It’s so fascinating to hear & see all of the science that goes into this art form! I never knew. . . & it’s definitely so beautiful how it all comes together.
The day for night looks amazing!
Thanks a lot!!
16mm is amazing! Even if you are just starting out, get whatever camera you can get your hands on. Some of the so called low budget cameras can give you surprisingly good results. And if you become hardcore somewhere down the line and want to shoot a feature or music video, you can invest in something fancier with a reflex viewfinder.
Nice one
Thanks for watching
Great breakdown, thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Just some support with the Algorithm mate.
More power to you on that 16mm film journey.
Appreciate your support! 👏🏽
This looks so dreamy, I would love to see the finished music video💕
SOON!
Bleach bypass gives that black & white and colour combination which can also help with eye popping results!
Really nice.
Thanks a lot!
thanks. congratulations.
my guy elevated the sound quality. It's holy
Appreciate you!
iPhone internal mics + post processing 😂
Just wish there were affordable film cameras that shoot silently
There is the Arriflex 16 BL. Well of course, it depends on your definition of affordable. But you can get a good deal if you keep looking.
And then there's Eclair NPR and ACL :)
The finished grade is absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you!
Love it. Well done.
Of note is the seperation the Optima Illumina lenses are giving the subject.....very noteworthy
Thanks for the lighting break down. Until that portion of the video I was trying to work out why the background seem so flat compared to the subject. It almost felt like a composite.
Glad it helped!
Cool video with great details 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Glad you liked it!
Illuminating breakdown and inspiring insights, brother! I remember the first time you mentioned your high contrast ratio idea to create a dreamy aura for our film, and it was a joy to develop the look and execute it with you. The way you orchestrated our lighting setups was masterful. Appreciate you, brother! God bless you and the fam! SDG!
Looking forward to sitting down and shooting a breakdown of the full journey!
I don't like oversaturated color and crushed blacks. Looks cheap to me, not dreamy. But you are the one to decide, obviously.
This is Amazinggggg! I'm new to this channel. Where can I see the music video?
Hopefully this link works out!

For the high contrast, do you consider using the Ektachrome 100D?
I’m not a huge Ektachrome fan due to its limited dynamic range. Beautiful colors though!
Looking really nice! 4:1 (=2 stops) is not that huge of a contrast, but it looks great after the color grading. Where exactly is your exposure? Did you expose for the light side of the face and let the shadow side underexpose at 2 stops, or is it a compromise between the two? Thanks in advance for your reply and best of luck for your music video!
In photography terms, the target contrast ratio would be 16:1. I was calculating and presenting in cinematography terms, which is a bit simplified, where 4:1 =4 stops. Makes it easier to calculate on the fly.
I wasn’t able to hit the target ratio on every shot, but got close. We exposed for the key side of the face in most mediums. It was about f16. Shadow side was at f4-f5.6. To get +1 and +2 over on the key, I had to open up on the lens.
Hope that helps!
Beautiful work!
For that blue look of the night, you can shoot in the day with Blue Ultra from Film Photography Project
16mm: (v=5lG7j5oSoQ0 = 16mm Blue Ultra Color Negative Single Perf Film) -- yes, single perf
I’ve never seen this wild looking stock. Looks awesome!
Why didn't you put some expensive glass on the camera? -even rent some nice lenses? With 16/s16 every little bit of resolution makes a big impact because the negative size is soooo small. Was it a budgetary consideration?
I own the Illuminas, so that’s why I used them. I find them comparative to other options available for the 16mm format.
@@nkosiroma no way. These are Russian copies of some older zeiss designs. Try out a few modern lenses if you haven't already. You might be astonished with the differences (and your clients might be too! ...which equals more money for more bookings!)
@@davida5296 I can only draw from my experience, I suppose. Comparing footage I’ve shot with popular 16mm specific lenses such as the canon zooms and zeiss lenses I definitely find the Illuminas to be comparable.
Honestly when it comes to 16mm, I find a greater variation in quality stemming from the scan.
How do you digitize your film?
After being processed the film is scanned through a film specific scanner in resolutions up to about 6.5k (for full gate 16mm scans).
