Let's break down a dialogue (Harding's coffee scene) from Dragon Age The Veilguard to highlight how inconsistent tones and forced exposition missed the mark-and how subtle tweaks could have made it shine.
From humor to natural pacing, this video explores how The Veilguard could have delivered well-made character interactions. Watch as I uncover what believable writing truly looks like and why it matters in RPGs + you get some writing advice if you enjoy writing stories yourself.

In this early review of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, I share my thoughts so far. Life's been hectic, so I’m not done yet with the game, but here’s the gist. Despite mixed reviews, I think the game deserves MUCH more credit. The puzzles are smarter than they seem, and exploration is rewarding. The writing may feel simple at times, but it’s accessible, and the lore connections are intriguing. There...

Final HANDS ON impressions | It FEELS like Dragon Age now | The Veilguard

It was a very rough start for a game. 6 hours in to finally get a connection (considering that I am a lore fan!) is a huge gamble. Starting from Lucanis's mission everything went well. The dialogues became smoother, the characters started to show off their personality (Neve, I'm looking at you, my dear Captian!), and I began to care about the story a bit later (while recruiting Davrin). Also, I...

I'm being honest here. Starting from the end of the prologue the writing is not as great as I expected it to be. Also, Arlathan affects my PC in a weird way. Sometimes the location runs flawlessly, and then even cutscenes and dialogues are stuttery. Everything feels rushed and brief to either present Thedas to the new players or to remind us about the world state. It feels like an infodump and ...

Thank you for the well rounded review 😊 DAtV does feel like an overall decent RPG and I mean it, but it just... doesn't feel like a Dragon Age game. Long comment follows... I've been recently replaying the previous trilogy in anticipation of the new game. The previous games are dark, especially DAO, very dark. The characters have depth and are not afraid to argue with the main character or each other, there're so many hard and conflicting choices to be made with relevant consequences. I still remember how weird I found DAII when I played it for the first time, mostly because of the changes to the visual and playing style, but I got used to it and loved the writing. Same with Inquisition. I can imagine that I might have enjoyed DAtV so much more if played independently to the previous games in the series. I wish they had allowed players to switch on/off the narration explaining just made choices and improved the writing instead of describing things such as the environment - i.e. when entering D'Meta Crossing - that's just compensation for bad writing or directing. Know your audience, trust them, let them feel it for themselves and figure things out. Nobody can ever please everybody, I get it, but DAtV feels like a cartoon version of Dragon Age games and not in a good or intriguing way. This should've been a standalone game set in a different universe. This game made me feel things, sure, but it was a watered down tea rather than the rich brew we've come to expect from Bioware once pioneering the industry.

Lmao wtf was that dialogue with Emmrich? The (stupid lying) wheel says "Please don't worry", then your character proceeds to go all accusatory "ur breaking my heart" and calling him insecure. Wut? Insecure or not, Emmrich is raising a very legit concern that people entering age-gap romances should consider. He's being responsible here checking out whether Rook has actually thought about it, like he said he doesn't want to burden her, him worrying about this is very mature and sweet of him. But then the game acts as if HE should be the one apologizing to her??? Bruh! You're the one who should be saying: "No don't say sorry. I was being a bitch." Like, this all could have been fine if the game actually let you freaking CHOOSE what you say. If you want to RP her being immature here, then fine. If you want to RP her as someone who callously brushes off his concerns and acts as if she's the one wronged here, then fine. But do NOT force this sorta behavior on the player by having a dialogue system that downright lies to you. It's this kinda stuff that can very easily make me absolutely despise my own playable character.

Opinion is an opinion. The game isn't bad as an action slasher, it's fun. However the fan base formed because of complex writing and RPG elements that are now absent. If you enjoyed DAV, that's great. Why do you expect someone to be disappointed, though? 😅 You are from a different niche. That's fine.

The only way to fix this game is to rewrite the whole game, and I mean literally everything. It's like the worst part of Marvel with a Dragon Age skinsuit mixed with bad fanfiction. And that's me being nice after enduring 35 hours of excruciating cringe trying to play the game. And by trying, I do mean trying, because the game refused to let me play and just kept forcing me along a railroad with massive guardrails.

Why is no one talking about the real issue varics death. If he died in the first 30 seconds of the game, why was he narrating the entire game. What his fade spirit was talking to the audiance the whole time and some how still new every detail of what was going on. If varic is truely gone this will be the final da game i play. I know he wasnt in origins but he easily is the face and voice of the franchise.

goose you think the other evanuris die in the fade fithing between them after every dragon/proxy aka arquedemon die in the blights, solas say they die, but in game we see that kill they dragon proxy, dont kill the corespondent evanuris. so they are to be "alive" for a time after each blight. i think. the enginers and arcthets wil be rich with each contract to rebuild ferelden, olrais, antiva, maybe some Qunari ( the true ones not that macho bulshit tal vashoth) enginers may be great. and nevarra can ofert undead for the labors.

