  • The Grande Tour Episode 4.
    Day 2, Part 2: Monday July 10th 2023
    Having left the Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, I'm on my way to Caboose Village: part of Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort between Sevier and Marysvale in Utah. Quite a drive!
    I see Ward Charlcoal Ovens (built in 1876!) along the way, and have a quick look at my caboose.
    Most of this drive is along Highway 50, which is (the Nevada part at least) now as "America's Loneliest Road".
    Next up: Two night in my Rio Grande caboose at Big Rock Candy Mountain, exploring the Marysvale branch of the Rio Grande!
    This is part of my amazing historic railroad-based trip between Salt Lake City and Denver.

    Enjoyed the ride, once again! My wife and I stayed at a caboose in Strasburg, PA on our honeymoon. It was an enjoyable stay.

      Brilliant! I loved my caboose stay. I wish I had the space to ship one over to the UK.
      Thank you!

    Wow!!!!! What a great living quarters that they made inside that caboose. Great views from your home away from home inside this caboose cabin. Excellent!

      It's pretty smart, isn't it?
      Even though it basically acts as a baking tin, being metal under the hot sun,.... I loved it!

    Excellent as ever. Great tour of the caboose, it was just like being there…which strangely we were a couple of days later! Glad you didn’t leave a mess.

    Brilliant as always!❤. The charcoal kilns are interesting. But.. anyway memorable. 😮. It’s amazing how much longer it takes to drive down two lane than down the interstate. Einstein explained it. Has something to do with the time-space continuum. That and oil tanker trucks. Last time we were on that road we got caught behind an oil rig. They were headed somewhere to dig an oil well. Now it seems that an oil rig is actually three trucks! Different parts of the rig on different trucks. So after trying to get around them, you finally get around all three of them and then it smooth sailing except you have to buy gas and now you’re behind them again. Such are the stresses of the two lane. Now.. when you are going to be late at caboose village all you need to do is call them. Except there is no cell phone service out there. So you drive 100 miles out of your way to a place where they have cellular phone service. 😊. Also did you notice that Utah beer is sorta bad. It’s because it’s made from a mixture of malted barley, hops and cat pee. The pee is required under Utah law. Keeps people from drinking too much. Except they do anyway and then pee even more than regular beer. I digress. Anyway caboose village is great.

      @ToyManTelevision Oh no! You're experience with the oil rig reminds me of the movie Duel! But I'm sure it wasn't quite as bad.
      In the UK, it's commonly joked that caravans (trailer homes) clog up the roads when it's popular holiday (vacation) season. You'll have RVs over there, but it's a bit more popular to have the trailer version over here, and they tend to be fat and slow. And often the camp sites are down narrow country roads, only wide enough for one vehicle at a time!
      Ah yes, Utah and beer. A Strange relationship. Well, as you can see I went for something brewed in Denver so no cat essence this time.
      Ya know, in the industry, if beer is aged we do actually say it can produce "catty" or "cat-pee" characteristic.
      Anyway,... Cabooses are great! 😁👍

    Such a vast and beautiful country, every state uniquely different both scenically and legislatively. Hardly a pedestrian in sight, as is so often the case outside the large cities. There is so much to love about the USA (other than the electrics) and generally the people are so polite, positive and friendly. Would’ve been great if you had taken a Partner to share the experience, could’ve taken turns burning up all those miles! Thanks for posting, really enjoying the journey.

      Thanks so much Tom, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
      The country is so great for exploring, I love traveling there. So cast and varied.
      Years ago I tried being a pedestrian in Georgia and simply couldn't get to where I wanted to go and had to call a taxi! My friend who lives there said if Americans see you walking, they assume you're homeless!

    To bad you could not take the caboose home with you. It would make a nice summer home for you. Really a great idea using the old cabooses for homes.

      I was limited on the plane.
      Thinking about it, I could pay a charge for "overweight baggage", and I don't think they put a limit on that 🤔. $50 or so and maybe I could have brought it home.

    We’ve been past that place a few times. Looks fun. But we’ve never stayed there. Basically we’re usually kitted for off-the-grid camping. No need for hotels or cabooses.

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  3 місяці тому

      Funny, the advise I was given for staying in the caboose was to treat like off-grid camping: take provisions and don't rely on communications.
      I loved my stay there.

    I like the Lionel Trains sign. I have several Lionel Trains metal signs but not that one. The charcoal ovens were neat too. I suppose you found out that 80 is not cold. Lol. We used F in Canada until I was 5, but my parents still always used until they died. Great vid!

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  9 місяців тому +1

      Oh yes, I think that was the temperature of the room, not what the A/C was set to 😂
      I also like a metal sign. I brought a couple back home with me.
      We rarely use F in the UK, unless it's really hot so the weather presenter can say "We're reaching 100 degrees!"
      Thank you. This one ws almost rolled in with the Caboose Village video, but there was just enough to be a video on it's own.
      You've one more to catch up on, then I best start work on Episode 6!
