      @@StupidIsTheNorm perhaps now you have the rythm you will be unlikely to want to stop working anytime soon, also doubt anything will ever be stress free anyway - just trade the problems Maybe assigning dates to some of your bucket list items and drip feeding them will give you (and your wife) even more motivation On a similiar note, I recently doubled my rent (although its still less than 25% of our pay), after living in a very cheap place for the last 18 months to get ahead further. Saw that the new place in terms of location for parks would increase the day to day and help. Also went on a trip to where my gf is from in Mexico. Both these are expenses that have set me back 6 months on paper, but also i had acomplished the numbers after being very frugal for +3 years where i can adjust the speed as the trayectory is still in the right direction. --- Just some thoughts. Great video Perry. I've never really thought about what is average before It's about putting yourself out there and getting people to notice you, people who are succesful have always said this before in a slightly different way, "it's not what you know, it's who you know". That's basically the same statement Anna was saying on the interview from other week, you just need to know people with money sat around doing nothing and not working for them , could this be average money?

    What if you have no mortgage on your residential property? My husband and I worked really hard to pay off our mortgage early therefore reducing the amount we paid back overtime. We have no plans to move and want to stay here. In your opinion should we take equality out of the house to invest or should we just save up the money over a couple of years?

    • @StupidIsTheNorm
      @StupidIsTheNorm 5 днів тому

      It’s not back and white because there’s a lot of emotion involved and it depends upon your risk tolerance. It also depends on your age and your goals. You will need £30k to buy an £80k 3 bed terraced house that will rent for £650(ish). How long will it take you to save it? Are you happy with that time frame? Yes? Well do that then. If no, you have the option of taking equity from your house. Here’s what I will do in 5 years; sell my house, repay the mortgage, put £250k in the bank and rent a nice 2 bed flat. No grass to cut, no maintenance, no hassle. I may even use some of the money to invest in stocks and shares ISA’s for my wife and I, and who knows, even buy a couple of properties to increase income.

    You are proud of owning 5 houses and yet have concern that the WEF intends us to own nothing? You're bidding up the price of the other 4 houses and pricing out those unable to pay. So they own nothing and you are happy? You're as bad as the WEF. There are investment instruments and tactics that don't extort others out there. You could be a decent person, just try.

      @SnakePliskin762 you miss the point entirely. I used someone else’s money to own an asset that has risen in value in 2 years from £63k today £90k in 2 years. Amongst the 4 rental properties I own, I’ve made over £100k in capital growth in 3 years

    • @SnakePliskin762

      @@StupidIsTheNorm is that with cgt & the mortgage settlement deducted?

    • @StupidIsTheNorm
      @StupidIsTheNorm 7 днів тому

      @SnakePliskin762 the mortgage gets repaid by inflation. Just as inflation increases the value of the asset, it reduces the value of the loan. If I borrow £50k today, its value in real terms is much less in 25 years time should I choose to sell it. At that stage I would pay 19% cgt. Either way it’s free money.

Nevertheless, I've learnt that when it comes to control our destiny as much as possible the thing that matters to most is the knowledge, practices and choices we make NOW. Another good true video, it's so easy to think it's only £6.99 a month for Netflix and £6.99 Disney, add on Sky, no idea what that costs these days, about £50 and you're up at 64 quid just on those 3, We've just decided to dump NOWTV as we only watch 2 things on it, I'll put it back on later and we'll binge watch in that month. Add in all the other stuff which is only a small amount daily as well, a meal deal each day, what are they, £4 now or a coffee in the morning from Costa? Over a year this small numbers mount up and become significate numbers, Is it that difficult to make a sarnie each day and buy 4 cans of pop for a quid or make a flask for the coffee? Looking at this it's easy to see why some people have no money left or nothing to invest, it's the small nibbles that take it away bit by bit.

    Very true Perry, We waste so much time which could be spent productively, that time spent been productive might not pay off quickly initially , like when you're using that time to learn a new skill, this could be the foundation which may pay off big in the future. Great video! Funny I just found this video, because I'd been thinking about this specific question over the last couple of days. I agree. We're in a modern slavery world. But everything can change the moment we change our mindset. From seeing work as a means to survive to seeing it as means to become wealthy. It's also important to think of money as freedom points in my own view, as opposed to something used just to buy things.

