I chose to collect bigger model trains than most sensible people would choose, - hence the channel name!
Large scale model trains, real trains and anything related. Reviews, try-outs, instructionals, observations and in time... building an ambitious Garden Railroad.
Hi, I'm Simon from Weston-super-Mare in South West England. As a small boy I gained great interest in steam railways, real and model alike, and dreamed of one day building an outdoor model railway of my own. My interests soon focused on American steam trains, (in particular the Rio Grande narrow gauge!) From the start of 2020 I have been collecting F Scale (1:20.3 scale) models and have set up a basic temporary track in my current garden. As soon as I find a house with a big enough garden, I will be documenting the process of building a proper model railroad, based on the D&RGW.
Please SUBSCRIBE. There is so much to come!
Plus, I sometimes work as a fireman on the West Somerset Railway!

12: Durango & Silverton Railroad - A MUST ride!!!!
The Grande Tour Episode 12.
Day 7: 15th July 2023
Voted USA Today's No.1 best scenic train ride in the country, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is an incredibly special rail experience. The route being one of only two preserved sections of the old Denver & Rio Grande Western's narrow gauge network (the other being the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), the Durango & Silverton is what was known as "The Silverton" back in Rio Grande days.
This ride (which is best taken by steam power!) carries you from Durango, and into the timeless and stunningly beautiful scenery that is the Animas Canyon, along dare-devil cliffs and following the river all the way to Silverton: a characterful and old style town.

Looks like you had an awesome ride!! I'll have to get out there and do that someday.. 🚂🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃😊👍
Si, me thinks that young lady has caught your eye.
Si, what a treat for us who will probably never get there....
Thank you Simon for finally posting this. My wife and I are very excited, we have reservations to ride very soon. I am well known for strict frugality. However, in this case I splurged for the parlor car. Based on your video we expect to have a spectacular ride!
That was VERY enjoyable I always wanted to take a ride on a train like that but never had the chance. The best I got was at Dollywood that was fun but the smell made my wife's tummy sick. So she didn't enjoy it much... Thank you for sharing this video. Thanks to you I got to see things and places I would of never gotten to see otherwise... Be blessed my young friend in Jesus name... BBE..
Wonderful! Love your channel and I've learned a lot from it. Love 1.20.3 scale but it is getting beyond my financial reach but I still thank you for your efforts and for your wonderful British style and insight. Looking forward to more. Thank you.
My wife and I were riding in the same coach as you that day! I'm wearing a green shirt. Awesome video! I love this railroad.
Been patiently waiting for the video! Well Done, especially splitting the perspective views which I believe adds texture to the content! Looking forward to the Cumbres & Toltec trip! Cheers!
I'm a bit envious, Simon. You rode both trains (D&S and C&T) In 2018 I had to drive all around to both, end to end. I did not have the time or sufficient funds to take just one. So I enjoy the videos you and everyone made of those wonderful train trips. Thanks. In a few more years you will need to plan a trip to central Pennsylvania for a ride on the East Broad Top Narrow Gauge Railroad. I have ridden a short section (4+ miles) that is open now. Presently, they are cleaning up the right-o-ways and laying track for most of the original line. I live about 3 hours from there so I am anxious to get a ride on it. 👍
If you ever do make it out to Colorado again, I strongly recommend coming in the fall, because if you think the Silverton in the summer is pretty you'll have your mind blown during the fall. Love the content!
Wow Simon that wasnt just Awesome that was double awesome. You could reach out and touch the rock face in those cuttings. And the sheer drops down to the river were quite breath taking. The engine was working so hard on the high line. I found I had a huge smile on my face all the way through this amazing video. I knew you would find a caboose, cabeese, cabi before the end😁 Fantastic Simon👍
This is another of my favorite stream rides! Gracias🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yeah another well done video on our historic lines. Look forward to the next one.
Durango & Silverton Railroad is awesome. But, Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is much more authentic and less commercialized. Closer to actually what it was like in it's hay-day. Your friend in narrow gauge in Colorado.
Wish we were there.
What an incredulous journey. Your video has inspired me to head for Durango on our next visit to the US. Thanks so much for posting.
