I lived in Wickes for a couple years in the late 80's. The old Great Northern Railway right of way was my back fence. The Amazon tunnel was the short cut from Wickes to Boulder. The Amazon tunnel is tunnel number 6. The length is 6,145 ft. A dynamite explosion during construction killed 10 men and injured 5. Eleven men died in total constructing the tunnel. It amazes me the dangers that 1800's type people exposed themselves to. The first train went through the tunnel on October 24, 1888. The last train through the tunnel was on January 9, 1972. My last trip through the tunnel was on my way back from getting bailed out of jail in Boulder, MT in 1989. @BearPawMtnMan

At the 7:48-7:53 time mark on the bridge that dog print is gigantic. It looks like a dogman print to me, not a coyote, dog, or wolf. If you are not familiar with dogman look him up on UA-cam. There are tons of videos on dogman in the wilderness.

It could've had the utilities installed after retirement. I one saw a caboose which had electricity connected.

End of the road for this line came in 1980, just a relatively short time ago. Hard to believe famous Class 1 latecomers like this, Western Maryland, many others only operated for 70ish years before total abandonment. MILW ran mixed freights thru these passes right up until the end, pulled by the famous orange / black EMD diesels and helper sets, at which point the tracks were immediately pulled up and many sections of the line began to be modified. Today, all that remains of the Pacific Coast Extension is a smattering of rail trails, virgin abandoned ROW, secondary roadways, some private land, some fenced off municipal land, and a number of impassible sections due to modern developments, bridge removals, etc. In particular many bridges are completely gone - some very long metal, but also many short wooden ones, and even many art deco concrete. Shame this had to happen to such a beautiful and well-engineered route, but that’s the nature of corporate America and economic downturns.

That's near Butte Montana. Drive by it going to Lewiston ID. That would make a great scenic railroad if someone would invest the money into it.

Chicago Milwaukee Saint Paul & Pacific better known as The Milwaukee Road. They had the shortest route and easiest grades from Chicago to the Pacific northwest. They were the last railroad to make it to the Pacific northwest and the first to be abandoned. Milwaukee Road didn't survive their third and final bankruptcy in 1977. That tunnel was electrified with overhead catenary to provide juice to Milwaukee Road Boxcabs, Bipolars, and Little Joes. They moved heavy freight trains from Puget Sound east to Chicago through that tunnel until the early 1970s. Check out Trains magazine for September 1980. " How the Milwaukee packed up and went home from the west ".

On the exit portal, as with the entrance portal, and the whole tunnel, was formed with wood to cast the concrete. The space you are talking about at 17:00 was knocked out to provide space for the formwork. The concrete lining was done because the rock was not good enough to stand by itself. The lining and portals were the last thing to be done to finish the tunnel.

The Milwaukee railroad. Route of the Hawatha from Milwaukee Wisconsin to Tacoma WA. The only transcontinental electric railroad. Such a shame to let it go to history..the penalty for that should be have it rebuilt whether they like it or not.
