What stops me from overthinking is accepting the fact that my budget doesn’t allow me to buy all the yarns I want for all the projects I want to make so I’m using what I have and make repeat patterns in different colors.
I laughed about the magic ring, lol. I do not use them because I find they tend to come undone at some point. I use the plain old chain 4 and slip stitch in the first stitch. Voilà ring and there I go! ☺
Tfs very informative. But its fall and im aiming for fall vibbey colors. So thats what im going for but then smh i see a good looking color i save them for othe projects. But now im looking for woodsy gallish colors ..really i am😅.
I love your idea about watching a UA-cam you can follow then purchase the pattern. Took me awhile to figure that out. But now I know if I can’t follow a certain UA-camr I most likely can’t follow their written pattern
I overthink everything 😂 similar to your magic ring story, my Mum and grandmother tried multiple times to tech me to knit/crochet as a child. Between them they had successfully taught dozens of people but I just could not get it and finally they pronounced me unteachable. Jump forward 40 years and I saw a video on social media of a woman showing how to knit using the words stab it, strangle it, Bury it and my brain clicked. So I bought some cheap yarn and needles and I found I could do basic knitting. From there I decided to try crochet and found that following UA-cam videos works best for me. I think a huge part of my struggling to learn as a child is due to the fact that I hold my yarn differently, the traditional way just doesn't work for me. Thank you for yet another awesome video 😁
Great topic Shannon! I agree 100%. We do get in our own way! I am easily distracted so it’s a daily challenge because I love yarn and crochet/knitting so much it’s always swirling around my brain. Yarn. Colors. Patterns. All of it. And yes. I have many times been influenced by makers/content creators. Also cannot retain verbal instructions as well as visual. I have crocheted since I was a young child and it’s always been this way. But you, and others , do keep me thinking and creating and inspiring me!! If my Mom could have had the ability to find patterns this way, she would have loved it. She and I bonded over our love of all things creative. Thank you Shannon, for another interesting post!! Really enjoy your “talks” !! Your yarns and colors are gorgeous. Btw. 😉
Thanks Jessie! I’m right there with ya lol! I think you made such a great point in your last video about just start recording, don’t wait! I was walking around with 4 videos on my phone I was afraid to upload before I started!
@@ShannonTalksYarn you’re welcome and thank you! 😊 I’m so glad you started UA-cam! I have a private video on UA-cam that was ready to go public a year before I actually started… but I was too afraid to publish it 😁
I have a weird system for deciding what yarns to buy and which projects to work first. I’m a huge overthinker and I don’t mind it as long as I have a guidance system.
I do best with charts and videos. I prefer making shawls and cardigans. I have started a few blankets and I doubt I’ll ever finish them. I love your beanie !!
I finally watched it, and felt like you were talking to me. So many things you said in the beginning are exactly the things I do! The best tip for me was what you said if you're a visual learner decide to make something following a You Tube video. That's how I've learned to make almost every crochet item I've made. I'm presently wanting to take part in a sweater challenge so instead of looking everywhere for a super easy sweater to make, I think I'm going to just search You Tube to find one ... I need to stop OVERTHINKING it, and pick something before the challenge is over. lol
I absolutely have many notions bags too lol. I have one main bag that I tend to favor because its bigger and has all the things, but then I make little satellite bags with just scissors, yarn needle, and stitch markers in them to put in project bags. So helpful!
My spirit says natural fibers. My wallet says acrylic. 😅 I started out doing amigurumi but realized what will I do with them? Nothing. I will make something for someone but for myself it just takes up space. So I switched to wearables. But I live in South Florida so natural fibers are better than acrylic.
I love these so much. Thank you for saying to use the type of pattern (written or video) that is best for each of us. So many insist on written and I can use those but it's a challenge and I don't enjoy it. I enjoy projects with video patterns.
I was struggling to pick a color for a sweater I’m making and had like seven choices in my hobbi cart for a month and had to get my husband to pick it for me, lol
I'm right there with you. I need to prepare. Would love if you could do a vlog about my #1 issue. WIP-itis. I seem to start something and get bored really quickly and start something else.
I love that vest!! Is there a tutorial? I am with you with the magic ring. I couldn't figure it out either and realized the slip knot way to do it. Glad to learn that the way I'm doing it is also correct. Thank you.
Hi Shannon 🤗 I’ve simplified my life over the last year or so…I need to apply your advice not to “overthink” things especially when it comes to amigurumi projects! 😳 Thank you! 🥰🧶🤩
I struggle with knowing which colors i like; I'm easily influenced by others suggestions. And as i drink a lot of coffee, #1 is never a problem for me! 😂
Off topic, but I’m new to your channel. Do you have a pattern for that hat? Every time I’m stuck, I pick up a skein and start making a scarf for Operation Gratitude. It’s a charity benefitting service members. I keep a stash of colors that works for that. And, I found that I love a meditative, slow project. I have a skein of yarn that’s soft, pretty (just a plain cream) and a pleasure in the hand. Doing the crunch stitch just slowed my mind and relieved anxiety.
I spend plenty of time overthinking other things. I have no desire to try to remember where my knit/crochet tools are located. I have them in every bag, in every room, etc. I also have 1-2 projects in my main crafty time areas. They are suited for the amount of brain space I have during that time of day. That equals, less time ruminating about what project to work on. Picking out clothes at night has been revolutionary. I think I'm just too tired to overthink the choice by the end of the day. If I still can't pick a color for clothes, knit or crochet, I narrow it down to 2-3, then have my husband pick. He's not invested in what he picks, other than will I be comfortable using the item, so it's perfect for him to just pick something. My rule is, if I can't get it together enough to pick my own clothes or yarn, and have to ask him, then I have to stick to his choice. That way I encourage myself to make my own choices if I'm not sure I'll be happy enough with his, LOL! Take care & have a great week.
Is overthinking so bad?? I love to overthink when it comes to my hobbies. I love to let the ideeas flow thru my brain! You can never have too many ideas. Searching stores and online for patterns and yarns is fun! I write down a list of ideas, then I organize the ideas and ask myself: What do I need? What can I afford? Bad ideas I can thru out the window, but it was fun to think about it until I am finished with the thought and realize it was not for me. Then I look for another idea. Other areas in life I really try not to overthink because it only stresses me out. Easy to get stuck in life if you think too much. Its of no use. Relax and not be too hard on myself.
Beautiful points! I can relate so much! I've been pondering a project for months and months, sampling yarns, running tests, taking notes - and I still haven't bit the bullet and bought the yarn... yet! 😂 I think there's a difference between planning , analyzing, and dreaming - and "overthinking". The emotions are different. For me, there's a lot of joy in the pondering and planning process. Then, after I've thoroughly vetted the project, I know I've eliminated a lot of potential heartbreak and wasted resources (money or emotional energy) and can enjoy the anticipation of the finished piece. In life, we have few opportunities to make choices at our leisure. Many choices we make are demanded of us in a small window of time. Our creative outlets give our souls what we cannot get from other places - and for some of us, that means the freedom to take our time and think things through thoroughly. 💕
