that the Elites would all just magically disappear and get replaced with Brutes, especially because the first mission takes place right after Regret’s ship jumps. It would’ve added more enemy variety to the game and we could’ve experienced the Great Schism from the perspective of a normal human. They wouldn’t really have to change the story much and your team would’ve instead used the ensuing chaos as an opportunity to collect the Engineer and escape the city. My ideal Halo would be a mostly faithful remake of ODST that addresses these various issues and adds in a few weapons/vehicles from the other games where appropriate. Don’t get me wrong ODST is one of my favorite Halos right next to 2. It’s just a letdown when you consider what could’ve been, in fact should’ve been since they sold this glorified level pack for $60 back in the day.
this was an amazing video. I always new of Peter Jackson's involvement, and that District 9 and Landfall were what became of it...but I had no knowledge that Guillermo del Toro was involved. I also really loved that no slanderous remarks were made towards the TV Show, but instead constructive, and respective statements that give the people behind and in front of the cameras the respect they deserve. I watched the 1st season with my Father after playing the entire franchise with him for years, and we really enjoyed it BECAUSE it was something different we hadn't seen before with the Halo IP. I'm super excited to see what the 2nd season has in store now that it's being written by those who Have played the games (That is one thing about season 1 I was pretty concerned about) and I'm really happy to see where Halo is headed overall. After Season 5 just dropped and people are returning to Infinite in droves, praising what it has become, I am hopeful once again 343i will finally hit the stride they need. Especially now that they're being lead by the man who fixed MCC, the game we all thought would never be fixed.
This was nearly identical to my experience. I'd basically back-to-backed every piece of first contact Halo media in the lead up to writing that section and watching the show. While I don't think every risk worked, or every character was well casted, I'm not sure why we would want the exact same story told over and over again.
I don't think Del Toro would have done this franchise justice. But I would still love to see what he came up with. Everything he touches oozes passion and oddity.
