  • Cooking "on the shovel" of a steam locomotive!
    As engine crew, one of the most asked questions is "Do you cook your breakfast on the shovel?" - Well, often we do. However, this was lunchtime so:
    Barbecue pork steak ciabatta with mushrooms, onions and peppers.
    This was filmed on Saturday 10th 2023 during the West Somerset Railway's 1040s Weekend event. I was Fireman, along with Driver Richard, on the freight train which ran just for show. We had a long stop at Williton station, so we thought this was a perfect opportunity to have an decent lunch.

    ❤. Yummy. I prefer shovel beef. Less dry and goes better with beer. And beer up the but chicken cooks well on a firebox as well. But pork is fine with lots of oil. Not motor oil! Canola is fine. Cinders add texture and keep your teeth clean. 🎊

      Haha! I still haven't tried beer chicken.
      I hadn't thought about the keeping teeth clean part! Brilliant!

    You could do like some of our steam crews do at the Middleton and cook items in the smokebox inside metal biscuit tins.
    I know of traction engine drivers who do a full Sunday roast that way!

      I really fancy trying smokebox roasting and have thought about a roast dinner. The problem is, a usual working day is to a tight schedule and wouldn't allow for playing with the smoke box. Ya never know though, I might get the opportunity one day. Maybe on a gala when we have unusual timetables. 👍

    I was most impressed with your "twin-fork" utensil skills. I recall a partiularly good London Broil steak cooked in a 500 degree F iron skillet. Sear side one briefly, flip and cook to desired doneness. Should take like, 30 seconds in there.

      Ah yes, thanks! The ol' twin fork method works well!
      Yes with steak, the quicker cooked the better so the experts tell!

      I agree. My videos should be counted in thousands, not hundreds. Viewing rates are pretty good (if people see it, they watch it), just UA-cam isn't offering them to enough people 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Throwing in the plastic bag to infuse your food with the aroma of melted plastic is a touch of genius. [/sarcasm]

      We all do this. And as I said, I've been asked to do this for years.
      I can't beat his videos. But who knows, one day there could be a trans-Atlantic cook-off.

      I think every steam crew under the age of 30 have been asked to do this, I know I've done it to a few in Australia

    • @HenrikLaurell
      @HenrikLaurell 11 місяців тому

      that was not the point. Hyce did a couple of videos about it and then others did follow and did the same, that is a rip-off of an idea for a video. Then of course Hyce has no copyright on making food in a firebox.. Yours looks delicious :D

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  11 місяців тому +1

      @@HenrikLaurell Well if you think I got the idea from him, that's completely untrue. As I said, I've wanted to do this (and more from the West Somerset Railway) for years, but I'm only there once or twice a month and working a passenger train, - I rarely get the time. So finally, here is me enjoying my interests, and sharing it for others to enjoy. That's all.
      And thanks. It WAS delicious 😋
