I don't feel like wearing this crochet...
I think yarn is no different than books. It seems to be totally ok to purchase endless numbers of books but not yarn. I have a different perspective and see many people eating out and that is ok but not yarn shopping. I feel lucky when I have something that will bring me joy. I never judge others who get join from different things than my own. For some it is collecting cups and saucers and others it is antiques. So why is the knitting community so judgmental. I would never have thought people in this community are the judgmental type. We typically are a creative group and value interests of others. Painters by a beautiful color paint if they see it. Most crafters have endless materials. What I appreciate about yarn is that it will get repurposed. I have donated yarn when I have no longer a vision for it. I think often beginners do not know much about the types of yarn and then as they get more sophisticated they may move from acrylic to wools. My main message really is, stop being so judgmental and look at your own hobbies and let others enjoy theirs.
Omgosh - I really appreciate your point of view and authenticity so much! Thanks again!
You are so welcome! 😄
I am planning on getting more of the baby blue speckled yarn from red heart super saver because I made my baby nephew blanket with it and he loves his blankie and so I want to stock up on that yarn so that if he needs a new one I have the yarn right at hand or I can make a matching hat or scarf using the same color of yarn for my nephew down the road
I got a Walmart and that's were I get most of my yarns besides the thrift store but if I'm at Walmart grocery shopping with mom I end up looking at the yarn. Right now my mom is in town with my sister in law ànd I told her to get me a loom knitting hook and 2 skains of yarn for a project I'm planning on making. I cut the piece of yarn and gave it to my mom to get the right color red yarn to match my random red ball of yarn I found in a random knitting bag with more random yarns I can use up to make a few doll sizes items for me and my nieces 18 inch dolls
My go to yarn is red heart super saver Its the only yarn I use their is some other yarns I've used before but I manly red heart super saver is the main yarn I use. I have a scarf I'm loom knitting using red heart super saver yarn mixed in with a eyelash yarn. Then I have a few softer yarns I've tried crochet with I've having a hard time using so I'm going to use the yarns in a loom knitting project instead. I want to use all the yarn up I have that I found up in a random yarn bag. I am getting some new yarn for a new blanket project I've been wanting to make since like 2013 so now I'm going to make the blanket I've been dreaming of since I became a hunter Hayes fan and making a Storm warming flag blanket is going to be so much fun and challenging to make but I'm so excited to make this blanket
I don't have a lot of yarn too begin with. I have a few full yarns and a lot of my yarn is just smaller balls of yarn and that I'll be using the left over yarns. I've been getting my yarns from the thrift store and I get a whole lot of yarns for $1 and their yarns I've never seen before like joe ann yarns and some vintage yarns too. So only go to Walmart and get 2 skains of yarns at a time because yarn is so expensive. So thrift store yarn is cool I made blankets for my nieces and nephew for Christmas. So it helps a lot
This is the first video I've seen of yours and I subscribed after about 5 minutes! Thank you for all the thoughtful, balanced information and point of view. I was relating to your experiences a lot and have come to many of the same conclusions. So many channels act like everyone already has tons of disposable income and no time for worrying about being conscious of their consumption habits. Whether the concern in environment, greed, hoarding/OCD, labor practices, personal spending budget, etc., nothing is black and white. Anyway, thank you for this and presumably all your other content :-)
I really appreciate that! It means a lot to me. 🙂
im 19, i just started knitting& bcus yarn is so expenisve i Thought it would be a good idea to buy yp a bunch of 2nd hand yarn from a yarn hoarder who passed away & whose family just wanted to get rid of it.. god i regret it sooo muchhy i haveto move next monrh And the yarn takes up ALL of my space its so embarrassing T_T and at the same time i feel like ice now "Missed Out" On building my own yarn collection With skeins that i actually picked myself to suit *my* tastes .. over the course of like decades .. now im just hoarding someone elses yarn stash and to be brutally honest the lady had horrible taste :"-(
Sure wish i had this tip sooner, lol. I just gifted velvet to a beginner with a note telling the tips i learned from another yt'er. 😢 oh well, mabe i will see the teenager sometime or call my grandaughter to tell her. Not that she would remember to tell her, 🙄. That one grandaughter has a selective memory problem, 👀.
The tip i learned was do not crochet loosely n to go down a hook size but you best be sure not to have to frog. And the fp/bp works well with velvet yarn. Learned that from Farmhouse who never shows up anymore, so i wonder if she quit or changed her name. 🤔
I agree with everything you said. I learned dome of the lessons the hard way. Great advice. Thanks for sharing.
You are a level headed motivational speaker which is why I watch your videos. Happy New Year!
At work a couple of times a co-worker asked me to make some beanies or scarves for her. I told her that I only make for family. I also said that if she would check out the tutorials from UA-cam and practice on how to make it, I can help her out on giving her tips and how to correct her mistakes. She never asked me again.
