That dusty smell is mildew. I hate to tell you pretty sure I had to throw out some silk cause I couldn’t get that smell out. After I knitted a whole shawl and then discovered after wearing it a couple times I couldn’t even wear it because of the smell is so bad.

AAHH it's the silk that has that smell! I have a linen/silk blend that I picked up on sale and I was wondering if it was on sale because it's been in a warehouse for a long time...or if it was the dye that smells? My other linen doesn't smell so I could rule that out. Thanks for helping me solve the mystery! Another comment says that it comes out with washing so that's nice!

The “hold it with a strand of mohair” era made knitting with the same yarn (and look) as the pattern waaaaay out of reach for budget watchers!

I know exactly the smell of silk you are talking about! I think it’s kind of mushroomy. Weirdly, I love it! Sometimes I get a whiff of it in clothing stores and I’ll immediately try and find the silk item nearby. My knitting friend once joked that it’s the smell of money lol. Next time for the sleeves w/provisional cast-on, try knitting about 2-4 rows of stockinette & insert a lifeline on the first row of stockinette, that way you can then pick up on the correct row. I've done that for a wall-hanging cable project that need a provisional cast on (in this case, I needed the extra yarn so that I can insert a piece of macrame rather than pick up stitches)

The orangey mohair sounds like it will really make the red brighten up. That will be a fun swatch to knit up.

I made the Miles shirt jacket with 6 plates of Plotulopi yarn a few years back. That is holding the yarn double and still had a little bit left over. There is a lot of yarn in those plates. It is one of my most worn piece. The yarn is so amazing. :)

For doing a provisional cast on for your two-at-a-time sleeves, I’m curious if you find that looks better than just picking up stitches for the cuffs later? I’ve found provisional cast ons to be SO fussy. I’ve only done this on the back-shoulder seam of a tank top, but I find that just picking up stitches looks just fine, but is so much less fussy

I got a woven scarf from my sister and it stunk! I washed it because it was pretty and I liked it. The smell never went away and I had to donate it. Maybe you should wash your sweater and see if it goes away before you get too far. 🤞

I recently knitted a cowl from Artyarns Silky Twist and yuk, what a smell! What did it remind me of? The LAST time I knit with an Artyarns silk-based yarn, which was years ago. I have not noticed this smell with the silk of other manufacturers, but then I don’t have broad experience with silk yarns. Anyway, since I knew I didn’t want this smell near my face, I stuck the cowl in a bag with a couple of lavender sachets and set it aside for two days. Last night I took it out and wore it: All the bad smell gone! And so soft and silky-a tactile delight.

Dont be like me and get too forceful with the sweater shaver. I pushed the shaver way too hard on a soft surface and shaved right through some of the sweater stitches 😬. Luckily it was a Costco-bought sweater so i wasnt too sad that i wrecked it. Anyhow, Happy New Year!

On silk smell, reddit says: Apparently, the glue that silkworms use in their cocoons, called sericin, can linger in less processed kinds of silk and is essentially rotting protein. The silkier, smoother kinds of silk are processed enough this isn’t an issue usually.

Osi's sweater is adorable :) I'm currently knitting the Paul Sweater (v-neck version) and be warned... the finished look is fantastic, but the ribbing is NO JOKE. It is knit at a tight gauge and seems to go on forever. I can admit I got stuck for a few weeks on body ribbing island as I emotionally prepared for the 350+ stitch tubular bind off ;P

It's a great idea to do your sleeves first. I typically do my sleeves after I join in the round on sweaters because then I'm just doing body. I don't get stuck on sleeve island. It's just how I started doing it. I heard too many Sleeve Island woes. Your dad is a lucky guy to get birthday sweaters from your This is his second one since you started knitting. If I recall correctly, the last one was to make a smaller size of a sweater he owned.

So happy to see you both, the dog sweater is adorable. I knit the Valentine Heart Cable sweater for several friends dogs last year, very fun and fast and used up scraps! My dogs are woolly naturally and really don't need clothes in our climate🤥

Literally every Saturday morning, I forget that your podcast comes out, I still down (after making waffles for the fam, then cleaning up) and get so excited to catch up on your knits when I see your podcast has posted! I don’t know how I always forge that you upload every Saturday since I’ve been regularly watching your podcast since episode two ☺️ but I do, and I’m just as excited every week. Thank you for all the work that you do to make your podcast so enjoyable.

If you have ever sewn with raw silk fabric, it does have a very earthy somewhat musty odor that isn't wonderful but I wouldn't go so far to say it was offensive. It is just something to do with the silk fiber. Because most of the silk fiber used in yarn is close to raw state then that unique odor will be noticeable. I know after it is blocked it is much less noticeable. Your sweaters are gorgeous. I just started a sweater called Brookings by Marie Greene. It has some cabling in it but not too much. I bought fabric with a silk content and it had a horrible odor and they said it should reduce if left to air out in a sunny spot (i think wrong side up). It did help some since it wasn't something I could wash. The scent completely disappeared by the time I sewed it, I believe.

I have loathed the smell of silk for so long. I used to think it was my mom’s perfume and then one day realized that it’s silk itself! Especially knitted silk (vs like a flat silk fabric - I’m guessing bc that is much thinner/less to smell).
