I use a separate set of circular needles for cables. So easy. I load the cable onto the small set of circular needles and then knit the cable off of it as needed in the pattern. ❤
Something I do with projects that I just want to be done is bring them to a place where I'll have knit time but don't bring anything else! Sometimes I have knit time at work, so I've been bringing a sweater that i just need to get that second sleeve done, so when I have that knit time I don't have a choice to work on something else. Sometimes I'll also go to a cafe or something and bring it so it's either that project or nothing (but the nice cafe vibes still makes it feel enjoyable)
What a great episode! I love the spooky vibe...my fave time of year where I pull out my ghostie needle holders and creepy project bags! As always, your knitting is stunning - I love how even your stitches always are! Can't wait to see your Sand cardigan all done...because with that particular one, I'm totally living vicariously through you! I live in Texas so I would not be able to wear that length of cardigan very much, so I stick to smaller things. You always provide such great energy and love of knitting/crochet and I look forward to Saturday mornings! Hugs from Texas!
Thank you so much!! Love that you’re getting in to the spooky season too! It’s also so encouraging to hear about your anticipation for the Sand cardigan!! I appreciate that!
I’m so excited for spooky season! We have a breast cancer research fundraiser going on at work next week. We can wear jeans with donations so I’m trying to crochet at least 4 hats and a lap blanket before the end of the week. I’ve got 2 hats done and you helped me get through a huge portion of the blanket. Yes! Crochet for me is also much faster than knitting. Love them both and they each have there place and time in my hobby time.
I use the mustache cable needle and just stick it into the fabric after I use it and it’s right there for the next one. I’ll try the hook again, but couldn’t get the hang of it before. For sleeves I like the chiagoo shortie blue set. I don’t like magic loop either. I also use the Lykke wood needles for sleeves for simpler sleeves
I never ever use wood or bamboo needles. For some of the reasons you mentioned but also because I knit slightly tight and love the slippery metal. I even use metal double pointed needles. Never had issues with stitches slipping off. I also like hearing the methodical clicking of my needles as I knit 😊
This is so interesting bc I almost exclusively knit on bamboo... I wonder if it is a personal preference thing. I find metal makes a weird swishing noise that sorta gives me a sensory "issue" (though could be my metal needles are box-store, cheaper ones)🤔🤷🏼♀️.
That Beatrix cardigan is STUNNI G!!! And that color, WOW. On your Cordelia skirt... Another option for waistband - pick up and knit full length you need, fold over. Then instead of sewing it on, pick up 5both"legs" of your picked up stitch or the stitch right above it. And simultaneously knit and bind off. More structural integrity, you still have the stretch, and it's a super-clean finish. As you knit and bind off, enclosed your elastic at same time. Just another option!
You are going to love working with the ito. The silk mohair is some of the best I have used. I love the 60/40 blend. It is my favorite base in mohair and difficult to find. Mad Tosh/ formerly Shibui is another 60/40 base. Enjoy!!!!
I use "Finish It Friday" to help finish projects. I only work on WIPs, specifically the ones that are hanging around too long, on Fridays. I also try to clear all my emails, do all the little tasks that will complete other things in my life. It's sort of like, if I can finish or almost finish something on Friday, then I don't have stuff hanging over me as an obligation on the weekend. As a bi-product it has also made Mondays a lot more enjoyable. I look forward to the clean desk, fresh inbox, and some work has gone into some of those lingering projects. Additionally, if something has been in limbo too long and I avoid it for more than 6 Fridays, I consider ditching it. Obviously, there's something going on, if I avoid it for that many finishing opportunities, so I need to find out what my problem is with the project. If I can't pinpoint and tackle what's causing the procrastination, then I usually end up frogging the project, or donating it. Once in a while, I'll swap a project with my Mom. We have similar tension and totally opposite things that we like to do. For example, She likes to knit with large needles and I like small. She likes needle gymnastics and I love a good stockinette in the round, whereas she thinks that's boring. Have a great week & take care.
Oh!! I love combination sweaters! I’ve made two and have a third in the works. Anxious to see you make your knit/crochet top. I may have to make that one too!
