Beautiful Scottish WEST HIGHLANDS - Fort William & Mallaig
Scotland Adventure Part 2. The beautifully scenic Scottish West Highlands seen from train and boat! Fort William and Mallaig, with sights Harry Potter fans may recognise with the Glenfinnan Viaduct. We also see the Jacobite steam train. The rain did not dampen our spirits!
My friend Stu and I stay in a prison, (a converted police station), we ride the West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig along possibly the country's most scenic railway: the West Highland Line, we take a boat to Knoydart: the very remote village with NO ROADS and the country's most remote pub, The Old Forge, and we manage to see the Jacobite steam train make it's first run after being banned for a while.
Great fun in beautiful places.
An adventure!!!

Me a "Scottish-Brit Yank" returning multiple times to the UK and having lived there. Always a wee bit stressful as being used to the American way. Every revisit to the UK reminded me of a modified Bette Midler quote: "When its year 2000 in the States, it's 1940 in the UK." Great video! Looking forward to seeing the rest of this adventure. Stu - sensible man to bring snacks. Always bring snacks! Not so sensible when it comes to directions it seems!! 🤣 Euston is a HORRIBLE station! And even worse with the stupid advertising boards. The Scottish accent can be tricky to navigate sometimes. Gosh that's a tight squeeze on that train! Not sure my arse would fit through those corridors! Husband is a tall and erm, wide fella so it would be a tight squeeze for him! Don't think I'd survive in a small space with him and the kids! Some incredible views from that train. Very fun vid, Simon. The sleeping compartment seemed ridiculously tiny. Was that part first class? In the vid you explained how to get space in the club car. What does a person do if they don’t get club car space? Lay in the sleeping bunk all day, since there is no room to sit in that tiny compartment?

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy Місяць тому

      They are very cosy. Our room is second from top I think. Most basic is a seat, pretty much like a normal train and you can have food and drink brought to you. Next is a cabin like ours but no bathroom. then there is our, and top is a room with a double bed, - like Stu experienced the previous time he travelled. The Club Car was very busy in the first hour. Many people did go back to their cabin once they'd eaten or had a drink, giving chance of others to take a turn. We didn't feel bad sitting there all evening as there actually were some empty spaces around about an hour into the journey. But, if you don't go to the Club Car, then you can have food and drink brought to your cabin. Bare in mind, we boarded at 8:30pm so many people will go straight to bed. As I say, there is the option to dine in the lounge before you board. We arrived at Fort William at 10am, so it's not like there's lots of time to kill when you're not sleeping. It was fun! Thanks Karl. 👍

    Awesome video Simon. It was a great relaxing watch over breakfast. Ahhhh Weston-super-Mare. You know I have a soft spot for that place. And you must really like those new transmission line pylons. You made a point of pointing them out when we were in the car with Steve and Alison I believe. Euston Station. Why on earth when they demolished the old for the new in the 1960’s did they not keep the iconic arch??? Silly. At least B saved St. Pancras. I have pics of that station from whenI stood there in 1984. A sleeper! You went to Scotland much fancier than I did. Lol. Steerage coaches with farting commuters for me. The cabin on your train was small but looked comfy enough and well appointed. Ohhhhhh Mackies chocolate! I brought some of that home from Denny for the family. The Honey one would have tickled Stu’s sweet tooth! Sooooo good. What’s wrong with Haggis? I had it when Linsey made it in Denny and loved it! Sooke, did Stu eat the Haggis? I loved that scenery in Scotland you passed through. The club car looked very modern but nice. I stopped the video to look at Carrour on iMaps. Interesting isolated place. You would have later passed through Spean Bridge. Years ago I found a detailed scan online of Spean Bridge’s railway layout to scale back in the 1930’s. Showed exact location of everything, signals and all. I liked the layout and still hope one day to model the location in OO. You were pulled to Fort William by a class 66! 😊 (Or was it just sitting in the station?) The 66 was built right here in my home province of Ontario. I wonder if it says “Made in Canada” anywhere on it. ☺️ I look forward to seeing the rest of your adventures!

    I took a train from London to Scotland back in the late seventies, touring the world courtesy of the US Navy, my accomodations weren't quite as nice as yours.

    If you're ever in Gunnison can you make a video on the old Gunnison train depot at 611 S Main St, Gunnison, CO 81230 It's the old town I grew up in and never got a chance to see it cuz I wasn't into trains at the time

      Ahh I would love to visit Gunnison and the rest along that stretch. I do like in the UK though and there's a lot more America and World to see,... so I don't know when I'll be in the area again but it'll probably be quite a while. Thank you!

    if you ever come back to the states, I HIGHLY recommend going to the Colorado Railroad Museum. they have several D&RG locos, as well as 3 Galloping Geese, and a couple RGS choo choos. also, Hyce could probably tell you all about the choo choo he runs, which is a sister engine to one of the D&S choo choos

      Thank you. Yes, I actually did visit the Colorado Railroad Museum. Hyce was away (he did message me to apologise he missed me) but I was given a full tour by Charlie, who even posted about my visit on the museums Facebook page! Great people, very friendly and welcoming, and a fantastic museum. (There will be a video at some point, but damn everyday life getting in the way!) Cheers! Simon

      Thank you so much. The museum is great, it's a real labour of love by those that keep it. I'm looking forward to their steam engine emerging! I have another 11 - 12 episodes to do from this trip, plus a whole bunch of other videos to do. I'm really struggling to fit in video editing into my hectic life, but they WILL come out at some point. Anyway, thanks again! Simon
