    The one about not needing to learn new techniques or stitches; I had a patient in her 80’s who has crocheted her entire adult life. That said, she ONLY does DC ripple afghans! She has never had any interest in learning any other stitch or technique. She crochets all the time and her afghans are beautiful!

      As a beginner, it's really like getting to explore, explore, then eventually one gets to find out one's interest. But exploration as much as possible is the way to eventually understand one's preference...

    I totally agree with all 10! Yes, the older you get, the less you care about a lot of things! I'm 72 and love my life and my hobbies and don't care what anyone else thinks. Lol. I'm happy and that's really what counts.😊

    I was driving myself crazy to make things to sell and they did not sell. I do love it when I have something made that another would like. Then I’ll give generously. I am totally with you on this list. My husband and I were just talking about getting older and that our "give a F bucket" is getting pretty empty about certain things. Sorry for the language, that's just what we call it. While that bucket gets more depleted it helps our ability to recharge and have energy for the things we care about to increase.
    1) My stash isn't anyone's concern but mine. So I don't really care what they think, including my husband. We both agree it's gotten a bit excessive. However, I worked hard to buy it. I like 95% of what I have. The 5% is silly sale purchases that weren't thought through. Lesson learned.
    2) I decided that I like the learning process and the repetitiveness of certain stitches, both crochet & knitting, and what I need to be happy is time for learning & time for cruise along type crafting. I don't care if people think that's ok or not. In the past, I've received family comments about why I would spend time learning all kinds of new & more challenging things when I could just be making stuff faster. They have no idea what my crafting is about. I can go fast, but I don't care if I do. LOL!
    3) I'm not about the trendy stuff. I like feeling and seeing new stuff, but it doesn't mean I need to make it, or buy it. I have to admit, I'm more likely to make a classic garment because I am putting a lot of time into it. I want it to last. I want it to fit my middle-aged grandma bod. That doesn't mean I never make a fun trendy thing. It's just not something I'm willing to put tons of time or money into. Hmmm, I suppose that's why my stash has everything from budget friendly to not so budget friendly yarns.
    4) When we were younger we all know at least one older person that we thought was kind of cranky or stubborn. Now that I've reached that age myself, I know why. They just are done worrying about what everyone else might think.
    Thanks for the episode and take care. Have a great week!

    My problems were more about other crocheters. I no longer stress about crocheters telling me I’m holding my hook wrong, I’m holding the yarn incorrectly, my hook is the wrong size for my yarn, or I’m mixing different weights or types of yarn.

    • @ShannonTalksYarn
      @ShannonTalksYarn  3 місяці тому +1

    • @jessmakingit
      @jessmakingit 3 місяці тому +2

      Don't worry about them at all. If you are making stitches and building a fabric, it's none of their business how you hold your hook. I've had the same thing with knitters who say that I purl really weird. I know that it's different. The only people I've seen do it the same way are my mom, who I learned from, and my kids, who learned from me. It's quick, it doesn't involve any yarn or needle gymnastics, so purling is just as nice as knit for me. So I stopped caring what others think. It works for me.

    Fully agree with your thoughts about trends. Many got viral because some tiktokers thought those might be cute and it's like a pyramid-scheme where one tiktoker has supported another and we think that "everyone is making it". People get tired of these micro trends that always emerge and always disappear, none deserves our attention. Like fast fashion, you know.

    I’m with you! I’m 60 years old and I’ve stopped giving a crap about a LOT of things! Lol 😆
    But, I’ve never felt silly about wearing my wearables… and I’ve got some pretty silly hats to prove it! I asked my husband once, how he feels about me wearing my hats with ears, or my bright ponchos … he says, “You do You, Baby!”
    I don’t do trends for the sake of doing the latest popular thing. I’ll do it if it really speaks to me, tho! (That Swift dress was definitely not something I was attracted to. ) I’ll probably never do a temperature blanket. And I’m not crazy about the granny stitch cardigans that everyone is doing…. If I’m going to spend the time and money on a cardigan, it’s going to look a lot better than granny stitch! Lol 😆
    I’ve been crocheting over half a century. But, with UA-cam, I’ve learned so many new stitches and techniques! I love learning something new…so I’m always doing something “for the first time”. I’m currently making an intarsia fall themed afghan with pumpkin squares. … never did intarsia before! So much fun to be had! 😊

      I am right with you on this one. Though my style is different than yours, the idea is the same. I have seen some viral things that I liked but only very few. I prefer lacey styles so the viral Irish lace coat looks like something I want to try, but the Swift dress is not my style either. Neither are the halter and bikiny tops. I will probably never make a granny square as I am not fond of those either. I am also glad your husband appreciates your style! It helps to have a supportive partner.😊

    After closing a decade long Etsy shop a few years ago, I’m now back to crocheting for fun! I had to crochet trendy because the masses wanted it. I agree about the stash size as well and learned the hard way when I thought I had to purge to keep yarn under control. I’ll never purge again like that. I keep in clear totes so I can see what I have. But I love to be stocked up in case on a whim I want to make something special.
    I wear mine out too and don’t care either!
    Lastly, no more gifts except to dear friends who appreciate it. It’s so much work to gift it to people who just don’t care. Learned that lesson after a family member ended up re-gifting to me of all people. She totally forgot I made it and gave it to her!

