BUILT-IN CABINETRY INSTALLATION
Installing built in office cabinetry in this final video of the series.
We attempted to cover the various aspects of the installation process however a couple segments of video didn't take so were making do with the video that we have.
In this particular video you can see our technique for installing these extra large upper cabinets using a temporary platform set up.
Once the uppers were installed and secured to the wall we tackled installation of the header and crown molding(one of the segments we don't have much video of) We did, however, cover the fabrication aspect in a previous video.
With the upper cabinetry completed we turned our attention to templating the desktop (another segment of video we do not have)
And that was the end of day one of the installation. Day two begins with the installation of the base cabinets. After the base cabinets are installed we moved on to installing the large T-shaped desk top. Everything worked out almost exactly as I had planned, however, the desktop was much heavier than I had anticipated. When we fabricated the desktop, which can be seen in a previous video, it was never moved from that location. We performed the fabrication, sanding and finishing all in the same location in the shop. If I had to do it over again I would do it the same way again. Joining the seams in the shop gave us a better finished product rather than installing individual sections.
With the desktop installed it was just a matter of taking care of the final details and cleanup.
We hope you've enjoyed this series and have found the info useful.

We wanted to include these processes in this series as they are, es...
BUILT IN CABINETRY PAINT
Переглядів 5142 місяці тому
We have reached the paint stage of this cabinetry project. In previous videos we have already covered equipment and products, paint prep, primer and now were talking about spraying paint. One thing we haven't really talked about is the fact that we finish 99% of our projects in our shop and then install the finished product. We find this process is economical, we can control the setting in our ...
Built In Cabinetry - Spraying Primer

We're talking primer in our latest video in our docuseries covering the different aspects and processes of completing a large built project. For nearly all of our projects we use Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer for all surfaces. A couple of the primary features I like are the adhesion and stain blocking qualities. After the primer coat is dry we will sand all surfaces, clean and prep all surfaces ...

As we continue on with our docuseries covering the various aspects and processes that go into completing a large builtin project we wanted to take a moment to discuss our paint set up. In this video we discuss our paint sprayer, and product like out preferred primer, paint, clear coat, etc. Oddly enough, as a carpenter, one of the most common questions I get asked is about paint, our spray setu...
CABINETRY PAINT PREP & STAGING
Переглядів 4072 місяці тому
With the fabrication of this large builtin complete we are ready to prep for paint. Prepping for paint includes staging all of our cabinets and cabinet parts in the paint room and cleaning everything so that everything is dust free. The key to a good paint finish is the prep work. Taking the time to properly prepare your cabinets will save time and headache on down the line. Perhaps a boring vi...

Fabricating a large 'T' shaped desk top for a built-in office project. Our latest video in the series documenting the various steps involved in completing a large built-in cabinetry project takes you through the fabrication of the butcher block desk top. This was a bit of a daunting task. I have built this particular configuration in the past and I just cut and prepared 3 separate pieces and in...
CABINETRY CROWN MOLDING
Переглядів 3593 місяці тому
Adding crown molding to a set of cabinetry. In this particular video we're fabricating a 3-piece crown molding to finish off this project. We will often use a similar technique whether it's the look we want or we need the added height. For this particular project we have 11' ceilings so, we have built our cabinetry 10' tall and this built up crown will fill the 1' space between the cabinets and...
CABINET CONSTRUCTION - EDGE BANDING
Переглядів 8673 місяці тому
Edge banding the front edge of plywood shelves. Continuing in our series documenting the various processes of completing a large built cabinetry project. In this video we are looking at edge banding the shelves. We don't do a lot of edge banding so we don't have any big equipment for this process. Just because we don't do enough to warrant large equipment doesn't mean it isn't a good skill to h...

