I think the reason there are no spiders is much simpler than what you're suggesting. Just like dark spawn now becoming undead and popping up out of the ground.
Giant spiders have been such an overused trope in fantasy games (Skyrim, Dragon Age, The Witcher 3, LOTR games, Jedi: Fallen Order, Dragons Dogma, etc). It’s the laziest enemy variant for a developer to include in a game, so I’m honestly glad they’re not in DAV.
I blame Ghilan’nain. She needed spiders for her constructs, to give the people of Thedas something new to fear. 😱 All joking aside, I like the amount of thought you put into your theory. If BioWare has no narrative reason why, they should use yours!
I love this theory !!!! However, my biggest fear is the spiders were not included in the game because they didn't want to bother with arachnaphobes. Of course I'm fine with that, but I'm interested in lore and story, so even if it's just a forced explanation, it's better than nothing. (for example, spiders are not native to that part and have always been imported or they extinct due to the greedy Tevinter mages) Unfortunately, the lack of save import choices doesn't help me trust the devs more to be honest. I know it's boring I'm still whining about this.... but of course I have some hope that I'm wrong and despite all that, the lore is complex and there are just a few retcons or holes in it. But for now I really don't trust them X')
I was not prepared to think about spider/mushroom/lyrium economics today as a way to justify a game system decision...but I'm so here for it. Economic systems with magic are wild enough already, so why not??