I think you could focus on the November deadline knitting & put your long cardigan in mini-hibernation until after those are finished. You'll get back to it & then you can really focus on those 3 projects! Love seeing your progress.
I’m currently working on my first knitted garment. I’ve been knitting and crocheting for years but this is my first sweater. The novice sweater by petiteknit. Watching your podcast is really inspiring. I have plans for a lot more to cast on once my yarn I ordered gets here.
I’m so happy you’re giving garment knitting a try!! I always remind myself that bigger projects aren’t necessarily more complicated, just more stitches! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!
Yes !!! I don't really care for "spooky season", (we don't really do a lot here in France) but this version of your intro is my favorite ! I'm also in the mood for less WIP's. I'm actually finishing one while listening to your podcast, to get it ready to get blocked.
@@akaNoraKnits yes it makes it more visually interesting but it’s light enough you have the flexibility to wear it like a regular white/black staple skirt!!! Honestly love how it looks
Dear Nora!! Am I inspired to knit a skirt now? Ohhhh yeah!!! I have no idea how I would fit this onto my needles, as I feel I'm at an all-time high with full needles. Hello fall and hello making everything!
Beatrix is looking so good! I love Knitpicks Alpaca Cloud Lace. I have used it together with a lot of yarns including Tynn Line and it turned out amazing every time. I can highly recommend putting the blue and yellow ChiaoGoo shorty sets on your Christmas and Birthday Wish List. They are so worth it! The yellow with the larger needles I don't use as often but when I do need those sizes this set is soooooo much nicer to work with than either magic loop or DPNs.
For the skirt waistline, you could do a crochet chain where you planned to do the pick up. Then pick up the crochet chain and knit. It will give the ribbon structure you were talking about!
Just popping in to recommend spiral cable needles. 🌀 Easy enough to slip the stitches on the needle and they stay put because of the spiral shape. All your WIPs are looking fantastic!! Good luck with the Sand Cardi... I have had similar projects that feel endless. Sometimes I put them on timeout, then wait until I have the mental bandwidth to work on them again. I usually then just zone out and blitz through the last part of the project. I hope you find a method that works for you. ☺️
Here' a silly idea, that might work. Starting from mid back, divide your inches left by three, then knit one-third (less than a third of what you have now), then do one of the pockets, then knit another third down the band, and then do the second pocket, then finish the band. Finally you can do the other finishings. I've done other tasks by the timer methods, and they work, so if that works for you go with it. This is just another possible suggestion.
Well it took me three days to be able to finish your podcast this time! And what a treat it was! Always love your excitement and what beautiful projects!
Suggestion: It's is Sept. 29th. Give yourself 6 weeks to complete the double band. Divide the remaining band into 6 equal parts and put in 6 stitch markers. Your goal is now to remove 1 stitch marker every Sunday for the next 6 weeks.
I probably got a different pack than you did from Amazon for my cable needles. Mine came with several "J" hooks of different sizes and kinked straight hooks, (along with stitch holders and some other stuff. I've been using the more open "J" hook, but you know options are a wonderful idea. I'll put the full name below, but it's not an active link, so it should be fine. The Beatrix Cardigan wasn’t even on my radar until you started knitting it so beautifully and now it is going on my list for sure 😍 I’m Picking up the bottom ribbing of the Right Across Sweater for my 7year old - i’m making it out of the most beautiful fall colored yarn from my stash which has kept me obsessed (and thank goodness cause the construction was not for me! ) i have completely neglected all my other wips 🤦🏼♀️
It is probably my most proud knit at this point! I can’t recommend it enough!! Sometimes it’s so nice to just get lost in one piece!! What a lucky kiddo!
I have not come across a cable hook before 🤯 That definitely sounds like it will be my preferred method. I’ve got a cable pullover planned for my fall/winter knits so I will have to pick one up!
