Pushing The Roof On At My Place **WORKING ON MY OWN HOUSE** (EPISODE 6)
In this video I'm back at my place doing some more roof tiling. I tile away from the chimney stack and get most of the dormer tiled in too.
Also the dry ridge system is fitted and some more courses of tiles are put around the curve. I'm really pleased with how this is looking. And I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

    No no no no! wtf you put a half round ridge up your roof!!! How ugly, spoils everything, put a secret gutter in!! Spoils the whole roof that for me. I’m a fully qualified roofer, and the rest of it looks ok but unless you live in wales you don’t run a ridge up your roof ! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

      Just the way my roofer joined onto next door. I must admit it is getting lots of negative comments. But most roofs around here have been done in the same way.

We did a nine week pre apprenticeship in the early eighties where we did carpentry and plumbing along with bricklaying. I really enjoyed the concept of lead working, how to stretch it and shrink it. Hey Stuart nice looking Roof. Are the tiles made of concrete? Are you nailing each tile into the battens or do some hook over the corresponding batten. I’ve done 1 ceramic tile roof here in Massachusetts where I live and we fastened it with stainless screws, leaving some play for the material to move.

    • @slbleadworks
      @slbleadworks 4 дні тому

      Yes the tiles are concrete. I’d prefer clay but my budget wouldn’t run to that. Every fifth course is nailed. And the rest are hooked onto the batten . Thanks for watching.

    Lovely job, stuart. i can see why you put ridges up next door, so you can keep your 100mm gauge to the top, i like third round hips better. The only thing i would change is the sweeping hip, i would use 10mm laths to bring the tile of the membrane only concrete tiles will transfer moisture onto the membrane, the old felt was most likely bitumen based so probably works better if you need to nail directly to the board.

    I've replaced countless hip joints like this where the muck fails after a few years and due to the tiles being flat, as you know with your laps on lead, water works it's way sideways as it goes down the roof. A bonding gutter, bonding tray, or even better, running through off of nextdoors tile courses as its the same tile!! I hate to be negative, I've almost deleted this a few times as You’ve been so helpful during my lead journey over the last 3 years , but it's a shoddy way to have joined to next doors. Unless there is some kind of secret gutter underneath it, too?

    • @slbleadworks
      @slbleadworks 6 днів тому

      Hi Roy to be honest I’ve had a few comments about this joint from other subscribers too. I was in the hands of my tiler and this is the way he’s done it. I trust him and I know he does a good job and is very neat and tidy too. We go back a long way. I’ve done his lead work for the last 15 years. But all of these comments have got me thinking maybe the bonding tray would have been a better solution.

    Great vids! I'm not in the biz, but I understand you're supposed to use construction paper behind lead , but you didn't use it on the cheeks? Why is that? Also vapour barrier on top of breather membrane? I didn't know that was a thing? Thanks Mark

    • @slbleadworks
      @slbleadworks 4 дні тому

      Hi Mark. Yes you need to use grade A building paper. I will do before I put the lead on. I’ve Just covered the dormer with the felt breather membrane to protect the ply untill I can lead it. And I called it a vapour barrier. But it’s just another breather membrane as there was so many holes in the first layer.