Excellent conversation. Overconsumption is a big problem in our society across the board. In an ongoing attempt to declutter and simplify my life, I've gotten tough on myself when it comes to buying yarn. I agree it's a mistake to buy random skeins of yarn especially if there's no project in mind. I try to use from my remaining stash and buy only with specific projects in mind or to make the random skeins usable. People need to take responsibility for their own buying habits and posting affiliate links doesn't make it yours. I've also decluttered all random hobbies and have limited myself to knitting and sewing. I've given away all other fiber hobbies and yarn I'll never use. Senior/retirement homes were happy to take all my acrylic baby yarns.
It sounds like you’ve got a great perspective on your purchases/yarn stash! And thanks for the support on the links too! 😊
This video gets me completely! I live in an area where 90% of people are just in jeans or shorts and a tshirt when out and about. Wearing something as "loud" as a crocheted garment makes me feel very self-conscious, especially as I already have a strong sense of not wanting to be perceived.
Meanwhile I'm just looking for these vintage patterns everyone seems to have
I like your hat. Pretty colors. I enjoyed this video. 😊❤
Thank you! 😊
Gonna try this thanks xx
You’re welcome 😊
I absolutely have told myself that I would remember where I was in a pattern and didn't! I've purchased yarn with an intended pattern only to forget what it was by the time that the yarn was delivered. My latest lie was that I have to test patterns! It may start off that way but there is always some kind of obstacles that makes it EXTREMELY difficult or impossible so I just end up stressing out while trying to meet the deadline or not being able to finish in time which gives me unpleasant feelings about the project so then I don't want to finish it at all
I have been knitting and crocheting for 2 years and had one kallax cubicle full of woll/cotton yarn and a big plushie full of chenille. It worked great. Then there was a huge hobbii black friday sale and after being really stressed because of a huge deadline and kind of forbidding myself to crochet/knit at all to not be distracted I kind of spend a lot and got a huge box full of yarn. I think it was the best thing ever, I am able to do a little on train rides and get inspiration from nicer colors and textures and have something to look forward to with my crafting after my deadline is done. I want to get rid of all of my stash by using it up but when I first started, I just got 1 or 2 skeins of whatever looked nice and was kinda cheap. Maybe spending a lot of money was not the best idea for my bank account but I got so much joy from doing small things like hats and such again, it‘s been great .
Ooh yes I love the bucket. You may have already done a video. I will look. I'm new here. I'm Lisa. Love your video
I dont agree that consumtion is necessary. I think that the end goal should be reusing old sweaters, blankets etc.
My gauge is always off no matter if I adjust my tension or switch my hook size. I gave up on crocheting bc I can’t get tension right no matter what I do and tips I follow. I even buy the exact same yarn for the patterns :(
Love the Shawligan! I'm really enjoying your channel content. You're down to earth and authentic . Wishing you great success! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!🎄🎅⛄
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words.
Shannon, the group thing is SO true. I was in a knitting group back in the early 2000s and most of them used very expensive yarn and shopped at this one store. I hardly stepped foot in a Michael's or Joann's back then. Anyway, I stopped knitting for a while and when I picked it up again and got all my yarn out I couldn't believe some of the expensive yarns I had purchased!! Yes, they're very nice but I didn't buy in quantity and I can't afford a large quantity of some of them. I'm gonna try and use them as I can, but wow, evidently I was very influenced by the yarns they were using or I had a lot more money in my wallet then, than I do now!! And that's OK ... I love every yarn I buy ... expensive or not.
I've been thinking about this alot lately 😂 my yarn stash is out of control
Hi Shannon 🤗 hmm 🤔 lots to think about! Thank you! Merry Christmas 🎄 my friend! 🥰🧶🤩
I like your point about bringing skills from other areas of life to yarn stuff. I’ve been wondering - do you think your experience as a stylist laid the groundwork for your UA-cam approach? I keep thinking that you’re so good at chatting to an audience of all kinds of people, which I could see being a skill that would come in handy working with hair clients! 🤓
It’s very possible Helen! I guess when I’m filming, in my mind, i am just talking to one person. You might be on to son there!!!
Super helpful, as always. I think everyone has different strategies about this. For me, ive used openness, intuition and a willingness to magpie ideas to fuel it. On a lark a couple of years ago i bought some crochet thread, and a couple months i acquired a doodle pattern knit deck. I originally wanted to see if i could translate the colorwork patterns into mosaic crochet, but it turns they translate well into filet crochet! So im gonna have a one of a kind table runner!
Yes, I’ve decided to make filet crochet items instead of mosaic as my brain can’t handle that process.
Exactly! I am afraid of an expensive yarn that have been on my mind for years. It is a mohairyarn and I have crocheted in mohair before and it was a mess. But I want to try it again so I ordered an extra skein if I need to frog it and the yarn is hard to untangle. Now I ordered a new pattern and waiting for the parcel to arrive. This will be the 2025 challengeproject! I need something new because I love to make the same pattern over and over again. I need both an effortless crochetproject (in the car, in front of a movie, youtube) and a more challenging project that I have to concentrate on. My crochetfriends are on youtube, have friends that makes stuff but not crochet, so I apreciate this channel so much. THANKYOU!