Ok 1st LOVE Ossie in his little pumpkin costume!! It just made me smile! And about your mile long band on you cardigan another option for your it to set time knitting for it is play a song or 2 that you enjoy and you just knit for the duration of your "knitting party songs" .... Last year (or maybe it was the year before) I was involved in a "dust em off" KAL and I dug out a 4 YEAR wip that was a 24 row cable repeat and I would call it my vegetable knitting (cant knit on dessert fun knits until i knit my vegetables first) and so I chose at first to only do 8 rows at a time and it would take me 3 days to complete a repeat ...then as i got more used to the repeats I then upped it to 12 rows and would complete a repeat in 2 days. I even ended up ordering some fun happy veggie progress keepers to attach to any future vegetable knitting projects I may want to tackle down the road.
Hi Nora, I'm currently knitting with boucle yarn and I know just what you mean by not being able to tell the difference between a stitch and a boucle loop. Also it's a nightmare to tink back. So what I have done is put stitch markers every 20 stitches and I'm literally counting as I go. If I have done too many, I do a "broke girl hack" by marking that set of 20 (maybe 19 or 21 at that point) and then either doing a M1R or K2tog on the next round. No one will notice in all that fuzziness! Anyway, I was thinking about you while I was knitting and thought you might find this interesting. Happy knitting x
I’m finishing up (weaving in ends) my Mosaic Jumper by Nomad Stitches. I hate weaving in ends so for me to do this project says a lot. I absolutely love it.
Before you get a whole set of metal DPNs, I would try like one set (maybe your most used size) because I use almost exclusively metal circular needles but metal DPNs actually cut off circulation from my fingertips and I can’t knit on them without my fingers going numb. Never have that issue with wooden DPNs. Awesome podcast! Love the spooky vibes!

Im watching today , as I begrudgingly knit the button band on a cardigan ...... I used your tutorial , and I love it , it just is a loooong process, even for a regular cardi !!!!
Good morning, Nora! Another beautiful podcast. Love love love everything you showed us... beautiful pieces. 🙂 I currently have 3 WIPs right now. A crochet cardigan that I will be gifting in November... a short sleeve tee for me and a pullover for my hubby. Once I am done with these 3 WIPs of mine, I plan on making this combined crochet/knit granny square cardigan. I have actually been wanting to do this ever since I learned how to knit. I wanted to combine this two arts in a project. I was watching Stephanie's podcast of Edible Thoughts Knits recently and she featured this type of crochet/knit project. And it just confirmed that this should be my next project. Would you also consider doing a review per se of those yarns that you were gifted once you begin your project? I would love to know your take on those yarns as those were also on my "wish list" to someday purchase but have put on hold because I'm just not sure. LOL
Nora, don't be intimidated by laddering back! I used to be, but now find it to be incredibly satisfying. knowing that you can fix those annoying oversights, without frogging or tinking, is incredibly freeing. It takes a fraction of the time and you'll be amazed at the outcome.
I feel ya with the US sizes of needles and hooks!! They are absolutely meaningless to me!! I always refer to the mm and don’t even really have any idea what they translate to in us 😂. I think bc I’ve worked with beads and can visualize mm based on bead sizes 😆 but I think I’m in the minority there ✌🏽🫶🏽🧶
I too rely on mm for needle size and I prefer to measure in cm. I use inches to get me in the ballpark, but switch to cm to get the exact length, or choose a bust size etc.
So glad to see a video from you! I was sad that I didn’t get to hang out with you last weekend but totally understand you needing a week off. I know you said you don’t like magic loop for sleeves. Have you looked at traveling loop? I find I don’t get any ladders as I make sure to pull the loop through at different places but my sleeves move much faster when you get down to the final stitch count around the wrist.
