I have always been drawn to the beautiful feminine even ruffly clothes but I don't feel comfortable in them . I feel comfortable and confident in classic, tailored clothes. I even crease my jeans and wear a blazer with them. I think it's because I was a teen when styles changed from sweaters and skirts to jeans and flannels. When they talk about children of the 60's or 70's they forget about the ones who were both . We went from strict dress codes to Woodstock 😂
@@wildflower-spirit-creations I have old "seventeen" magazines from late 60s on through to the 80s and the style changes surprisingly fast considering how much slower trends could travel! I was kinda surprised but you're totally right haha
I struggle with this as well because my go to clothes has always been plain jeans and a t-shirt, and the items I love and want to crochet are not ones that I would wear or go with my very laid back style. So, I stick to making blankets. lol
I get that! I have a strange (or not strange depending on your pov) but how about making a couple casual wearables out of familiar fibers? Like cotton in denim colors. Theres some really pretty ones out there! There’s also that line of jeans acrylic yarn I think from lionbrand. I feel like a hexagon cardi in denim looking yarn would be amazing! 🤩 But you can also tell me to go take a hike, I won’t be offended! 😂

Hi Shannon! I just love your chats, they are soft and stylish. You are a different kind of crochet channel and very comforting to listen to. I agree. I have made many things but was not comfortable wearing them, so they sat for a bit, then gave them away. I, like one of the comments was born in the 60’s (1962 to be exact) but did my self expression fashion in the 70’s. I was a little of both, wanted girlie but not too girlie. And now as I’ve “grown up” 😉, want comfort without flashy, edgy but not over the top. I like your style and love wearing skirts with tshirts. I’m trying to lean a bit more to the cropped style without being too short. Thank you for your delightful chat. 😊
Thank you for your kind words and support! Sounds like we have similar style! I used to think cropped was awful but it's really grown on me....That being said, not the kind of cropped where my skin is on display lol!
I've made so many things that I don't end up wearing myself because it ended up not working for me. I usually give those to close friends/family or I will put it in the blessing box outside of a local church downtown.
Wow! This made So much sense to me. When I pull out my fall/winter clothes in a few days, I'm going to rewatch this video and purge accordingly. Thank you!
Just me, but I'd absolutely wear either of those shawls with graphic tees. But you do have to feel comfortable in what you're wearing. Just thought I'd put it out there, in case it allows you to consider that option, make them more versatile😊
I personally think Stevie would approve that delicate dark green shawl for sure, can see her wearing a longer version of that on stage and spinning around! 😉
Interesting! My wardrobe confuses me. My brain fights between wearing what makes me happy at the moment, and what society expects me to wear . Autistic here. My happy clothes tend to be costume-y.
Hello! I totally get that....especially when I was younger, my clothing would tend to lean a little costumy. Like, enough where I still ask myself if I look like I'm wearing an outfit or a costume!! Keep at it and wear what's comfy and makes you happy!
I find myself routinely going through a destash of my finished objects because I will buy this fabulous yarn, I will make it into something gorgeous, but then I just won't wear it hardly ever. I can count on one hand the amount of pieces I gravitate towards routinely. I know that I keep a couple of them every time I go through a destash because of the sentimentality behind the yarn, such as a crochet cotton cardigan I made seven years ago that I've only worn a handful of times but I keep it because it was my very first crochet garment. I will say, it is nice looking in my closet and seeing all these beautiful things I have made, it definitely inspires me. So if we're nothing else I keep them because of the inspiration aspect.
I did a colour and style workshop in the 80s. It has been so useful for guiding my wardrobe choices. When crocheting though the creative side goes crazy and there are projects I like but wouldn't wear outside😂 I love making shawls but I'm not feminine or fussy so love to drape them in my bedroom or wear as sarong or scarf. It's all about finding your balance and identifying the elements you like about the item.
