  • Sanding, sanding, sanding and more sanding!!
In our latest video in our series documenting the various aspects of competing a large builtin cabinet project werre talking about sanding.Specifically, were talking about 4 different aspect, sanding face frames, sanding doors, sanding a butcher block desk top, and sanding primer.
We'll be using an assortment of different electric sanders and a drum sander but you'll hear me say it more than once that your hands are your most important and valuable tool when it comes to sanding...I suppose that could be said for carpentry and woodworking in general.
For the faceframes, we use a random orbit sander to do the bulk of the work and follow that up by sanding the edges with a sanding block and hand sand paper.
Moving on to the door sanding, we'll do most of the work at the drum sander where we'll get the doors sanded flat and then head back over to the sanding table where we give them all a thorough once over with the random orbit sander and follow that up with some more hand sanding to clean up all the edges.
After we completed the fabrication of the butcherblock we needed to do some pretty extensive sanding to prepare it for finish. We once again turned to our random orbit sander to complete a bulk of the work along with some hand sanding around the edges.
Finally, we're in the paint room where are cabinets are in the primer stage. This is a very important step in the finishing process. The primer will cause the grain to raise and once dried the surface will be rough and must be sanded. We'll use our 3x4 electric sander to tackle the bulk of the work and follow that up with more hand sanding.
In conclusion, there's a lot of sanding that goes into a project like this and we're just covering the 4 main aspects. Be sure not to skip these steps!

I hope he "enjoyed" all the sanding time with his Dad! LOL! Great video, Lets me know I am not overkill on my sanding technique either. Every project has more sanding than I think it should, but the sprayed results don't lie, and all that sanding is worth it!

None of my friends are into woodworking so they don’t appreciate the score I just made. I recently was givien a 24 inch grizzly drum sander. From a lady whose husband passed away, he was a cabinet maker and she was foreclosing on her house and it would’ve ended up in the trash. I couldn’t believe she just gave it to me. It was a sad situation. I also picked up a festool kapex and grizzly table saw from her for 600 bucks total. I have a feeling you will appreciate this. I’m still in shock.

Does a drum sander really work for nice work?

Yeah it does pretty good especially with getting the doors flat after assembly. We’ll sand them with a random orbital sander as well.
