Awesome. I liked the remains of the water tank. Obviously Dirt was well loved. It’s funny how a simple creature can capture the heart, mind, and spirit of a place.
Yeah Cherry Creek was a nice little visit! Yep, Dirt had a big impact. Apparently at first, the workshop guys were annoyed as they'd be there for visitors, ready and proud to show off their work on the locomotives but people would ask "Where's the cat?" 😹. But soon, everyone loved him. Thank you Terry!
Aww, yeah it was so nice on that evening. I only planned to have a quick peek, but hung around for about an hour. Bambi having a wonder shows how quiet it is. Thank you. Trains in the next one! 😁
My wife and I drove those same roads, from Salt Lake City to Ely, just last month. Stopped at the Bonneville rest area, but didn't have a taste. We spent 5. days in town wandering the yard, etc. Also did the "Be the Engineer" experience, driving #105 and # 81. Took a ton of pictures and had lots of fun.
Haha! Oh you missed out on tasting. Best salt around! Brilliant, so nice to spend a bit more time there, and having an engineer experience too. I did so much on my trip, but it was rushed. I could have done with double the time and done nothing more, just had time to take in each town. Thank you.
Yes the hotel looked very tastefully done with all those nice lights in the evening. Not tacky at all😶 Very atmospheric at the old station and museum. RIP Dirt🐱 Another great video Simon👍
Simon , Your East Ely Depot shots were Amazing . The stillness , lighting , music choice , silhouettes , atmosphere . . . Just Magic 👍👍Well Done ! So looking forward to the rest of your journey, Cape Cod Steve
Thank you so much! Yeah it was so nice there at that time, so I hoped to represent that as best I could. Your comment pleases me greatly. Now,... onto the next video. SOOO much to come! Thanks again! Simon
What a ‘grand tour’ in a great country, it’s obvious you’re enjoying every second. Dale and Karyn are characters, a great and generous couple to befriend. Thanks for sharing, I’m hoping there’s more to come?
I had an amazing couple of weeks, and yes Dale and Karyn are lovely people. More to come? Goodness, yes!!! Two videos done from only the first day of 14. There's... like... 20-odd videos to come! 😂 I have my work cut out. Thank you!
I got used to it pretty quickly. Coming back home though, I burst a tyre on my left-hand side by hitting a curb. I forgot there was that much car on that side 😂
Wow! A great representation of one of our favorite places! It was great meeting up with you, and of course, riding the train! Can’t wait to see the rest of your journey!
It was so lovely being there in the evening. So relaxing! Sorry I fumbled your names, but it made me laugh so I left it in 😂 Next up is riding the Nevada Northern, made extra special by you both joining me 😊
Hi Simon, the drive takes you through a somewhat unspectacular landscape. There hasn't been a train on this railway line for a long time. An interesting hotel with a gaming casino, with great facilities. A great picture the cat and the steam locomotive. The deer at the train station is great. Great video, I hope there are more videos to come. Best regards Wolfgang
The first rule of Utah is bring an extra layer. A 40+ degrees difference between high and low temperatures is common. The second rule is carry extra drinking water. When you get out of your car in a remote place, like to look at the frame of an old water tower, stomp around a bit; the rattlers feel the vibrations and hopefully move away from you. I've never been to Ely and it is practically next door by our standards. Hopefully I'll garner some motivation from your videos.
Yep, I was pretty well prepared on my travels. My passenger seat was always loaded with drinks and snacks. I was wary of anything waiting in the grasses. Ely is nice to visit if you can. There's a lot of history there!
Finally!!!! Pleased to know all is A-OK. Navigating for you on the driver's left side of car for you is like navigating for me on the rt. side in the UK. But, no round abouts for you which is fortunate to aid in less problems! Eager to see trains in that part, which I have not visited. I prefer the more civilized - Durango, Silverton, Chama, Antonito. Well, maybe not Antonito! Cheers, Dr. Ric, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA
How much storyboarding did you do beforehand along with all the other research and holiday planning as it must have been a lot to make this so professional looking. Judith Chalmers eat your heart out. I didn’t realise the romans built so many roads in America…
I think "Judith Chalmers eat your heart out" is my favourite compliment now 🤣 Umm, any storyboarding was in my head really. I had my itinerary with brief notes of things I wanted to see. I was pretty sure where each chapter would end and the next begin. Then when I was going somewhere I'd explain that, once there I'd say something and get a veriety of shots/views, usually inspired by just being there. My dashboard GoPro, just slap that on for half a minute or so each time the scenery changed or something interesting came up. Any additional info, I'm adding by commentary at time of editing. Thank you!
@@rivergladesgardenrailroad8834 No problem. As I said, it took me a while to get the spelling. (And I still have to check each time). But yeah, great car for traveling.
Thank you 😉. It wasn't planned, but I thought the shirt suited the surreal landscape of the salt flats! Ely is a really nice visit, I departed from my Rio Grande theme to see it. There aren't direct flights to Salt Lake, sadly. I briefly say in Episode 1 that I go via Chicago (with a 6 hour wait between flights!). My other option on that day was via San Fransisco. Back in 2016 I did a trip with a couple of mates and we finished in Salt Lake, flying home via Dallas.

It's worth doing. Such a lovely railway. When you get the chance, do it!
Thank you.

I was so sad to come home after my two weeks. I had an amazing time.
What a fantastic trip! Your videos are very entertaining. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I'm very glad, thank you very much.
Many more to come from this trip.
Welcome to right hand driving!

Great shots of the rails! Cool deer.
Yeah the deer was a nice surprise. Shows how calm the yard was in the evening.

Hi Wolfgang,
Thank you so much.
Many more videos to come. This is still only the first day of 14.

In 2012 I went to Speed Week at Bonneville, drove my 35 Chevy there (from near San Francisco) an experience I'll never forget!
Oh wow! I bet that was amazing!
@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy definitely!
Now you have some landscape themes from the old track for your railroad.

The lady in the GPS She knows everything.Everyplace .we don't even know her name. Ha ha ha ha . good video have a great time.

what car are you driving
do you know i thought it was a Metsabishi.....spelling ! !!!!

It's a Mitsubishi Outlander. It was the perfect travel partner for my trip, I was very happy with it.
