Hi Pat, Not outgunned, but yes at a disadvantage as I couldn't horse him in with that rod and that water. The 10' 3wt fights fish more like a 4 or 4.5 wt and that Hardy reel has a strong smooth drag. He was hooked good and I would have been able to land him if it weren't for that dam rock and the inability to move around it. I was stuck fighting him in that one spot. He got hung up on the rock on a sneaky strong run and came unhooked. I am still thinking of that fish! Guessing ~25" and ~5-6lbs!
You are so upset at the end you couldn't even talk. Whenever I have a big fish get off I'm usually cussing like a sailor, stomping my feet, the whole thing! 😤 Heading to McCloud tomorrow thru Sunday. First time. Any suggestions?@@purpledrakefishing
Good luck on your trip! The nature conservancy is well worth it if you are heading down into the ah di nah area. Be very carefull of rattlesnakes. I haven't seen them but the caretaker at the conservancy said they are "prolific" there and I have heard of someone being bitten by a baby one and didn't know it until later at the hospital. I think a stonefly pattern with some orange in it or a october caddis pattern will work well, especially if the water is cloudy. @@patsheridan
Very unfortunate lost both the big ones But on the first u didn't set the hook On second u should have moved a step forward to get a upper hand on the fish which would have stopped it from moving under the boulder Anyways loved ur stuff always No nonsense straight to the beautiful river ❤
I get asked all the time how the Mac is doing. Looks like it's all about big nymphs and streamers until we get a freeze and the water clears up. Good to see ya posting again
@@purpledrakefishing I did fine, caught half a dozen rainbows (all nymphing) and had a shot at a big brown on top but i biffed the set. still had a great time, water was super super silty tho.
@@purpledrakefishing Thanks. If you have one rod for the day and you plan on switching back and forth between indicator and tightline nymphing, what kind of line do you use?
great to see you got down to the conservancy. I know every spot you fished. Hopefully we can fish it together down there sometime . I can show you all the killer spots and crossing points.
I was curious myself--Looking around the internet, it sounded like it would be likely if you have pants/waders, though the venom amount would be less. The heavier the pant material, the better (e.g., jeans). I think it would be worth it to get a pair of lightweight snake gaiters to wear under your waders for spots like the McCloud (I am going to get a pair myself).
Incredible...! Your footage is so clear and vivid, PD. Such a beautiful river. Bummer on that first Brown....and bummer on the rock unhook. What section of the McCloud were you on?
Thanks Jon--I was around the middle part of the Conservancy section (it is about 2.5 miles of river there). I am still thinking of that last fish lost! It will haunt me all this winter.
Oh man that last one did me in. What a fish, stuff of legends. Dang!
Hey PD - just getting around to seeing this. Do you feel you were at a bit of a disadvantage with the 3wt, given the size of the fish and the flows?

looks like that freeze is upon us
@@BigDoeJ424 I hope so, read the storm coming this weekend will be warm enough to send a lot of debris down, so I hope they're wrong
@@driftstone Im seeing the highs are still below freezing even at 8-10'k on shasta
A little slice of heaven on earth
Very beautiful stretch of river, the fall colors showed up really well in the video, thanks for sharing!
i fished the preserve on wednesday!
How did it go? I have heard the fishing has been slow there this fall, due to increased pressued because Ash Camp is closed.

Absolutely awesome 👏 🤙
When is your new nymphing video coming out
Great video! That river in the deep canyon was perfect for euro nymphing.
I don't like snakes...
Thanks OS!
What fly line are you using here? Is it a coated euro fly line or just nylon mono?
It was a Rio Euro Nymph line.
@@purpledrakefishing Thanks. If you have one rod for the day and you plan on switching back and forth between indicator and tightline nymphing, what kind of line do you use?
@@caseysayre4250 Either line is fine for both--it would depend if you like the euro line better fr tight lining.

You fly line was wrapped around your rod on the big brown you lost 😮
Great video! The last fish reminds me of the time I caught a 23” rainbow with a tenkara rod with 5x, I was surprised it didn’t break off.
I wonder if rattlers can bite thru waders...?

not sure what part of this video of fishing in a beautiful location is political.