    If you don't have a goal, you are just wandering through life waiting for something to fall on your lap. This includes short term goals, such as daily and weekly, medium term, maybe 5 to 10 years and then long term. All of which can and should change as circumstances dictate. It’s something I’ve considered. My concern is the ton of empty shops on high streets. The ‘to lease’ boards I see all over industrial estates. The amount of takeaway menus I get shoved through my door. The amount of barbers, hairdressers, beauty parlours, all competing with each other. I think if I did buy a commercial property, it would be a place with 5 years left on the lease taken out by a brand I’m confident will last 5 years - providing it’s not a bank 😂

    This is a fantastic video that invites to discussion. I respectfully disagree. To me budgeting is just a first step of the journey to become wealthy. I don't think it's about saving, but a first necessary point of departure to those who may have trouble living within their means. Budgeting is more about control and awareness of money in and out. Also to be considered is the bioproducts it brings, such as a good sense when it comes to spending (considering the ideas of what we truly need versus what we just want when we're about to spend our money). It's also about being able to track those little purchases we tend to forget in a matter of minutes and will make us wonder where most of our money went later on...). It won't make us wealthy or rich, but it's something needed when we decided we want to become better and better financially...

    • @StupidIsTheNorm
      @StupidIsTheNorm Місяць тому

      Understood. I guess we gravitate to what we’re good at. I’m not so good with accounts. Better with generating income. I see too many financial coupon cutting bloggers, who have been doing so for years and haven’t progressed. It’s symptomatic of their mindset. To always save but never invest. Never get better. Always stuck in first gear. Point taken though.

    The point about income vs. discretionary spending is a key point, since that gap has narrowed for many people in the past 4 years. You say that working harder is the only way, but many people already have multiple jobs and can't physically do more hours. So what about working smarter? I'm talking about re-training in a new skill/industry, stuff like that. The stuff you read about entrepreneurial "side hustles" is generally not realistic for most people.

    • @StupidIsTheNorm
      @StupidIsTheNorm Місяць тому

      For sure. My advice, especially to a younger person is learn a high paying skill. Housing costs are a massive drain on income. That’s largely a geographical problem. It’s a problem that’s much easier to fix ‘oop north’.

    • @simong9163
      @simong9163 Місяць тому

      @@StupidIsTheNorm thanks for your reply. I’d be curious to know whether housing is truly a geographical problem, since whilst house prices are lower in the north of England, so are salaries. So what’s important is the ratio of net income to housing costs, and maybe even better is the absolute £ difference between the two, since that’s what can be saved and compounded. And probably rents are more relevant than house prices, since this challenge will affect more lower income households, who are more likely to rent. Have you come across any data or experience on that? (Probably London should be separated from “the south” since it’s so different)

    • @StupidIsTheNorm
      @StupidIsTheNorm Місяць тому

      @simong9163 I have no data. Only experience. Both my children (30 and 35,) have bought their own homes. They make average salaries for up here (both work for the Newcastle Building Society). You can buy a nice 2/3 bedroom terrace house, in a nice area, for £80,000, so a £60k mortgage.

    • @simong9163
      @simong9163 Місяць тому

      @@StupidIsTheNorm Thanks! Assuming a similar house in SE England would be around 400K, that's 5 times cheaper, and I imagine that NE salaries are way more than 20% of SE salaries, especially after tax. Makes sense then that living in the North East can make a huge difference to how much people are able to save.

    • @StupidIsTheNorm
      @StupidIsTheNorm Місяць тому

      @@simong9163 it’s sad that the housing market locks out so many people down South. The reality is it’s a very popular place to live. There’s a lot of work so it attracts a lot of people. Naturally that means the demand for housing is greater.

    You're right, no matter who you are, you have one of those problems. I would put me in the income problem, as the saying goes "too much is never enough" Not that I have too much income, I'd just like a little more so I could take more risky investments. Someone once said to me, a lot of people are just expecting to win the lottery to sort out their futures, they never say "if I win", it's always "when I win". A mate said to me only the other week that he was determined to win the lottery, not sure how he's going to do that but if he does , he can do mine as well.
