Hi Perry, the scene you described took me straight back to the South Wales' council estate where I grew up but left 26 days after I turned 17 in 1981 to join the Army. The saddest thing was that the last time I returned, for my father's funeral 38 years later, the same people were doing exactly the same thing; just older and fatter.
It’s heart breaking Vince. There were so many things these people could be experiencing but instead choose to stay the same
Fancy that, the community doing what the community always did.

It is painful to admit it but I am part of the cult member too. That why I decide to fight for my future and joined the 10% club 😊.

I think when you’re constantly told you’re a scrounger a scurge on society, when it’s near impossible to buy a house when you’re lower class and the benefit system is entraps you by forbidding you to build up any savings, when you don’t have good role models and sometimes multiple generations on benefits. When you have nothing and no hope of ever having anything it’s tough!
Like you, I joined the army at 16 and reshaped my future. It’s opened doors for me that otherwise would have been shut in my face and it also gave me a belief in myself that I can do most things in life. Hence why I’m here with you, trying to make a million against the odds 😂
That’s true Zoe. But, as you and I and others have demonstrated, escape is possible, but it requires you to change and be different - and that’s the hard part. When you leave the cult you leave your friends and family too.
It's nothing to do with role models. Or the lack of. It's about class dynamics and the reproduction of society through habits, routines and rituals.
You are right in your opening sentence, the rhetoric of the scrounger is imprisoning, it's a special sort of stigma designed to make some ppl feel good and to make other feels bad, to pit brother against brother, neighbours against neighbours. ANYONE engaged in it should hold their heads in shame.
@StupidIsTheNorm what are you escaping?? Your class? Your poverty? Your social conditions? Your unity? And does the sort of escape you choose over other types of escape other ppl choose mean something in real terms?
@@DJWESG1 statistics and my own lived experience would tell me role models are important. As a single mother to a plumber, I can tell you, it’s been difficult for my son to break into a trade having never used power tools, never been shown/guided on manual labour, never experienced banter or what it’s like to be involved in male culture.
Many of tomorrows young men are being failed by circumstances not of their doing.

I’ve just chosen a different path to walk along. People who choose a path different to mine shouldn’t judge me for doing so. Neither is either right or wrong. But when someone says it would be nice to be wealthy and isn’t prepared to listen to how they can achieve that, it’s ignorance. Ignorance or indoctrination. Take your pick
No hunger to achieve. It's been beaten out of them over their lifetimes. Really sad.

Very similar to my lived experience as a youth. Comparing it to a cult is spot on. It’s also part of the cult to look down/ridicule people who want to improve or have interests in non-culty things.
Yes that’s true Callum. It also leaves me with a tinge of guilt for how my life is different.
And escaping the cult means you get to go Into a new cult, one level up. The conditions are better, and you get to look down on others a win win really.

I once visited someones house who survived on benefits and had top of the range appliances, smart washing machine ect
How did they pay for it? Weekly payments. Paid in cash into a box hooked up to their TV by the hire purchase company.
When they missed a payment their TV was deactivated by the box until they caught up.
‘Survived’ is the key word in that comment my friend. There has to be more to life than mere survival?
I'll admit, I feel like I am a cult member 😮. Rishi and the local MP came to the local pub for a chat ( not with the locals, selected individuals not sure where my invite was) , then the day after Look North turned up and spoke to me and our lass, I was half pissed and ranted on about a cost of living crisis and the government is taking a minimum 20% of a tenants rent, who is that helping, then about the freezing LHA and personal allowances.
So yes, I am that person that shouts to a mate across the road after been in the pub for a few hours, I mean, would you cross a main road with some of the idiots driving about?
But great video Perry and I don't know what you mean, some people are happy with their life, but not everyone shouting across the road after the pub is in that same mindset 🤣

Can we get a serviced accommodation 6 months update ?
I subsided it to the tune of £500pm January and February. March it paid me £600 I think and it’s been rented for half of April so far so I’ll make a bit this month too.
We’re moving into the summer bookings soon so I’m hoping for better times ahead. I need a good summer to get me through the winter
Interesting. So, some of them off work for the day but not doing anything to build a future? No sarcasm intended, but maybe some of them are classed as too ill to work, and you can be well enough to go to the pub for a few hours but not well enough to hold down a job. Some unemployed and employed are managing on UC. I've been trying to plan a UC budget challenge for myself, and I can see that the amount left over could be seen as insufficient to build a future and so is used for relaxation. But your observations are spot on, I thought you were describing North Road, Durham!
Yes, I’m sure it looked like a number of places.
Living on UC isn’t easy. It’s not meant to be. It’s there to prevent you from starving to death. There is a direct correlation between not working and relative poverty.
A lot of it is the do with IQ too. It’s genetic. Some were dealt a bad hand
