    I’ve found both Dehancer and Cullen Kelly’s 2383 LUTs very useful on my 16mm footage. They immediately bring scans closer to a projection print look and work wonders on skin tones.

      Thanks Caleb! I'll have to check out that workflow! I've been needed to update this video as my process has changed up a bit since.

    You can save a lot of time with scene detection in resolve. It'll automatically cut up your reel into individual clips...

    Would recommend working color managed. The input should be Cineon Log, output Rec709 (Rec709-A on iMac, Macbook, everything with an Apple Display basically).
    This way the controls, especially offset/printer lights which are preferable over tint/wb, actually work as intended and the color shifts shouldn't occur anymore and way less work is necessary to balance the image.

      Can you upload a DPX or tiff still of the image you've shown here? Would like to see what I can do. :)

      Thanks for the input, Dennis! I’ve actually been working with a colorist to learn a few of these techniques! There will definitely be an update to this video in the future!

      @@nkosiroma that is great, recently started playing around with some 250D and 500T scans and grading these is a great experience! Also these are quite helpful for creating negative film emulations ;)

    Definitely need a split reel for those cores :)
    But seriously, I'm glad I found this. As a fellow 16mm shooter, it's so hard to find anything about color grading your footage in Resolve, which is strange because Resolve was made for grading film in the first place.

    Great channel. Does the 4k scan change the image a great deal, make it closer to digital? I’m wondering if a 2.8k scan would help keep it more filmic. Thanks, you’re very talented.

    • @nkosiroma
      @nkosiroma  Рік тому +2

      I think the maximum resolution that 16mm can resolve is about 2k, but I feel I have more flexibility to punch in on 4k scans. The look of the film doesn’t change based on the scan. If the detail is there, it will show up in 2k and 4k.

    Bro I’d love to know what digital camera you think looks the most like film! Besides the Alexa sensor of course!

      I've seen one music video that was graded in such way I thought it was shot on film but it was shot on RED. And even though this is probably a predictable answer, the Blackmagic B-RAW cameras can be graded in a similiar way too. I think it has to do with their dynamic range being split -6 and +6EV.
      Other than that I feel with a lot of prosumer hybrid cameras and a good colorista you can get somewhat close to the aesthetic of film.
      In general digital cameras have greater dynamic range in shadows but I've done some tests with the Sony FX6 in S-log3 and it's much easier to pull down over exposure compared to pushing up under exposure, which kinda surprised me. On the other side I now next to nothing about color grading so I definitely wouldn't be able to make it look like film.
      But at the end of the day the Alexa is still the Alexa.
      I'm curious what you think about this topic.

      @nkosiroma  Рік тому

      Thanks for the question Arthur. I'm definitely not qualified to provide suggestions on color management. I keep my setting pretty basic and just grade by eye since I don't have a calibrated monitor or anything. I try to employ the services of a colorist for all professional projects.

    Looks like you put a lot of effort into this video but I have to be honest.
    The film camera I’m looking at getting is $30,000, the gear to go with it is about the same price, and so is the digitizing scanner.
    All about $30k
    If I was going to make that investment I would want to buy all three but I was under the impression that you had to physically color grade film.
    I feel like doing the color grading digitally wouldn’t be the same? But maybe I just heard that from an unreliable source and maybe it isn’t true… help please