Custom Builtin Process Start to Finish
From a cabinet guy who builds a few hoods a month, I learned your way from your video and I like it! Good job!
Can i ask what software are you using to design kitchen cabinets
Thank you. This is the idea I needed to make my plain wood cabinet doors better looking 😊
Since the two hardware elements are identical, do you think it matters whether the mortises are in the rail or the leg?
What paint did you end up using for the finish??
You are very good at what you do. So nice to see someone do a top notch job!
I appreciate that!
It's been great watching each step of your process and how it works!
Wonderful series, great final result. All that planning, and to sit against the door jamb after that top went in, and say whew, makes it all worth it!
Glad you enjoyed it. It’s always a relief but this one especially!
Love the tech! Lol. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I love the craftsmanship, and always appreciate you walking us through how you do things. But I’m perplexed on this room…is it 12 feet high? How in the world is someone going to access the top shelves in those upper cabinets without standing on the desk? And the drawers in those upper cabinets…they’re above your head so I can’t see how you can see what’s in the drawer.
Thanks for the feedback. 11’ ceilings. Upper sections were definitely not meant for everyday use. Client wanted the cabinetry to go all the way to the ceiling so that’s what they got!
@@CarpentryPlus thanks for the info! The client gets what the client wants. 😀
Not only significant but a part of the project, but one where a mistake is very expensive!
Definitely costly at this phase.
Nice pieces👍🏼
How long did that take you?
I been spraying BM Advance Pearl finish and its been turning out great and smooth like glass. I tried spraying BM Regal Ulti-Matte (flat) in black recently and it dried rough to the touch and not smooth at all. Any idea what im doing wrong? I noticed ulti-matte is thicker than advance. Would a thicker paint cause a rough finish? Thanks
I’ve never sprayed any of those products so I don’t think I’d be much help to you.
Why 3 layers of the 1/4 inch plywood?
Might not have been necessary but I wanted 3/4” thickness but didn’t figure I’d get 3/4” plywood to flex.
Really appreciate you stepping through this, it’s a process I need to add!
No problem. Thanks for the feedback.
Which tip?
FFLP 310
What do you use for cleaning primer out of the x5? I find cleanup a little more difficult with the primer. I know from experience of cleaning rollers and paint brushes that simply running water through it wont necessarily clean it 100% and will build up over time
Man I just flush it with water.
This is a great video but a little more info would be helpful. I'm a weekender without much router experience and I burned up a flush cut router bit on an acacia butcher block countertop. Probably running too fast, but I'm thinking that acacia might be harder than the countertop in the video too. I'm trying again with a straight bit making several passes so I can bite off less than the full depth of a longer flush cut bit like used in the video. So in general some pointers about tools being used would add a helpful element to these videos. Probably a lot of viewers are amateurs.
How much weight does this hold?
Depends on overall size and I’ve never tested them but I’d say they could hold 40 pounds.
This is so beautiful’
THank you!
What do you charge for something like this?
For the renderings or for the project itself? Shoot me a private message or email for pricing.
Can i special order the shelf’s
Yep! Contact us through our website to discuss your order.
I’m enjoying these as painting is a process I want to start offering, appreciate you sharing!
Thanks for the informational video. As an instructor I couldn’t stop focusing on how much you rock back n forth. But good content
Thanks. Maybe I’ll work on that next. Right now I’m trying not to say ‘um’ so much. 🤣
I think you bolted the m overhead shelves with lags to studs. It looks really cool and open without supports in the way. I do not think supports are necessary unless someone is stacking paint cans or something. I am curious if you bolted a high and low bolt and how them being 2x4 and not 2x6 helps get that back board more secure. Just a guess, that is how you made them. Maybe I am not seeing something.
The 2x4 frames of the shelves are nailed to the wall and we used 1/8” diameter cable and eye bolts as supports.