I liked the parts where you could see solas's memories in the fade, but I didn't feel anything for the companions, and I tried so hard. But the dialogue was so shallow. I tried to say it had terrible writing and disregarded a lot of lore, and I got reemed by people. It kind of made me hate the fandom. Like you can't say any critique without someone lashing out at you.

At 15:30, it seems your suspicion about there being different writers turned out to be true. The original concept art and story for Dragon Age Veilguard (the game was going to be called Dreadwolf) was leaked and yeah, they changed the story entirely. Why? No idea. In fact, the only thing they used from the original Dreadwolf story was the ending, which now shouldn't come to a surprise as to why the end of the game felt so good, while everything else felt like a chore.

"As a consumer, I was entertained for eighty-three hours. As a thinking person, I was deeply hurt." This perfectly summarizes the game for me, and my experience with it as well. If you shut your brain off and just enjoy the ride, it's fine. If you're looking to engage with your media on a deeper level, it is a disappointment. The bones of the story and the writing were so good, with such promise. A bit more polishing and someone to act as an editor who could tell people "No, this is not good writing. Go back and try again." would have made a world of difference, I think.

I guessed that Zimmer would bring his signature cosmic sound, but I hoped that it would be minimal. for me the soundtrack is an important part of the experience in games and movies as I am an audiophile and this was one of the biggest disappointments... ok now i'm ready to talk about writing somehow))) you said there was much on and offs, what did you liked in the game in terms of writing and story? were tere actually points where you were surprised in a good way? Probably my answer will be repetitive because of the review I made. I enjoyed Grey Warden's quest and the final one, though it was hard to connect because writing in-between them was hardly inspiring. Idk, the whole situation around this game is pretty draining. I'll switch to other RPGs soon. Did you enjoy any quests in particular?

    • @YurateYurate
      @YurateYurate 10 годин тому

@@ImpGoose Sorry, I seem to have missed the review(( thanks for your answer! I enjoyed Warden's quest too, as well as Bellara's. I have romanced her and her story with her brother touched me a little, but the appearance of Anaris was a terrible disappointment. Also I liked Harding's quest a little but only for lore reasons. Through the main plot I liked “Blood of Arlathan” but only for Solas' interaction with Elgar'nan. Solas was generally the bright spot in this mediocre story, and I don't say that as a Solasmancer. I really enjoyed every conversation with him A LOT. it definitely could have been done a lot better, but it could also have been a lot worse. this personality of his contrasts well with what we've seen before, and his completely fucked-up relationship with mythal makes things much more interesting and deeper. everything about im is done so better than everything else that it's confusing. And Act 3 entirely was surprisingly good for this game, they clearly had a strong vision of what was going on from early in development, perhaps even from past iterations. it was intense, interesting, and incredibly emotional. I cried and gasped and paused a lot, and the ending made me forget for a while how bad everything else was. but then, out of curiosity, I looked at the other endings and was reminded))) oh what an exhausting game this is right to the point! I'm still trying to process my emotions and structure my thoughts, but there is too much ambiguous shit, very high highs and incredibly low lows. I don't think I can switch to other games anytime soon, I need to get my head and heart in order. maybe other DA games, idk. I'm still hyperfixated but now I'm also sad about it. I am "the Veil must be torn down and world must be rebuilded"-truther, so I don't have my conclusion. Yes, they are happy, but I'm not and it seems I am in solavellan hell for eternity now... it was long sorry I'm a mess rn

I think Harding's hesitation makes sense because its after she has tried it. She was excited about the smell of the coffee rather than the drink. That being said it's painfully clearly an attempt at the millenial "Adorkable" sitcom dialogue Lucanis' personality is very lacking in this, though. If they wanted something deadpan, the writing and delivery are both not hitting home. The dialogue achieves seeks to achieve nothing but runtime. Edit: I spoke too soon. I see what they are going for. My cold heart just didnt pick up on it

