In this video I conduct an experiment to see what type of lead weld is the strongest. Is it the lap weld or a butt weld? Lets find out. I hope you enjoy.
Hi Stuart... Although im interested as to the strength of weld types... Im more interested in knowing how your back is ..? Im hoping it's better than before and getting better every day....👍
Hi it’s been improving but I haven’t been working much lately. I’ve worked a few days in a row and I can feel it worse than it’s been for a while. Just one more day and then I can rest it for a couple.
Does acetylene tend to go off? I’ve not used my bottles for about 4 months! I started having a practice again but the weld always seems to be dull like there is something in the lead (rods and new c4 lead sheet shave hooked!) tried adjusting the flame it either ends up too hot or to cool! The weld looks ok but dirty!! 😂
Not to my knowledge. You’ve shaved everything clean. So I’d say try adjusting your pressures to see if you can get a cleaner flame . Thanks for watching.
@@slbleadworks Thanks Stuart maybe time for some better regulators ! Increased them both to 0.75 which seems a bit better!! Did notice the needles sticking a bit though 😂
@@slbleadworks yes getting more confident with it each time! Something I don’t do everyday and it’s been a while since I last did any!! Practice practice practice that’s what it’s all about!! Really appreciate all the videos and comments don’t know how you find the time haha it really does make a big difference with all the cuts and setting out :) Not many people round our way that can weld anymore most so called roofers just do stack bashing or just leave the old stuff on. The old guy that used to do welding for us had retired and moved I was keen to pick it up but without going on a course or having someone there to show you it’s hard so your videos are invaluable to us all 😎
Should have clamped it down on the edge of a workbench so you could get a good bend along the weld and maybe you could count the bends up and down. There is a time and place for each type of weld but mainly most are overlapped. I'm trying to think when I would have used butt welds, aprons, cavity trays or shower trays I would have used butt welds, the back of a dormer it's an overlap to make it easier to zip up the angle
Not as much as I used to be due to a fall from a roof, I had to have my lower spine fused and I have never been the same since, I would knock up the odd lead slate for a builder I know but that's as far as I'd go nowadays as my confidence working at heights is gone. I spend most of my time fishing now but I do enjoy making my own weights lol
Instead of using a scraper to clean up the weld, does a steel or brass wire brush clean up the lead enough aswell? Hope you are doing well and please make sure to read you body limits. Rushing to get work in while having aches doesn't make them go away quicker. Trust me, I tried...
I usually use a shave hook to clean up the welding rods but a wire brush to clean up the area to be welded. Seems to work pretty well like this. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the experiment. It’s good to know that both are just as strong 💪
Yes it does seem that way.
Thanks for watching.
Cheers for the vid mate 👍🏻
Your welcome thanks for watching
Both Just as good. But maybe the lap weld will create a bigger lift if used with slate whereas the but weld would be more even.
Yes 100% agree.
Thanks for watching.
Lead is just the most beautiful material ❤
It really is I love working with it.
Thanks for watching.
nice and strong them. thought the camera was getting the claw , i ducked 😊
I honestly thought I’d get at least one of them apart. I suppose I should be relieved that I couldn’t.

Mustard work
Mustard videos
Keep it up my man🫡
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Can you make some tutorials on lead welding?
I have loads of lead welding vids on my channel if it helps.
Thanks for watching.

I have only ever really done lap welds. It’s the way I was taught so followed suit.
Are you still in the trade now ?.

@@IrishPikeHunter I’m so sorry to hear that.
Hope your retired now ?
@slbleadworks yup I'm retired now, but I do miss the leadwork, I tried yard work for a while, but it was too much of a struggle for me at the end
@@IrishPikeHunter well I hope your enjoying your retirement and getting plenty of fishing in.
