  • Fabricating a large 'T' shaped desk top for a built-in office project.
Our latest video in the series documenting the various steps involved in completing a large built-in cabinetry project takes you through the fabrication of the butcher block desk top.
This was a bit of a daunting task. I have built this particular configuration in the past and I just cut and prepared 3 separate pieces and installed them but I wanted to step up my game this time and make the seams better by joining the pieces in the shop to make a more seamless finished product.
We started by cutting our pieces to size, marking and laying out our joinery, cutting the joinery and then final glue-up and assembly. For the joinery we are using a combination of biscuits an countertop connectors called Zip-Bolts.
After the pieces were joined and the glue had dries overnight we tested the strength of the joinery and discovered the joinery was plenty strong but the center section had too much flex so we needed to add some reinforcements. Once the reinforcing board was added I was confident that the desktop could be maneuvered with the joinery or the wood failing.
Finally we added a 1/8" round over to all the exposed edges and it was ready for final sanding and finishing.
