  • During the repairs to the electrical pickup and the window installation on my Accucraft switcher diesel (see previous videos), I decided to take the opportunity to install a driver, or "hostler".
    Making him fit comfortably was tricky. I will be seeing the real "Number 50" diesel at the Colorado Railroad Museum in July 2023, so maybe I can see the cab and check how you actually sit in the thing.
    (Make sure you are subscribed to see my USA Adventures later in the year, dubbed "The Grande Tour"!)
    This model is 1:20.3 scale, known as "F Scale": a more accurate version of G Scale to model 3 foot narrow gauge trains.

    Amazing how one figure can bring the whole thing to life and add character. Barry, no real reason, just looks like a regular bloke doing his job 👍😜

      Yes, I never really bothered before but it makes a difference. I think I was put off by the slightly cartoony looking guys that came with Bachmann locomotives.
      Barry,... hmmmmm. A regular guy indeed. 🤔

    Hello Simon, interesting the installation of the figure in the diesel switcher. I don't have this one (yet), but I would also be interested in the driver's cab from the original. Thanks for showing and good luck on your trip to Colorado. Best regards, Wolfgang

      It looks quite strange with the controls so close to the seat. Hopefully I will see what it is like in the real one.
      Thanks Wolfgang. All the best.

    You were like the Irish doctor in Master and Commander. Thanks for removing the tie. No train engineer in the states would be caught dead wearing the friggin tie.Great video. One Legged Jake?

      Haha!
      Yeah I've never seen ties worn by US crews. Old British railwaymen did tend to wear them, drivers especially. There was a lot of pride in being clean and smart. I couldn't fire with a tie. I wear either a tshirt or an shirt with the top buttons open, - but wearing a tie does stop dust going down your collar so it does help keep you clean 😉

      Haha! Great, I am a fan of John Cleese' humour. He was born in the town where I live, not that he's ever had anything nice to say about it 😂

    A Jeremy Clarkson figure? Now that is fun! He, May and Hammond were the only good version of Top Gear in my opinion. When you mentioned him, all I could think is you need a big green steam locomotive to put him in for that episode where they raced the 3 modes of transportation to the North and he rode as a fireman throwing coal on the Tornado. He was just filthy after that! But that was a fun episode to watch.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  Рік тому

      Yes, there was something about those three guys together. That episode where Jeremy is on the footplate of Tornado is a great one. After that episode aired, people who knew I work on a steam railway said to me "Is that what you do?" and seemed to have a better admiration for it. They thought it was "Just shovelling coal". Although, Jeremy made a joke about the shovel-cooked bacon sandwich and threw it out the side; Firebox cooking actually is great, despite what he said 😂

    Something proprietary English. Or at least British. Or.. as he’s operating #50… so American. So someone with a nickname. Big E was popular for throttle pullers. Or Grant. Called Grunt.
