Fishing a Sierra Grass Maze
Found lots of wild rainbow trout hidden in the grass maze of this nothern Sierra river. Treacherous walking through it! The fish at around 5:30 was a solid 16-17" brown trout that managed to spit the hook.
2wt 8' TFO, with Orvis Battenkill reel.
Nymphs used were a #16 olive or red perdigon on the point and a #12 20 incher stone variation on the dropper. The stone had orange in it and I think that is why it did so well, as it resembled an Oct Caddis pupa. I saw a few Oct Caddis flying and some shucks on the rocks. A little more than half the fish took the 20 incher stone.

Lost Sierra Creek, Remote Fishing
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
Hiked off the road into a little canyon for some wild rainbow trout. I was using a #10 green foam hopper and a #14 blowtorch nypmh on the dropper. Rod was a 8' 2wt TFO and the reel an Orvis Battenkill (click paw). I apoligize for the long gap from my last video. Just felt like I needed a break. I am back now and will be posting videos regularly again. Want to become a better at nymphing? Please...
5 Rivers, Backcountry Fishing
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
5 of California's best trout fishing rivers all flow together to form the lower Sacramento River: Pit, Upper Sacramento, McCloud, Fall, Hat. The bushwhacking was brutal and we saw lots of bear scat and poison oak. All fish were caught on a size 14 olive perdigon nymph while inidcator nymphing (Air Lock indicator) with a 10-12' leader. Rod used was a 9' 6wt Sage Foundation. Please check out my o...

A very tough drive to get into the rattlesnake infested canyon, but it eventually paid off! It was a day of quality over quantity. The rattlesnakes are no joke and not to scare anyone off the caretaker said they are "prolific" and sees them all the time around his cabin. The large fish was not broken off, but just came unbuttoned while the line was hung up slightly on the rock with him thrashin...

Gallatin River, Fishing & Battling Rafters
Переглядів 2 тис.2 роки тому
Tons of rafting traffic on labor day weekend on the Gallatin River, but they were all friendly/courteous. Some solid rainbows were caught from the canyon section. Fish seemed keyed into small mayfly nypmhs as there were a few small bwo's hatching here and there. A size #18 pheasant tail caught most of the fish. A few trout feeding on the bottom then one sees the nymph rolling along the bottom and jets forward for a hard take. The second fish later struck while I was fighting the first fish. Fishing a Spring Creek Deep in Grizzly Bear Country
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
Although it is nice to have bear spray, it is even better to be fishing with other people carrying a gun, otherwise I would not fish here alone. We did hear a very large animal on the ridgeline at one point, but it could have been a moose. There was lots of bear scat. Fishing was ok, but not good enough for a return trip due to the tough hike in and bears & mosquitoes! This is the last of 3 Re-...

Fishing a Spring Creek With Lots of Waterfalls
Great video filmed in the Golden Circle of Trout fishing. Bears are usually thick in there ... recommend traveling with a companion and walkie talkies.
yup... this is the start of the poem. I took it in the valley down. Treasure-trout. I believe it was forrest fenn?
Wow How do I find this spot, I’m always off the 108 at Beardsley and pine crest
Fished it a few years back. Opening day and several days after. Bison grazed right next to me a few times. Geysers were in the foreground. Swung soft hackle the entire time. I caught a lot of fish. Great River.
It said steelhead in the title...
Just a nickname I have heard for them used in fishing reports.
I once heard the rocks on that river were grease covered bowling balls. The good spots are real energetic to get to, so those nice fishes have very little pressure. Me and my buddy tied a rope around the truck's wheel and we rappelled down to a tasty looking spot. Lot's of LDRs but we landed beaucoup beautiful fish. There's a little bar and grill not too far from the Dak, that Bing Crosby had built. Great spot for a couple of cold ones after a great, but exhausting day on that river
Dam
Toughest river to wade imo, especially below #3 which is insane when the flows are even just a little higher than normal.

