CJAA TDI serpentine belt tensioner replacement - The quickest way
After finding a seized alternator pully causing my squeaking belt, I also found a larger (and trickier) issue. The worn out serpentine belt tensioner. I regretting not doing this last summer when I had the car tore apart but it is what it is.

When will you be shipping these again
Just ordered my flywheel yesterday! Did you pull the subframe or did you do it with the subframe in place?
Subframe stayed in but I can see how dropping it would make life easier. I’m going to throw a video together this weekend but I don’t think the filming turned out as well as I planned.
For the engine mount threads, use Time Serts and their insert tool for the threaded inserts. You can get ones with the same thread pitch as the OEM bolts. The steel inserts are a millimeter or two shorter than the depth of the original threads, but this is not a problem because the threads are now steel and not weaker aluminum.
Do you have instagram or email ??? I have some vw Jetta tdi questions plz !
Hi Josh Are you available for hire to do some work on my 2014 SportWagen TDI
Ive been running t6 15/40 in all my vw tdi and v10. oil changes every 5k never a probem so far. No oil burn either
What bit is needed to remove the 6 CV bolts?
Hey Josh. I am considering the Rawtek/Malone 0.5 kit, but I want to be sure I don't have an EGR coolant leak in the future, as I don't want to physically remove the EGR cooler. I understand the low pressure EGR block off plate and tune disable the EGRs functionality, and that I can splice the coolant lines with a 90 degree fitting to remove coolant from the EGR. What I worry about is the turbo compressor pressure being affected with the low pressure EGR pipe still inserted and the EGR coolant ports being open after the coolant lines are spliced. Is this the case and do they need to be plugged?
Coolant ports being open will be fine as long as you don’t plan on ever re-installing/re-using the egr cooler. And no issues with the low pressure egr pipe being in the turbo but having a block off on the cooler inlet.
The afterburner has a mode called cyclic mode where it starts at high then goes low and if the room temperature is too high it will shut off. You can also change the hysteresis of the thermostat.
when i did timing belt, i just replaced the pulley itself. Removed the pulley from a new tensioner, and swapped it over since i saw how much of a pain the actual tensioner would be. Im hoping that buys it all more time before I have to actually replace the tensioner. i feel like going from underneath with removal of the plastic charge pipe might help. Or remove the egr valve + throttle shut off valve if going from the top (but those aren't fun either with single long bolt that clamps both those to the intake manifold
Hi Josh. I bought a Jetta cjaa used and have recently noticed a diesel leak under around the HPFP. Showing diesel below pump and spreading toward the timing belt cover. It looks as if it has been accumulating for some time. 105,000 mi. Is there a common cause for this leak or should I expect the worst case scenario of failed pump? No running issues or check engine light. Anyone with insight your response would be much appreciated.
I just did this last weekend. I went from underneath if I remember right it was deep socket, 6” extension, wobble, 24” extension. I also had another person up top to pry the old tensioner off the block and replace with a new one. This allowed me to keep pressure on the bolt so I didn’t drop it and was less likely to cross thread.
They definitely didn’t make it easy on these
hello. how did u get black background on edcmasterhp?
My Google chrome background is switched to black, it works well on some sites but others it gets messed up with
At what mileage do you people see bearings failing on Touareg/Q7 platforms? There isn’t a ton of videos on YT and even forums are very quiet, so I figured they pretty much last forever on those cars. I’ve seen some really nice but expensive tooling to remove this in place but at least in your case you have access to some shop tooling. Nice job by the way!
I think I did a rear and a front pretty close together around 250k-280k km, I feel like a lot of these cars might not be owned by DIY-ers and just get taken to a shop. They are a heavy roller bearing though. No doubt they are do-able on car but these were so rusty if I had the tools I still don’t think they’d move
Are those brembo calipers?
Yeah the touaregs had factory brembos, the v10’s having the larger 18z with the v6-v8 having 17z
Josh Im swapping a 2010 engine into a 2013 tdi. Have fuel coming from tank auxiliary pump doesn't sound like its running but have fuel to the hi pressure pump. HPFP is not sending fuel to the rail. Don't know what the issue was with this engine but timing belt in entack.
You can command the aux on with vcds to see if it’s working. What’s the rail pressure while trying to crank?
