Q&A with DIRECTOR Nkosi Roma | Return to Sender | Short Film
This looks exceptional. When will it be released online?
Will be available sometime in 2025!
Always look forward to an inside look on a film shot by Nkosi. On beautiful super 16 too…
Ah means a lot man! Thanks!
Awesome brother!
Thanks Eric!
Great job enjoy watching the behind the scenes! 😊
Glad you liked it!
Can you make a video about how you got inro all this? I really want to work in the film industry and love hearing about creatives stories. I find your videos really inspiring :)
I’ll definitely keep that in mind for 2025
*Nkosi, so good to watch you roll on Super 16 mm <<<FILM>>> !!! What emulsion were you using for the Daylight shots and what emulsion were you using for the Evening exterior shots ?*
We shot on 250D and 500T!
@@nkosiroma Excellent ! Thank you.
Also merry christmas !
Thanks so much! Happy holidays!
Useful behind the scenes. Props to the director and yourself as I couldn't imagine having to coordinate all those people. Out of interest what do you think about tailoring narratives such that they are affordable and logistically simpler to shoot? I've done some calculations and think if you do handheld, black and white, 2-3 actors its possible to make a features on 16mm for <$10k. I also feel that those limitations can also be a blessing. The biggest challenge for me is choosing what to make a film about. Have you ever wanted to direct? You've got the kit, thats a significant part of the battle.
All props to the producers for the logistical acrobatics they had to go through for this shoot. To answer your question, I think you have to start with the story you want to tell, not with the budget. The only time a film is untethered is in the writing process. Every step after that, limitations will be imposed. It’s nearly impossible to get a film off the ground, so rather than chopping up the story to make it less complex for the sake of money, I’d put the work into finding ways to get the money to make the dream project. At the end of the day it takes tremendous effort, so might as well work toward what you really want to make and will be proud of 10 years from now. I write and direct as well. You can check out the trailer for my most recent work, Method, on the channel.
@@nkosiroma ah I didn't realise you also directed Method. Looking forward to its release. Noted on the other points, thanks.
it's cool to see a fellow brother in Christ who's into film making. keep going bro, Jesus is always with you<3
Thank you! God bless! 🙏
Cool to see the Z-Cam E1 in the wild. I own a ZCam E2 but really wanting to get into film. Super great info nuggets here. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked the video, and yeah I’m a huge fan of film. It’s a whole different world.

great scene.
Dope worki 🎉🎉🎉
So, was she dead...?
what kinda haircut is that? looks fire
Beautiful work Nkosi
Thank you!!
Saw my home girl Kemi! You local to Chicago? Film takes me back to when I started.
Kemi was great! Didn’t get to chat with her much, but she absolutely killed it. I’m Denver based but work all over. Chicago was a great stop!
Hey brother, love the channel. Love this video. ❤ How much film would you recommend having for a one day shoot? Love from South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤ #filmmaker
Glad you enjoyed it! I’d say it depends on what you’re planning to shoot. I’ve shot anywhere from 1-5 rolls a day depending on the complexity of the scene(s)!
@@nkosiroma Thanks!
I'm following! It's nice to see that you all are in Chicago. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Super cool to see the process! Great insights, Nkosi 🔥
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had the opportunity to work with Midwest Camera Car on a feature down here near Brandon Florida called Dark My Light. They have some immaculate gear. We also shot on 16mm film too! Great BTS, keep it up!
They are awesome!
can't wait to watch this one!
Whoa!
What kind of adapter are you using for the lenses? It's PL to PL?
The Digiprimes are B4 lenses, so B4 to PL!
Thanks much.
so im like daang, whats this budget ! nice
My goodness, I’d be stressed to strap my career lifeline to the hood of a moving car on a rainy day.
there were nerve wracking moments, but an experienced and thoughtful crew wash the worries away :)
Thanks! Wanna see the results.
Thank you. More please.
You are referring to Super 8, not "8mm", which are two completely different formats that were used in different generations (normal 8 in the 1930s to 50s, Super 8 in 1960s to 80s) has completely different perf and screen sizes, using spolls instead of cartridges, cameras that don't even look nor work alike and quality that is drastically different too. Its only because of the similar sounding names that almost everyone confuses the two. I just want to inform people who don't know otherwise, I got it just a simply mistake, but believe it or not, it makes people sounds like they don't really know what they're talking about. I guess it doesn't make it better that normal 16 and super 16 are the completely opposite, its the exact same format, it's only referring to the size of the camera gate (or simply in simple terms the aspect ratio recording onto the physical film itself (normal: 4:3, super: 1.66.1), literally just a little more space to the right.
Can you apply a cst with film?
It’s comes through as a ProRes 4444 files so I don’t see why not.
So refreshing content, really! Would love to see more. Maybe, only if possible of course, you could include some more „through-the-lens“ footage. When you looked through the viewfinder, I was always keen to know what you saw ;-)
Haha noted!!
Nice work.
Thanks!
At first I thought it seemed overkill with the entire car rig and trailer, but it really adds super flexibility and control to adapt to changing lighting conditions. Nice work team!
The biggest thing it adds is safety for the actors and consistency for the entire production!
More of this please
🫡
man i love this channel so much
Thank you!
i know a south african name
This was truly fluid and what a hell of a team . Not to mention the Africa restaurant 🤌🏾
Haha yes!! Thank you!
Super interesting watch, thanks so much Nkosi! I'm curious if you have any advice when it comes to building relationship with director's to collaborate on narrative projects like this?
This job was a little different, because most of the relationship was built after I was hired. Regardless, I try to be myself while matching the director’s energy, meeting them where they’re at experience wise, and providing options to help inform their decisions while maintaining the initial vision. I could probably make a whole video on this haha.
Really awesome insight! You give inspiration and hope that a career as a Cinematographer can happen and will happen, if you put the work in and your mind to it. I am so proud of you Nkosi, I hope we can meet soon!
Glad you enjoyed it man! Appreciate you!
thank you so much for making this. BTS is my favourite thing to watch and I can never find it
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
*So refreshing to know there's still directors and DP's who believe in the continued relevancy of motion picture film principal photography. I shoot mostly digital these days, but I'm an old film shooter.*
This is amazing! Def need more of this
Glad it’s useful for you bro!
Love seeing something as niche as a 16mm car shoot as someone that never works with film!
Yeah it’s a rare one, had a blast shooting it!
Thank you for sharing this! Cool camera setup. Are you using any filters to shoot through the car windshield? CPL or something.
CPL!
Enjoy seeing how the sets flow, and all the people coming together to make it happen!
