Building a Multi-Purpose Woodshed (Prices Included)
Thank you for tuning into Homeschool Homesteaders. Today, my kids and I will build a woodshed for a homeschool project. I want my kids to have a basic construction understanding. I started building early March, and finished late May. This could be used primarily for storing wood. Or it could be used for storing other things like kayaks, lawn equipment. It could be a hunting shack for shooting some deer or turkey. A woodshed should have a lot of purposes and ecstatically pleasing to the eye when it dots your landscape.
The grand total came out to $3,350.00.
However, a lot of materials were free like the retaining wall blocks and pavers. A previous homeowner left them in my yard.

1st Asparagus Harvest of 2024
Переглядів 12Місяць тому
This video is in upper central MN, zones 3 or 4. Asparagus comes out late April to mid-May depending on what winter we had. Winter of 2023/2024 in MN was very warm with very little snow, so spring came a little earlier than usual. I boil my asparagus in salted water. And that is how I have been eating asparagus for the last 20 years. The poached egg is something I started to add recently to my ...
Collecting Birch Sap

This video will show how I collect birch tree sap using a very cheap kit that I purchased from Amazon. This is a very fun spring activity to do here in MN when temperatures hit 45F to 50F. You could always motivate yourself into taping for birch sap by reading about the numerous health benefits of sap on the web. Among many, its rich in minerals such as zinc. And it’s a natural source of electr...

My 15 year old chainsaw gave up on me, and I couldn't cut this log into proper chopping length. So, I decided to chop it. Notice the log is about my height and I am 6 feet tall. For the first 25 chops, the axe just kept bouncing off. But Spoiler Alert, I did manage to chop it. Do not try this at home. Instead, go buy yourself a new chainsaw, or fix your old chainsaw.

    We did something similar. We laid two layers of blocks on an existing slab, ran rebar into the slab, and then filled the blocks with concrete. I wouldn't do it for anything serious, but for that small shed it was okay.

    Mispronunciation of "conduit" made me suspect of the rest of the info... It's overall fairly solid, even if I personally don't like the workmanship. It will work, likely pass inspection, but definitely says "homeowner did this" or "electrician was the cheapest available". Not trying to disparage the work done here, I would just personally put more effort into it. First issue: Don't PUSH wires through a conduit. With a PVC conduit like that, they make fish tape (really just a special plastic twine), attach that to a plastic bag, then start feeding the plastic bag into the conduit. Use a shopvac on the other end to pull the plastic bag with fish tape attached through. Then tie your wires to the the tape and pull back through. Second issue: Needs nail protection plates on the studs over the holes where wires go through. Regardless of local code or use of AFCI breakers, these need to be installed. Otherwise you or someone else could accidentally run a nail or screw into the wiring. Third issue. Unless those walls are going to be closed up, all that wiring is considered exposed and should be in conduit of some kind, or use MC. I will ALWAYS advocate the use of conduit no matter what, ESPECIALLY for walls that will be closed up. If something should ever happen to the wiring, it is significantly easier to pull new wire through the conduit than it is to reopen the walls. I prefer flex metal conduits, but rigid metal conduits work, too. Not a big fan of PVC, but it has its uses. Personal preference. To add to the third issue, if wasps packing mud into outlets is an issue, or pests in general are a concern, they will get into the boxes as well. I would definitely recommend conduit as it would make it harder for pests to enter, and with solid metal or PVC conduits and gaskets behind the wall plates it would make them very difficult or impossible for pests to get in. Footnote: I personally will likely never install lights with integrated LEDs unless a traditional fixture is unavailable or impractical. It is significantly easier to change a bulb than an entire fixture. While swapping a fixture is not a massive undertaking, just an annoyance, anyone can change a bulb. DISCLAIMER: I am NOT an electrician. I am a DIYer who does mountains of research before undertaking projects to ensure that anything I do meets or exceeds code. I usually exceed code. I have passed all inspections on the first try and the inspectors have complimented me on the work and commented on the (good) overkill nature of the workmanship. I don't half ass anything that could endanger me or my family.

    Great content! I just discovered this as I am gearing up to start my Menards Garage build. Why do you choose truss framing vs. handcut rafters? What do you see being the benefits to either method?

    • @homeschoolhomesteaders2842
      @homeschoolhomesteaders2842 10 місяців тому

      My three brothers helped me with trusses. We got the trusses, plywood, facia all up within three hours. So the biggest benefit of trusses vs rafters is the speed that they go up.

    • @homeschoolhomesteaders2842
      @homeschoolhomesteaders2842 10 місяців тому

      But, I do wish I did rafters because maybe down the road, I will install a car lift inside the garage, and higher ceiling space will be appreciated. So if you have time, and city will allow rafters, go for it. Probably cheaper too.