      I've decided that FOMO just leads to buyer's remorse for me most of the time. To get past it, I had to almost completely stop watching videos that are just about yarn shopping. I also found that I almost always reached for yarns I've dyed myself, even though there are others in my stash. That tells me I don't need to be shopping for all the others. I just need to buy bare yarn that I can dye.

    That is so funny that the last thing you mentioned was not caring about so many things after 50. It's a pivotal age and I tired so often worrying about what people thought. Believe me, the list gets longer of the things you stop caring about as you get older. I bought some yarn today and I was asked what I was making and I just said "I'm a collector" with all the confidence of an over 50 yr old. To be honest and not that I have to have a reason, when I see yarn that I might want to try, I attempt to get it on sale. Of course you aren't guaranteed they'll have the colors. So I happen to find what I tried getting on sale weeks back and bought it. Full price. At least I have the yarn I wanted and it will never spoil 😉

I used to think the same thing, sorta emba😮about wearing my stuff, but more times than not, I usually get kind comments. And Kristin Omdahl always said and probably still does (her channel changed a lot but I still love her) but she said “your opinion of me is non of my business” and it’s so true. Enjoy your channel Shannon. Have a great weekend.

    Hi! First video of yours I’ve seen. I experienced the same thing in my 50s. I stopped fretting over so many things, that I can honestly say I don’t care what other people think. And my crafting evolved for different reasons due to various limitations. I went from crochet (which I loved BTW) to machine knitting to hand knitting to quilting. I haven’t machine knit in years, but I still knit some with quilting being my main focus now. FOMO is real, until you find your groove and once that happens it goes away. I don’t worry about the same 10 things as you to this day. I’ll be 60 next year and I expect that won’t change much over the rest of my life. Thank you for sharing this perspective with us all.

    I don't purchase single use patterns. If I see something I did not design, I look at photos and make my version.
    Once you know how to design to fit your body, personality, and mental methods of creation; it's hard to be willing to get in the head of another pattern maker.
    I much more enjoy crochet theory, tips and techniques because they're more useful.
    Example? Crocheting ambidexterity and or with over hand or underhand stitches can change the texture of to the stitch (OH vs UH) and the grain pattern (Left vs Right hook hand)
    Knowing that you can switch between these two techniques opens up so much in both the Tunisian and regular crochet possibilities.

    Yes, 100% yes, the older I get, the longer I sew and crochet, and cross stitch, etc. the less I care what criticisms people have, and what people think of me and my hobbies. Especially, having a youtube channel for a while has helped push me over some insecurities iIhad about publishing my crafts as content. Also, the less I care about how tidy I keep things. I had to care up until a year ago, and then a bedroom was freed up and POOF it became my studio. Prior to that I did my crafts in the living room, and there is nothing more discouraging than having to clean and pack up an entire project each day.

    Shannon you are so interesting and I always love watching your content. I enjoy your thoughtful opinions and general crochet topics. I have way too much yarn and hope I can live long enough to use it all. 😂 but I am an older person and I agree with your take on it all. I think it feels so innocent to have a stash of yarn right? But at the same time , how much can one human use? I equate mine to a person who does woodcrafts. They have a shop or garage and lots of tools and wood everywhere. Nobody would see that as odd? I am the same but without a special building to house it all.
    Anyway, thanks for your very insightful and thoughtful videos. Keep on being you.

    Also since i started crochet i stopped biting my nails. 😊
    So two things i have come to terms with and it took a hot minute because a lot of YT crochet videos are market videos. And i am cool with not turning my hobby into a side hustle. Also i used to worry about always doing "beginner" or "easy" patterns. And i was like you are enjoying it and not stressing out over it so does it matter that it is a beginner pattern? I decided that nope it does not matter.

    I enjoy learning new stitches, but I don’t feel I need to keep up with my friends who make garments or try the newest trendy techniques. I can appreciate their work without feeling like a slacker. I make things for gifts and donation, which gives me the freedom to make what I want, really. I do have a huge yarn stash, which has grown a lot this year. It’s been a rough two years in my family life, so I’ve indulged in retail therapy. But I recognize this as a season, and will slow down eventually. I refuse to feel guilty.

    I love wearing my crochet stuff. My mum in law , thinks granny square items are old fashioned. I don't care. The more they hate these things, the more I go out of my way to wear it

    Hi Shannon. Loving your channel. How many balls of the All Hallows did you need to make that shawl? xx

      @ShannonTalksYarn  Місяць тому +2

      About one and a half! When I bought it, I purchased 2 of the fingering weight and one worsted weight, If I had it to do over again I would have bought 3 fingering (same price) so that I could have made my matching hat from fingering instead of worsted. Live and learn, right?!?!

      @ I didn’t know you could make shawls and hats from fingering weight yarn. I thought it would be too fine!

      @ I’ll be honest, it seems like it takes a bit longer but I love it! I love the drape it has and the feel of the “fabric” created!

    After I did an extensive inventory of my yarn and calculating that I have 54 miles of yarn to work with-I am no longer watching yarn unboxings.

      I fall into that category and I wish that I didn't. I feel like I was in a fog, just masking emotions and determined to have anything that I wanted. I'm done with that now and all the better for it. Now it's just about pairing down that stash.

      @@wildflower-spirit-creations mine has taken over a couple of rooms, so I really do have more than a lifetime's worth and want to have less. I think if you love what you have, that's awesome! My yarn is just pushing out my other artistic pursuits right now and I don't want it to do that.