You area a brave man to take that elevator lol. It looked like it was from the 1800s, I can't believe they even still allow people to use it😆
Cup of tea a biscuit and a bit off narrow gauge heaven !! ...superb thanks for the video much appreciated !
Sounds perfect. Thank you!
Nice Hook !!
Haha! Thanks.
Yaaaaaay!!! I’ve been looking forward to this one! I’ll comment again later after I finish watching
Fantastic! Exactly a year ago today that I rode this train. Enjoy! 😁
👍
👍👍
So well done!!! Thanks for all the work you put into to sharing both the history & beauty you're presented in this series.
That means so much, thank you. I've had a lull in motivation since my last one, to be honest. Episode 11 was HUGE. But I'm getting back into it now. I can't believe it was a year ago, I was in America filming all this! Thanks again. Simon
Ah this is fab! Love the old videos and seeing how things used to be. Is it just me, or does that riverboat look really low down in the water? California is certainly more Paris vibe than Florida. And thanks for sharing the pictures as well. I'm guessing you got your love of trains and videoing from your Dad!
Haha! Yes that boat does look a bit overloaded. Ya know, those boats are technically another railway! They run on a track on the riverbed. The points into the dock have always been problematic and the boats often get stuck 😂. Yes, my Dad bought a video camera as soon as he could afford one, and (when I was allowed) I was very creative when I was a kid. Dad had an interest in trains, but he says I took it to a whole new level. 😁
Nice job mate
Cheers Tim!
Left so much out....omega tram near Sawpit, Placerville depot in two sections still in Placerville. Where was Vance Junction ? Didnt even show it. That place is an easy drive to get to.
Well, sorry I didn't meet your expectations. Out of the MANY comments on this video, this is the only one that didn't say anything positive. Even the comment that said they didn't like my appearance said they enjoyed the video. 🤣 I had never driven this route before. I had one day. I had the deadline of getting to Dolores to see the Galloping Goose Historical Society before they closed. I was so knackered when I got to Durango, that by the time I made it out of my hotel room, all restaurants had closed and I had to settle for a McDonalds! On places I could have looked further into, a couple of people have offered "Next time you come, I'll show you...." which is nice. I'm very proud of what I did. It was very special for me, and I hope you see that. Especially as I don't think anyone else has really attempted a video like this before, - and I'm from the UK! Thanks.
And how did I miss this one!!? Awesome short Simon!
Haha! I don't know. Guess which train is mine 😂 Thanks Terry.
@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy what I can guess is that you were likely the youngest there. Sad for the hobby really.
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi Yeah, I was by a few years. By the cost and availability, plus the space required, it's unlikely you'll get many younger than middle-aged. Mostly retirement age.
@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy indeed.
How did I miss this?
Haha!!! I don't know. Or, you haven't missed it, you just took a while 😉👍
@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy ☺️
So cool! Thanks for posting!
Thanks John!
In what movie was John Wayne the man from Utah ?
That was the name of the movie, wasn't it? 😂 I haven't seen it though.
It's called Grand Junction because the Colorado river used to be called the Grand river.
Cool! 👍
I have never heard of “cleaning smoke “! Nice. 😊. Just amazing!!! A grand day out!!!
Yeah I think I made it up, but I thought it was catchy. 😂 But it's what it is: clean smoke is efficient firing. Black smoke is wasted fuel. Fun times 🚂😁👍
Excellent!!!!!
That is wonderful Simon.A huge thanks to Terry for bringing friends together and growing the hobby👍
Thanks David. And thank you Terry! 😁👍
Super! I love the commentary and explanation. I also love the fact that we can use youtube to promote our interests and to meet like minds. It’s remarkable that you and Steve live fairly close to each other, but came to know each other via adding commentary to my videos - first when I lived a third of a world away beside Canada’s Pacific ocean! This video collaboration between you warms my heart.
It's so nice how things work out. Thanks for your involvement Terry! Of course we had you in mind as we were together. 😁
@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy great to be thought of! But I get to meet you both in person in September. I can’t wait!
@@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi That's gonna be great 😁👍
And what a great afternoon it was, loved every moment 😁👍
Good times 🚂😁👍
Thank you for sharing this. Watched every video and this one twice.
This pleases me greatly. Thank you! There's lots more to come!