This is a great video. I don't have much to say without making a super massive post. But two things that stood out to me that I greatly disliked are the level design of the cities and the lack of bite the series used to have. The cities feel more like puzzles than actual cities and there really is no rhyme or reason to them. I like it when cities are designed in a logical way that also allows for combat arenas. Instead, you have a main thoroughfare that suddenly stops and you have to climb a ladder. Wait, scratch that, you have to climb up some scaffolding then jump five feet to kick down a ladder. What is this? It's padding that adds nothing to the experience of making that shortcut. All this works in the fade and, to a lesser extent, Arlathan Forest. But for the cities? Bleh. It does the art great disservice because, like you mentioned, environmental art is absolutely gorgeous. The second is the setting got sanded down. It used to be messy. Politics were at the core of them and it was the better for it. But now it's just good guys are good, everyone gets along, and the bad guys have no depth to them. It feels like HR-In-The-Room kind of writing and it's just not for me. I know people love cozy writing and a non-insignificant amount of people praised how light it was in this game. But for me, I miss the moral ambiguity. The crows used to me more insidious and mercenary, there was discrimination against non-humans, Tevinter didn't feel oppressive and the only ones using blood magic were a "cult" instead of the norm. I missed all of that and despite the world on the brink of annihilation all these kingdoms looked inward and used the situation to their advantage to gain political power by withholding support from you unless you help them. Anyway, that's my massive post. It's not super massive, but it's big enough. I really enjoyed the video and thanks for making it!

Actually the design isn't good either. Let's take Nevarra for example. Yes, here we have the Grand Necropolis which is full of skulls, skeletons and the Pentaghast coat of arms. All right, it works. But then we go to a manor owned by a local noble family. And it has exactly the same design as the Necropolis - skulls, skeletons and the Pentaghast coat of arms. But why?! Is Nevarra just about skulls and death now? How do these people suppose to live there? Even their bed has a giant skull. Imagine if the Cousland manor in Origins had mabaris everywhere. Why a Nevarran companion from the previous game was a better representation for her country with her hairstyle, accent and stories than the actual country itself in this game? None of the Nevarrans in Veilguard have Cassandra's accent or crown braid, I purposely examined every NPC in the Necropolis. Not to mention that Emmrich's parents' tombs have the Pentaghast coat of arms but they were commoners as he confesses in a banter with Harding. It is evident that the designers didn't have any idea about the lore... It's just so lazy and lame.

So I’d like to hear more of your take on why you think the writing wasn’t rushed. I know you give the theory that it’s by design to prep fans for the show & perhaps that has something to do with some of the tone, but the general quality throughout like you said, doesn’t feel like a final draft. Moreover, when people say the game had 10 years of development, they’re willingly ignoring what we know about the development timeline whiplashing from single player to multiplayer and back to single player finally. Between that and the disruptions of the pandemic & as well as the writers’ strike, I don’t see any way for the writing of this game to not have been rushed & I think it’s a miracle we got gems like the finale at all. This context by no means somehow makes the game writing suddenly good, but I don’t think it’s fair for people to be acting all surprised & offended at the team who fought tooth & nail to bring us anything remotely resembling dragon age games of past with the hand they were dealt instead of another awful soulless micro transaction plagued multiplayer disaster. Do I wish the writing had been more inspired & well crafted? Obviously. Is it preferable to the alternative EA would have had this game become without the work of the writers? Certainly.

The caretaker manipulating all of them into being overly nice immediately would have been immensely cool.

I just found your channel, watched your rewrite of the Lucanis/Harding coffee scene, and finished the section here on immersion. I'm going to have to come back to watch the rest of this video later, but it seems like you and I have nearly identical opinions. I romanced Solas multiple times in different Inquisition playthroughs, so it's no surprise I loved all the Solas and Solavellan scenes. But that almost makes me even sadder about the rest of the writing. As a writer myself, if I zoom out and look at the outline of major plotpoints in Veilguard, this game should have been an 11 out of 10 for me. I love the concept and all the major twists and turns, but even the really good scenes didn't hit as hard as they should have, because the writing for the rest of the scenes didn't pull its weight to build up and support those more important scenes. I should have been ugly crying when Mythal released Solas from her service when I got the good ending, but as beautiful as that scene was, it couldn't quite get me crying on its own. When I finished playing the game, I had to take some time to sort of mourn the game we /almost/ had, if only the writing and pacing had been better. I also wanted to add to your point about Taash's arc about their gender identity thematically contradicting the forced choice regarding their cultural identity. There was another inconsistency with the Dragon King plotline. Maybe I'm missing something, but I found it really strange the game gave Taash of all people the "girl power" moment when it implied they were a queen when they killed the Dragon King. Why are we giving the girl power moment to a character whose arc is largely about them not being a woman? It definitely broke immersion for me.

I really didn’t like how they handled the returning characters-Morrigan, Dorian, and Isabela felt completely off, like shadows of who they used to be. Plus, my HoF, who romanced Morrigan in Origins and had a child with her-a dynamic that played a big role in Inquisition-was completely overlooked. The HoF’s search for a cure for the Calling was another fascinating plot point that added so much complexity, but none of it was acknowledged here. On top of that, the Inquisitor was barely involved in Veilguard. This really should have been a direct sequel to Inquisition. Instead, I’m just going to pretend Veilguard is one of Varric’s cheesy novels.
