    Props to you for taking that on! I probably would have bought a complete chassis from the wrecker and swapped engine, transmission, interior etc etc... just to not have to deal with body work. LOL

      I regretted my decision half way through, should’ve just pulled any valuable parts and scrapped the rest. It’s pretty slim pickings for clean mk4 shells in Ontario unless it’s from out of province

      That would have been way more work. Just buy another car and keep one for parts.

      That would be a great business, my golf came from Alberta in 2015 or so and is in 10x better shape

      Damn I wish I was closer to you! You could have my rust free 03 mkiv Jetta sedan sans motor for nothing.

    I found the later mk4s (only had ALH or BEW cars, so ... BEW - 2004 and up) had way more corrosion issues behind the door rub strips, in the rear wheel wells, etc.
    I've got a 2005 wagon that had all the corrosion you have on your sedan. Wagons were German made, and the Sedans we had in North and South America all came from the Puebla plant in Mexico. Same patterns of rust, leads me to believe they changed seam sealer/paint materials, or just "optimized" the amount put on to the point the sealer cracks and dries over the years.
    My 2000 sedan still needs rockers, mostly because the pinch welds were abused by previous owners, and that cracked that stock rubbery undercoating and let the wet and salt sit and creep between the undercoating and the steel.
    So, THANK YOU for the video showing the bulk of the job, Josh.

      @8:40 Those rusty front end-caps on the rockers: I made a tracing of the new part, before I use all mine up. Scan of that is on two US-Letter pages, scanned and turned into PDF files I tossed up on Google Drive, fer free! PM and ask for the link if you're stuck with too much rust to make a pattern off your own.
      I took my tracing off the original "1J0 810 221" part, that's now discontinued. The RHS "222" part is just the mirror image of it... and was already discontinued when I bought the last few left pieces.

      A lot of the rubber plugs were missing on this one, I think a lot of gravel roads slowly sandblasted the dry rubber plugs away leaving nice holes for dirt/salt/sand to sit in. I’ve had alot of them where they rust the fenders out or need little patches at the front of the rocker but this is the first one I’ve done that was this bad.

  • @melbatoast1985

    Doesn't the rust usually start because of the dirt accumulation beside the inner fender?

    • @JoshsJettas
      @JoshsJettas  5 місяців тому

      Dry dirt won’t cause rust, but moisture will. Also salt for the roads eat it up bad and calcium that they spray on gravel roads gets blasted in there bad as well

    Dude thanks for this video. I have a couple rockers sitting in my garage... Been looking for a good video that shows exactly what to expect when your start cutting. Awesome work. Thinking of doing mine with panel adhesive and rivets instead of welding.

      My cousin does auto body, he says everything is panel adhesive now and he hardly welds. Cant be any worse then rusty ones.

    Guys with the MK6 golf, be sure to flush your rockers and fender liner mounts out after each winter. There is very small gap at bottom front of the rocker. Debris and salt water get into the rockers through that gap and it eventually accumulates and rusts the rockers completely. There is a little shelf where debris collects on top center of the wheelwell's arch. Its all accessible once you remove the fender libers on the front wheels.
    You can flush water through that hole and it'll drain at the very end by the rear wheel.

      I’ll have to check that out when switching to summers, I planned on giving it a good wash and under coating

    This is why you gotta oil spray cars in Canada. An old trick I heard about was oil spraying the shit outta your car and hitting a farmers field. I did that when I first got my mk4 and it's rockers, rear quarters, etc are all clean. The front fenders were already bubbling though.

    • @JoshsJettas
      @JoshsJettas  9 місяців тому

      It used to be sprayed annually, the last 5 years or so it kinda got neglected though. It goes downhill quick

    • @JoshsJettas
      @JoshsJettas  7 місяців тому

      They say it works good as a sound deadener, I thinks it’s just an easy way to hold moisture and rot out cars quicker

      @adolg4049 first thing I would isolate is anything aftermarket. After that put an amp meter inline with the battery and see what’s draining by pulling individual fuses

    They know what they are doing when they design cars. They don't want them to last. Especially trucks the entire steel is exposed and finished in 7 years if it wasn't cared for.

    • @JoshsJettas
      @JoshsJettas  4 місяці тому +1

      They have definitely gotten worse, you see 5 year old trucks with bubbling rockers/cab corners. Same thing with the foam in the fenders only on tdi models for “sound deadening”. Every TDI you see has the top of the arch rotted out because of it