It took me a long time to realise that US needles and imperial needles are not the same, in fact they count in the opposite direction! So confusing! I inherited a bunch of knitting needles and have bought my own both new mm ones and ones from charity shops. Luckily I also inherited a size gauge that has all the options 😂
i TOTALLY agree with you on the US vs mm sizes thing. the US sizes are so arbitrary, and there are some sizes in needles and hooks that don't have a US equivalent. while we don't use mm for most measurements in America, it is at the very least an objective measurement/size scheme, where the US sizes are based on pretty much nothing 😮💨they count up from 2mm, but that's definitely not the smallest needle size, and they actually skip plenty of sizes as I said! really, who decided a 3mm needle should be given the size "US 2.5", or why a 3.5mm needle is "US 4"? it's so confusing for no reason!!! 😭
Hi Nora! Am I remembering right that with the Cordelia skirt you were doing some sort of twisting of your yarn to avoid having so many ends to weave in at the end? I'm about to start a striped sweater and would like to avoid having too many ends. 😅
Oooh that sweater is such a stunner! I hope you’re loving it! Thank you so much!! He’s definitely feeling better and on the road to recovery! Thank you 🥰

Allo Nora, I hope you're doing well. I like the idea of combining crochet and knitting in one project. Recently, I saw two magnificent projects that combine the two techniques: the Fleetwood by Tanis Lavallee and the Jethro by Tanis Lavallee. Don't give up, you're almost done with the Sand Cardigan. Take care 😀🎃
Maybe knit the waistband seperately, then pick up the stitches and do a three needle bind off for more structure? Would that have that bit of stretch that you need, though?
Yay! Thank you so much for the giveaway! 💓 I sent an email last week but it must not have gone through. I just sent it again, so if you still don’t get it please let me know 🙂
I also much much prefer the mm instead of the "us size". The arbitrary (non-standardized) letters and numbers for crochet hooks and knitting needles is not as understandable to me as the mm. Plus I can measure a needle to get the mm.
I just have a question about knitting needles and try it on tubing. When trying on a garment if you use interchangeable needles why don’t you just add length to your needles with the cable extender instead of fighting with try it on tubing and possibly dropping stitches? Thank you in advance
Such a good question! I definitely have done that in the past and I see no problem most of the time with just using the extenders. The only issue I’ve found-specifically when determining length, is that sometimes the cables and extenders tend to weight the project down or cause it to flare out. So I like to move over to the tubing so get the most accurate measurement for those cases! I hope that makes sense!
👌🏻 Cordelia Skirt : I would message the designer before picking up rather than seaming because Knits by Florence talked about this i’m a review of a much shorter skirt that the seam was integral to the structural integrity of adding the elastic waistband (because the entire skirt hangs off those stitches/ seam - therefore i would ask the designer if something bad would happen if you picked up and knit instead… am I talking in circles? sorry if i am!! Amazing podcast love the Halloween vibes you’ve curated!
For the bleeding fear - did you have any bleeding with the swatch? If you did, I would recommend a quick block in cold water so there isnt time or heat for bleeding to set in. If the swatch was okay in lukewarm water then I would go ahead and block as normal but monitor closely and be ready to rescue it if you see any signs of bleed!

I so appreciate your encouragement!! I think I will try and take on the challenge!
I feel ya with the US sizes of needles and hooks!! They are absolutely meaningless to me!! I always refer to the mm and don’t even really have any idea what they translate to in us 😂. I think bc I’ve worked with beads and can visualize mm based on bead sizes 😆 but I think I’m in the minority there ✌🏽🫶🏽🧶
Me too.. from USA and also use mm for knitting and crochet
I have never even heard of traveling loop!! Now I’m eager to learn more! Thank you!
It took me a long time to realise that US needles and imperial needles are not the same, in fact they count in the opposite direction! So confusing! I inherited a bunch of knitting needles and have bought my own both new mm ones and ones from charity shops. Luckily I also inherited a size gauge that has all the options 😂
I appreciate the advice on the cable needle.
LOVE the spooky! Totally with you.
I've just discovered the spiral cable needle. I love it! I got it on Amazon.
I know people love that one too! I have yet to try it, but am here for anything that helps someone knit a cable!!
i TOTALLY agree with you on the US vs mm sizes thing. the US sizes are so arbitrary, and there are some sizes in needles and hooks that don't have a US equivalent. while we don't use mm for most measurements in America, it is at the very least an objective measurement/size scheme, where the US sizes are based on pretty much nothing 😮💨they count up from 2mm, but that's definitely not the smallest needle size, and they actually skip plenty of sizes as I said! really, who decided a 3mm needle should be given the size "US 2.5", or why a 3.5mm needle is "US 4"? it's so confusing for no reason!!! 😭
I wish all influencers would stop using US sizes and ONLY use mm. A millimeter is a millimeter is a millimeter and we all can understand that!