@JoshsJettas Don't have fuel pressure gauge. I pulled one of injectors out, reconnected it to wiring and fuel line. While cranking the injector does not fire. Also checked glow plugs they do not glow
How do you get the oil drain line off… dont seem to have something thatll fit on that second bolt on the bottom side of the turbo
Torx, shallow 10mm and an extension, 10mm swivel socket. It can be a bit of a pain
Thank you very much for the reply. I did exactly that and finally got it off. Sadly, my issue wasnt fixed after like 18 hours of work i put in(i cleaned my whole turbo not replace it)😢
Hello guys please help, is the 2.0 pan the same as tdi?
Hey would you sell the file?
“A few extra parts in this area” haha I love it! Weight reduced TDI’s FTW! 🤘
Hey, I've got a quick question: would it be at all possible to just use a sazzaw to cut the DFP off and straight pipe a 2.5 pipe where the DFP would have gone? And save a lot of money this way? Or is this not possible? Sorry it this is an ignorant question im just trying to find out everything i can and what is the simplest idea.
You’ll need 2 90’s and a couple 45’s. They aren’t bad but it’s pretty tight to get it lined up in the trans tunnel
Im 9 weeks into owning and driving my 2009 1.9tdi vw jetta. Ive done some work for mot. And in new yr full service and dsg service. And lol that oil has my name on it
smart stuff just what i was looking for. Thank you
I may have a failed pump! Message me back?
Bro you seem lost
Wrong. 20MPa= 200Bar. Leaklage test = 20Bar
Have you seen any issues with the exhaust being too hot for the exchanger?? They are rated for lower temps than the exhaust puts out
For the egr cooler plumbed in the exhaust? They see upwards of 800-900C so I’ve got no worries on this set up. If you mean my mini rad it’s automotive as well, it’s got a rad cap so pressure should release if the fans don’t kick on

Thank you for sharing the video. I’ve learned a lot from it., are you in Ontario? I’m thinking of buying a TDI car recently
Yeah southern Ontario, they definitely have their pros and cons
Where to go for 2014 Q5 tdi, for reasonable price and good fit. I don't need extra power, just free of bs associated with tdi.
That is a nice slide hammer youve got. I found one on ebay that works very well for injectors of various types but cames with specific threaded adapters for the ALH and it was cheap...in case anyone is interested ✌️
The PD’s are kind of a pain as there’s no threads, but there’s awesome kits for cheap for the alh/common rails
@JoshsJettas yeah, great engines too! I was just putting it out there for the cross watchers. I enjoy your videos man 👍
Great video and I am doing a reinstall of my DPF and EGR system and since I have it apart I’d love to take this opportunity to hot tank my intake manifold for a nice bath.. can you please provide a link to the ultrasonic cleaner and the detergent or solution you used ? I know it’s water based but are you using like simple green or purple power..etc? And what concentration? Great system you have .. and question on DPF since I hardly seen any information on reinstalling them since 99% of the information and videos are deleting them, unfortunately I live in an area that has emission’s requirements and I prefer to keep my cjaa all stock but having trouble getting the DPF flange and turbo flange to line up to keep the seal in place and then get the v clamp installed with no help.. I’m doing this alone .. anyway any suggestions or tips on how to get it together I’m not close .. I have the top 13mm bokt in but very loose and the bottom bracket nuts started but very loose there’s if I’m completely remove them I might never get them to align .. and the hanger rubber grommet at the subframe if not bolted yet that’s easy lots of play there.. should I connect down pipe DPF to turbo first and then try to move around the mounting bolts? I’m out of ideas thanks..
I forget if it’s a 15L or 20L vevor and yeah just simple green. As far as getting the v band together I usually thread the bolt majority of the way out and flip it out of its holder. Use one hand and get the v bands together and use the other to squeeze the clamp on to hold it in place. Then flip the bolt down and tighten, it’s not real easy
Josh, your videos have been so helpful in tackling many of the same challenges you've encountered and successfully navigated. I really appreciate your clear videos and the straightforward instructions and explanations you provide! Keep up the fantastic work!
U talk to much instead of doing the job.
Best way to go this is what I did super affordable and easy to execute. Fun fact b5.5 tdi exhaust pipe is the same size that’s what I use only used the BRM Catalyst.
Used the b5.5 to get rid of the other cat/flap?
I have a 2004 1/2 bew which tune would be a good fuel mileage tune..?