I tend not to wear shawls during the day. I use them with the "v" in front and wrapped around my neck as a fill in at the front of winter coats. Maybe the the green one would work for you that way
A. I love your t-shirt B. I have the Luna pattern and seeing yours prompted me to pull it out of my file. So pretty. I can see why you like the Fiber Spider best-it even looks more comfortable and casual.
you describe your style as rock'n'roll and feminine, listing lacey, sheer, or tulle recent purchases, and a preference for dark, long flowy items... all while wearing an (awesome) Fleetwood Mac tee .... I think it seems natural that you need a sprinkling of Stevie Nicks inspiration in your wardrobe.
Hi Shannon. I agree with you. I like both shawls for just the reasons you said. You've helped me decide to get rid of something that I've been hanging onto for no good reason! Have a great day!
Beautiful work. I almost never wearing mine because I don’t like the texture against my skin but I love to crochet and there’s only so many afghans you can make.
Great topic! And, really interesting, I'll definitely be giving my wardrobe a going through for Fall and Winter. For me Spring is like "winter-esque" but lighter versions. And, Summer is always just laid-back easy stuff.
aw man i thought i was the only one struggling with this... i love crocheting with colorful yarns but i usually only wear black or very dark colors. I've been thinking about integrating more color into my wardrobe but i just dont feel that comfortable in that (yet?) But the 3 word method sounds really interesting, might look more into that!
Hi Shannon, My biggest problem is I’m attracted to colors that look awful on me. So, i usually give my sweaters and other wearables away to family or donate them. I enjoy working with beautiful colors and styles even though i can’t wear them🤷🏻♀️
Hi Shannon 😊... I've been watching your videos for the last year or so ( could be longer) this is my first comment.I just had to tell you how much I love your content. It's different, interesting and thought provoking.... You're doing a fabulous job and I'm here for it!! 😁
Thank you for this video! Excellent principles to think on and use to develop a usable but satisfying wardrobe. Really helpful. Made it so easy to discover my style. Thank you! I noticed you used "edgy" a lot when describing your aspirations but was surprised when you didn't choose it as your second word.
This is great advice! Thank you! I was thinking about your video as I walked across campus today, feeling confident in my crochet top over my long dress. I think my three words are very close to yours: comfort, whimsical, and feminine. Fit and match are also important. I’ve made many multicolored tops and sweaters because I want to use up odd balls of yarn only to find that the items don’t fit as well as I’d hoped, or they just don’t match much in my wardrobe, or they stretched too much after the first wear and wash, etc. Since starting to make things for myself (5 years ago), and then trying to shop my stash as much as possible during 2020 and 2021, I’m now trying to be more intentional with what I make, making things that will fit better, match more, and hold up to washing (in a delicates mesh bag).
Omg! I totally needed this video! Definitely going to try out the three word method. I love crocheting but end up struggling a lot wearing my pieces because they usually feel so non-authentic to myself. I definitely lean more towards a classic, structured, feminine, a bit academia inspired looks and a lot of the times, I don't think it matches crochet. My pieces always feel too whimsy and boho, which is gorgeous but simply doesn't work for me. Love the video!
I would have to say at the moment that my three words are: Vintage/Retro - I am rebuilding my wardrobe and focusing on the late 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s. With other pieces that catch my fancy. Quirky - okay I have a 1940s dress pattern and I am making it with a pink/blue pinstripe fabric. But the quirky part is I found this crochet shawl pattern by Cotton and Whiskers that looks like a flamingo. So the body and wing are across my back and one shoulder. And the head is draped over my other shoulder. It is crocheted so it looks like two layers of wings. And the head does have a beak and safety eye. I also have another shawl pattern from the same company that is a peacock. For my third word I am like you and will have to say feminine. While I enjoy my jeans and exercise shorts (I don't know what else to call them. They have the sweat wicking fabric). I prefer dresses and skirts. I didn't know this was a thing but your video is definitely giving me things to think about.

The words that came to mind when you were trying to describe your style were "youthful" "trendy" "modern". The shawl from EFA has a more "mature" feel to it. It's lovely, and elegant, but does seem more suited to someone who leans more toward "classic" style.
@SoulsJourney oh I was thinking, "Shannon, I think when you wear your fancy shawl you feel overdressed. When you feel overdressed it makes you feel less comfortable even if it is made out of the softest yarn in the world."