Thank you too! I appreciate your kindness!
Guess my point was how this relates to your subject matter. Push into new territory n stop looking at Japanese crochet techniques? 👀😆 Is that breaking out of the box?
Everyone has a different box to break out of! 😃
Mmm, i have yarn stash for at least four projects: fancy 18" doll outfit, sweater, color pooling blanket, n another patterned blanket called peppermint. Plus i have two other blanket stash for graphgahns. I need to get on them, lol.
This chat is right on time for me. So comfy making scarves, hats, shawls, blankets-favorite patterns that I have practically memorized. 2025 is going to be the year I make a sweater.🥳 I don’t know why it intimidates me so! Best Holiday Wishes from my house to yours-I look forward to following you on this fun and exciting crafting journey in the New Year.❤️🎄
Merry Christmas and happy new year to you Vicki! I’m excited for you to push yourself a little this year! I think you’ll enjoy it once you get going! It’s so easy to fall into patterns tho, isn’t it!?!?!?!? 🫶🏻
Love the talk! So true😊
Thanks Shannon. Great pep talk.
You’re welcome!
I just bought a Bernat Boho latch hook kit from Amazon and I’m in love with it! I still love my knitting but it’s fun to try something new
I’ve always wanted to try one! When I was a kid (in the 70’s) we had a GIANT latch hook wall hanging of tigers in our living room that my aunt made. Keep me posted on your progress please!
Funny enough, this is exactly the spot I’m in right now with my hand-crafting and weaving projects: I’ve just managed to find my niches where I’m thrilled at the possibilities and have endless ideas… now I’m working on that time carving thing… gosh Dangit, is it ever hard to get out of my routines that don’t make room in my energy and time allowances for my aspirations, and to make new routines and promises to myself that I can actually follow through on so I can reach the levels I KNOW I can reach in my works 😂 sigh-one day at a time. Another great video! ❤
Thank you so much! And I totally agree, I’m like the queen of routines lol! 😂 🤦🏻♀️
@ ahaha the struggle is real 🫠
See over consuming yarn has become a non existent problem for me because I’ve become a bit of a yarn snob and will only buy nice quality 100% natural fibers which I couldn’t afford to spend on constantly even if I wanted to 💀 long story short become a yarn snob and in the long term it may end up actually saving you money
I love that!
I have a big stash but it’s all second hand except for a few Amazon purchases for a specific project. You save so much by thrifting or just sharing yarn supplies
You sure do!
Wow this is so real 😅 I got back into knitting and crochet like a year and a half ago after after many years and omg I feel prey to like all of the tactics the stores use to rope you in aha. I ended up with SO much yarn I didn’t even have plans for and some I found out that I didn’t like. I didn’t realize that there’s super good sales literally all the time too .. I’ve really really tried to calm down on buying yarn this year because I just couldn’t keep it organized and didn’t like so much of it. Ended up donating and giving a lot away, which helped.
Sounds like you and me are two peas in a pod lol! 😃
@@ShannonTalksYarn sounds like it! I’m learning slowly … I think this Black Friday /holiday season I spent maybe $40 on yarn as opposed to like $160ish last year 😅 and I’ve already used a bunch of the stuff I bought this year so I’m feeling proud of my progress :)
Whose husband who doesn’t like the yarn stash put this creator up to this video?
😂
Empty nester? Girl you’re like 30 😱😱
20 years ago lol!
Overconsumption is an issue for me and am on a journey to change my brain patterns towards the "lack" mentality that i grew up with but didn't have a name for or realize it was the root. I've had a few yarn chicken projects from clearance yarn (it was all that was left) currently : Took me 4 attempts to get a sweater that fit (on sleeve island now).
I can 💯 emphasize I hope for all the best for you! ❤️ It’s definitely a struggle for me, but slowly getting better
🇨🇦 I made my sister a summer sweater and a beach bag for her birthday.. 2 months later I found the bag in the thrift store. Never again.
I will say for myself, I've never really had a stash as it tends to overwhelm me just seeing the giant stashes my family members have. I tend to buy as need for my projects. Anything leftover gets used for stash busting projects once I've collected enough. I'm also limited in what kinds of yarn I can use due to overly sensative skin and allergies lol. I AM a bit worried as its the holiday season, and I asked for yarn for christmas lol. I know my family know of my allergies/sensativities, so we shall see what kind of stash I'll have going into the new year lol.
I hope it went well and you got useable yarn or at least yarn you can exchange!
@ShannonTalksYarn I got enough yarn to make a couple of wearables without having to worry about my allergies =D
making my dad a sweater for Christmas in 3 days lets see how this goes
I hope it went well! 😃
I am a hand spinner ❤ I also dye wool . I would recommend you start dying with food coloring first. Also I use a crock pot for dyeing. A good resource is Chem Knits a UA-cam channel. Yes, it is easy to over consume fibers. 😂