Where is that bar & grill exactly? just curious. I know that Bing Crosby used to own the Rising Rive Ranch that Clint Eastwood now owns, near the Hat River.
Trying to remember, might have been called The Outpost. Good burgers and ice cold brewski's
Gotta applaud the making lemonade effort in that high fast water. Ten foot 2wt certainly wasn't overpowering, especially dealing with the CFM. I lived in Redding for a while, and spent a lot of time on the Upper Sac, McCloud, Hat Creek, etc., I have fished most of the Blue Ribbon American rivers, but the Dunsmuir reach of the Sac was my go to. There's a spot about a half mile downstream from the bridge that caused all those problems, that has trees overhanging the whole river for about a quarter mile. One day, while having a pretty good day fishing October Caddis nymphs, the hatch came off, and it was like being inside a shaken snow globe. Immediately switched to those huge orange dries, and got a lot of refusals, because there were so many wiggling live ones on the water. Eventually landed a nice fourteen incher, that was a day I'll never forget. Tight lines Bro!'
Enjoyed your story, thanks 🍻 So many good memories on those rivers. Did the Oct Caddis hatch during the day or dusk/night?
It came off in the morning, around 9 or 10. We had hot to the spot around 7AM. We immediately saw mergers and nymphs and it was yee-haw!
Man those are some beautiful fish. Was that section above or below AhDiNa?
Above AhDiNa
You had a fishing legend comment on your video! Tim knows that river better than anyone that watches this video.
Been fishing the Owen’s for decades. It’s a great fishery. I enjoyed watching you pull some very nice trout out of there.
No steelhead there , steelhead are sea run rainbow trout. Those have never been in saltwater so they're just rainbow trout
Not the prettiest stretch of water but the fish are sure there.
Next time your on the SF jut IM me I will take you on a float.
And I remember fishing the Owens River back in the 60's. What happy memories of my home state I left so long ago...rr Normandy, France
Steelhead come from the ocean, not Crowley lake.
and you wonder why that fish was dead? Quit playing them like that just for fun wtf lol.
high sticking for the win. :)
No such thing.
Nice!!!
Rough on the fish without a net
Nice catch I love this creek
Hey PD. What a beautiful spring creek! Thinking of heading to this area in a couple of weeks - late April - for a week or so. Never fished Hot Creek and have only fished the Walker (once) in this area. Any suggestions as to other waters in the area that are fishing well in that time frame? Thanks as always; hope you are well.
I’ve fished a few of those small streams in Yellowstone and had a blast catching small Yellowstone cutthroats. Those streams for me are real treasures.
You need to learn how to properly release trout
It's such a beautiful place, but I'll say this as an observation over my years since the 80s. Sadly, it has declined in numbers and size of fish. I feel a number of issues have happened, the lack of water and the impact of the internet.today It's getting more difficult to get away from people more and more .
You relit the fire, thanks. 👍
My brother and I were out there wheeling a couple weeks ago. I live down south, so I didn't know where he lived. I kept thinking of how bad I blew it by not bringing a rod.
Friendly comment intended for you and anyone stumbling into your video - please avoid wading, getting your boots wet in Hot Creek and other Sierra local waters that have New Zealand mud snails in them as you will likely contaminate them should you wear the same clothing (unless you boil, freeze or let dry for a week). Please help control invasives!
Fished almost every hole and run in this river ! Magical place !
You not going see that ever again!
How are they steelhead? Aren't they just rainbows since they're landlocked?
Just a nickname for them
@@purpledrakefishing oh dam! I thought you had the location for some steelies that make a long journey lol. I know there are landlocked salmon there too and still wonder if any make their way out to the Pacific
@@menotyou816 There are some landlocked salmon on some of the large reservoirs like Don Pedro on the west slope of the sierras, but they don't go to the ocean (kokanee/sockeye & kings)
No Steelhead there !!!!! What UP
Had some great days in Grayling!
What size hardy ultradisc reel would balance my g loomis euro 10’ 2wt?
Cool spot
Definitely God's country 🙏. Beautiful area, so tranquil. We've had many fantastic times fishing the beautiful river in Trinity, CA. Thank you for sharing this fantastic video. God bless 🙏
Nice of you to come back. We fish the same places
BTW, I learn a ton from watching your vids - where and what water to throw (and not pass over), fly selection, indicator vs. high stick. Lots. Thanks.
I love how you leave little clues in your vids as to your location . . .
Nice vid man. So the burning question is, do you ever dry fly?🤔 . Asking for a friend😎
Thanks TS, LOL---actually earlier that same day, I did cast a dry with a dropper to a rising fish and I was able to see him take the dropper 18" below the dry, but I missed the hook set. I do plan to start mixing in some dry fly fishing next spring/summer.
@@purpledrakefishing looking forward to it
When are you putting out more vids brother?
That’s looks nice where is that in the sierras?
Yes, northern sierras (north fork yuba, middle fork feather, ect area).
Thanks for not hot-spotting. I just wanted confirmation that it’s the western side.
Wild Trout continue to refuse to live in ugly places.
Welcome back PD. Good to see some content from you. Also noted the care you are taking with the trout. So many others on youtube insist on the money shot and squeeze the life out of em.
Love your style of fishing you always get get drag free drift thanks for sharing this place wild , gracias amigo!
Hey PD - just getting around to seeing this. Do you feel you were at a bit of a disadvantage with the 3wt, given the size of the fish and the flows?
Hi Pat, Not outgunned, but yes at a disadvantage as I couldn't horse him in with that rod and that water. The 10' 3wt fights fish more like a 4 or 4.5 wt and that Hardy reel has a strong smooth drag. He was hooked good and I would have been able to land him if it weren't for that dam rock and the inability to move around it. I was stuck fighting him in that one spot. He got hung up on the rock on a sneaky strong run and came unhooked. I am still thinking of that fish! Guessing ~25" and ~5-6lbs!
You are so upset at the end you couldn't even talk. Whenever I have a big fish get off I'm usually cussing like a sailor, stomping my feet, the whole thing! 😤 Heading to McCloud tomorrow thru Sunday. First time. Any suggestions?@@purpledrakefishing
Good luck on your trip! The nature conservancy is well worth it if you are heading down into the ah di nah area. Be very carefull of rattlesnakes. I haven't seen them but the caretaker at the conservancy said they are "prolific" there and I have heard of someone being bitten by a baby one and didn't know it until later at the hospital. I think a stonefly pattern with some orange in it or a october caddis pattern will work well, especially if the water is cloudy. @@patsheridan
Thanks PD. Tight lines, my friend.
Welcome back! Random question, but have you ever seen a Sasquatch?
Never seen Squatch--hopefully someday
That’s the right attitude 👍@@purpledrakefishing
What rod wt are you using? The size of the fish make my think 2-3wt possibly an 8’ rod
2wt 8' TFO
Your back! Right on. Good vid man.
How dumb, and you were not fishing a salmon fly. They were crawling all over you at the edge of the river
Glad to watch a new video from you. Great video.