Hi Nora! Am I remembering right that with the Cordelia skirt you were doing some sort of twisting of your yarn to avoid having so many ends to weave in at the end? I'm about to start a striped sweater and would like to avoid having too many ends. 😅
I’ll do my best to get it together asap!!
Hello Nora-Just getting off of work-watching you while knitting on my ‘Framed Sweater’
Praying that Dad is doing better 🙏🏽
Oooh that sweater is such a stunner! I hope you’re loving it!
Thank you so much!! He’s definitely feeling better and on the road to recovery! Thank you 🥰
@@akaNoraKnits Hey Nora-I AM loving knitting it up… I’m doing a change with the pattern-it looks FABULOUS… I’ll keep you posted 😁
Good 2 hear Dad is on the mend 🙌🏾
hi Nora I just finished the total black spooky jumper for my 7years old nephew and I cast on the Elena by Junko Okamoto ,is an interesting construction ,I love your podcast 💖
That sounds so fun!! I have the yarn and everything ready for the Elena as soon as I can make time for it!
@@akaNoraKnits is a beautiful pattern I’m on the color work at the moment and I love it🥰 I’m a slow knitter and I enjoy stopping and admire it .Nora you are a talented artist and I have so much fun 🤩 watching your videos, your smiling is a joy😂 thank you 🙏 for the time you dedicated to us😘
Your cardigan is looking marvelous!
Allo Nora,
I hope you're doing well. I like the idea of combining crochet and knitting in one project.
Recently, I saw two magnificent projects that combine the two techniques:
the Fleetwood by Tanis Lavallee and the Jethro by Tanis Lavallee.
Don't give up, you're almost done with the Sand Cardigan.
Take care 😀🎃
There’s a granny square cardigan I want to do that has knit sleeves and a knit button band and I love the idea of it
Maybe knit the waistband seperately, then pick up the stitches and do a three needle bind off for more structure? Would that have that bit of stretch that you need, though?
your podcast is my « knitting while i watch a show » show 😄
Good morning Nora!!!
You had Ito right the first time 👍
I disregard the us needle sizes too. Much easier to go by he mm.
Yay! Thank you so much for the giveaway! 💓 I sent an email last week but it must not have gone through. I just sent it again, so if you still don’t get it please let me know 🙂
Spooky intro! ❤
@@akaNoraKnits yes that makes sense thank you
Curious the Cost of the NORO yarn
You have almost 11,000 waiting for you to look fabulous in your sand cardigan. If that's not enough motivation😂
😂😂😂😂 right????
*wood cracked me up 😅
😂😂😂 the coffee just hit different this day
👌🏻 Cordelia Skirt : I would message the designer before picking up rather than seaming because Knits by Florence talked about this i’m a review of a much shorter skirt that the seam was integral to the structural integrity of adding the elastic waistband (because the entire skirt hangs off those stitches/ seam - therefore i would ask the designer if something bad would happen if you picked up and knit instead… am I talking in circles? sorry if i am!!
Amazing podcast love the Halloween vibes you’ve curated!
Ooh that’s so so interesting! I’ll have to do more research h definitely! Thank n you!!! Glad you’re enjoying the spooky vibes too! 🎃
Do you really NEED to do the pockets?
Maybe she wants to??? Pockets are so functional lol
They are most definitely a need for me!!! It’s half the reason I chose this cardigan 😂 anything for a little extra cozziiiinessss 🥰
Ooh, I love your podcasts, but couldn't watch with the giant spider behind you.😢
Sorry, but I am going to skip todays' podcast - arachnophobia.
same
You could always just listen. But seriously I get fears are real but some thoughts and comments should be inside thoughts.
@@lifeoutnumbered Knitting podcasts are visual podcasts. I can't magically envision the projects Nora is talking about without looking at the video. Which means I have to look at the large spider...
Yep, not appreciating the giant spider, though appreciate your enjoyment of the season, Nora
@@lifeoutnumbered I was just letting her know, I don't really get why that should be an inside thought. But just listening could be an idea.
I disregard the us needle sizes too. Much easier to go by the mm.
