  • In this video I'm showing how I like to grade 16mm film. Because I love the natural look of film, correcting the color is often as far as I want to go in the grade, especially for simple videos. For narrative projects I might go with a more pronounced look and have a professional colorist complete the work.

You can save a lot of time with scene detection in resolve. It'll automatically cut up your reel into individual clips...

I’ve found both Dehancer and Cullen Kelly’s 2383 LUTs very useful on my 16mm footage. They immediately bring scans closer to a projection print look and work wonders on skin tones.

Would recommend working color managed. The input should be Cineon Log, output Rec709 (Rec709-A on iMac, Macbook, everything with an Apple Display basically).

Great content Nkosi! Thanks for sharing the process...QUESTION : how do you set your COLOR MANAGEMENT? I'm actually grading some scanned footage for the very first time..

Bro I’d love to know what digital camera you think looks the most like film! Besides the Alexa sensor of course!

The lighting is so nice on their faces, soft but bold - may I ask how you did the lighting?

Great channel. Does the 4k scan change the image a great deal, make it closer to digital? I’m wondering if a 2.8k scan would help keep it more filmic. Thanks, you’re very talented.