The hood looks absolutely amazing. It’s not pretty good. It’s absolutely amazing.
Thanks!
Great video. Which spray guard is compatible with 310?
The blue one.
Is there a reason you don’t use the kem aqua for paint since you’re already using the clear?
Years ago when I first inquired about kem aqua the sales person wasn’t very knowledgeable about the product or even how to order it. I eventually became familiar with the Emerald and liked it well enough. Fast forward a few more years and I was looking for a good water based clear and inquired again. Had to keep pressing them but got them to order me some and I’ve been pretty happy with it.
@@CarpentryPlus I ran into the same thing. The reps acted like they had no idea what I was even talking about when I asked so I stuck with the Sherwood precat for the past 4 years since that’s what I was already using, but the fumes and clean up and everything that accompanies a lacquer has really gotten to me. The new rep I’ve been talking to got me some test gallons of the primer and paint in Kem aqua so hopefully they’re comparable to the finish of the precat so I can switch over. I appreciate your response and as always you do amazing work.
Have you considered giving Gemini Evo a try? We use it exclusively and get great results. Primer sands very well and great finish
Never heard of it. Who makes it?
@CarpentryPlus Gemini coating. We get it from our Benjamin Moore dealer locally. It's water-based. We switched to it from lacquer based paint. The smell is very minimal, and dry time is super fast. Very easy to spray. I'm a cabinet builder at our shop and I'm able to spray it with good results on my side jobs.
Gallery is where it as at now, as I have used it on 4 or five projects, and will not go back to Emerald unless I have to for a kitchen that I cannot spray boxes. Gallery will not roll well at all. I have been using a mixture of Emerald and Gallery in those instances, but all my new cabinetry gets Gallery every time! Great video!
Barkeeper's Friend is my goto, but it needs a water rinse (sort of).
You made that all look so easy!
We appreciate your effort bringing us this detailed build. It's great to see a professional at work. Thanks for Sharing!
I appreciate that!
I hope he "enjoyed" all the sanding time with his Dad! LOL! Great video, Lets me know I am not overkill on my sanding technique either. Every project has more sanding than I think it should, but the sprayed results don't lie, and all that sanding is worth it!
SO COOL!!!! Sometimes when you want to do a one-time DIY project buying all the tools needed can be insanely expensive. Old-timer's used what they had and, unless it's your business or you need a large quantity, I think we should all try to improvise more!
I agree!
What if you have a block wall behind with furring but the size of shelves you want doesn’t get the furring ??
How exactly did you make that template?
Never mind found your response to somebody else
None of my friends are into woodworking so they don’t appreciate the score I just made. I recently was givien a 24 inch grizzly drum sander. From a lady whose husband passed away, he was a cabinet maker and she was foreclosing on her house and it would’ve ended up in the trash. I couldn’t believe she just gave it to me. It was a sad situation. I also picked up a festool kapex and grizzly table saw from her for 600 bucks total. I have a feeling you will appreciate this. I’m still in shock.
Sounds like a heck of a find!
@@CarpentryPlus you ain’t kidding!
Just use some @flitz no need for the sanding
Good work man, you did a great job!!! In my opinion thats the best way! Simple and easy, and i bet that equipment you used was already in your shop. ❤😃
Just do the Coke soak a wipe that corrosion right off, much simpler and easier.
Looks like you have it. But phosphorus acid works really good. I have a metal fab shop and went on vacation and this same exact thing happened to my brand new assembly table. I alsmot cried when I got back and seen it. Literally the only place it leaked was right above that brand new bare metal table. Something my grand father done on his wood shop was sprayed the surfaces down with pleadge furniture polish before a weekend or a few days out of the shop.
Good stuff rex
Does a drum sander really work for nice work?
Yeah it does pretty good especially with getting the doors flat after assembly. We’ll sand them with a random orbital sander as well.
If the bit depth is set "pretty close", wouldn't moving the fence in and out change the bit height in relation to the workpiece?
No, I don’t believe adjusting the fence will change the bit height.
Amazing idea!
Thanks
Hi Rex - I have watched this and other videos and have a question - when installing a 1/4” plywood back for lower cabinets, do you recess it or just staple it to the back of the cabinet.
For lower cabinets we actually don’t usually put backs on at all. I don’t feel like it adds anything structurally or aesthetically. For uppers we will usually recess the 1/4” plywood back unless we’re in a wall to wall scenario and then I’ll just staple them on.
Best video on UA-cam for cutting out sink hole!!!
Thanks, appreciate it!