Been using shell t6 in my tdis for 19 years...cjaa..alh..brm..cata..cnrb..not an issue..my brm has 516,000kms and still drive it daily
I can’t complain about the results on this car. It’s a sin if your on any of the tdi pages though.
@@JoshsJettas lol yah most people think it has to follow the spec or engines explode...all mine have been deleted so the requirements for low ash no longer are needed...t6 has been very heavily and I've not heard anyone say it's lacking quality and I know more than a few others that use it on their tdis as well
Is it the same on a sports wagon ?
This is a Sportswagen so it’s identical. Jetta/golf will be very similar.
Your EGR recuperator is clearly working, because your outlet exhaust temperature is down around 50C without boiling the coolant. A better fan will cool it further. But you’ll not get much more heat. Your rad would wok better with inlet and outlet at the bottom. Hot water will rise to the top but you’ll get more fin area seeing hot water.
Hey Josh. Great video, thank you. I followed your filter change procedure with VCDs and ran into a bit of a problem. After priming for a while the car wouldn’t start. I opened the filter housing back up and found it had filled the housing. Finally managed to get the car to start if I ran the fuel pumps with VCDs and started the car at the same time. Car starts now without issues. This morning I went to check to see if the in-tank pump was running so I ran the pumps again with the seat off. Pump runs but again, car now needed to have VCDs run the pumps while cranking. The car again starts now without any issues. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
Sorry for the late reply, is there a possibility it’s still working air out of its system? Possibly a leaking filter o-ring?
@@JoshsJettas Thanks for the reply Josh! I had a look the other day and didn't see any leaking from the o-ring for the filter housing lid. I don't think the issue is with still having air trapped in the system. I've been driving the car for about 2 weeks now and no issues. But if I go out and run the VCDs priming procedure it will do it again without opening the lid to the fuel filter. Could the in-tank pump have a built in check valve that's stuck open or something? Thanks again!
Hey Josh, great research/tutorial. Made my research that much shorter. How much diesel is that Vevor consuming on average now? And how much was it before?
Last winter was abnormally warm so it saved a fair bit. Running 24/7 I was filling it every third day, I think with the true thermostat the longest stretch was 2 weeks or so. 10L tank at $1.809/L it added up.
@@JoshsJettas Thanks. I'm heating a small 5x10 insulated trailer. So I hope it will consume much less than that.
This is exactly the video I was looking for, new sub!
How often were you doing oil changes? I had a BRM that I got at 210k and drove it til 390k before the cam went out. Only used 505.01 religiously, but prob did 7-9k between changes. Maybe I should have done them more regularly.
are you talking about kms or miles?
Didn't matter brms had poorly made cams...most just wore out regardless of oil quality or brand.
@@dbeni23 Km, sorry should have specified.
15k km oil changes, it got a couple 20k km changes from mis-communication. The brms I’ve done were around that 350-400k km when they had holes in lifters
I have a problem with my Bentley Continental Gt kessy can’t program my new keys I lost the original
Is shell rotella considered cheap? Where I live it is sold for almost $30 for 1 litre. Compared to Castrol Edge TD which meets the VW 505.01 spec which costs $45 for 5 litres (i use this for my tdi pd 320k kms)
I buy it by the 19L pail for $140-$160, liqui moly 505.01 spec is about $70-$80 for 5L.
Josh, ever had a fuel issue? Swapped a CJAA into a CBEA car and it cranks but won’t fire. Have swapped almost everything between the two motors but just can’t get a pressure reading on the fuel rail in 020. Checked the injectors, non are leaking. No codes except minimum fuel pressure not reached.
Is the fuel system all from a running cjaa or unknown? Assuming low pressure system was original from the running car I’d be looking at the hpfp, rail relief, or injectors bypassing. I haven’t had a fuel issue in person yet.
@ my buddy ended up helping me get it started with starter fluid 😬
@tylertalas2928 just needed to get the air worked out?
@@JoshsJettas I believe so man, because everything else was good. Just wasn’t building pressure. Needed a “boost” for that first start. Thanks for the reply!!
Starter fluid a no no in these engines! He lucked out.
Any difference in the headliner and pillar material? Wondering if the headliners are any better/different.
I don’t believe so, they don’t have the grab handles in the roof, and I believe they were all non-sunroof. They will have 5-10 less years of wear and tear though
My 2012 cjaa burns oil. It has 165000 km. I don’t believe it’s the turbo. Any ideas why it’s hard on oil?
My guess would be turbo or rings
