My Watercolor Palette for Portraits: 18 colors for mixing all skin tones!
I find the difference with the Akademie line as opposed to any professional grade is how it glides across the paper and how it dries. It is nearly impossible to get rid of hard edges with Akademie, and it always tends to dry with a glossiness when heavily pigmented that is characteristic of all student grades. It's a very good student grade watercolour, but a student grade all the same. I'll be sticking to using it with my urban sketches, rather than any more serious watercolour painting...
My Palate doesn’t contain cerulean blue yet. I going to youse Ultramarine blue, sometime mixed with a hint of burnt sienna. But I want to buy cerulean blue next time, its such a lovely colour.
It absolutely is delightful! I love it for sky. You will not regret it.
😍
Beautiful little people 😍
I like the Lavender from Daniel Smith and Mijello Mission Gold (looks similar) in a Mix with the Jaune Brilliant 1 + 2 from Mijello Mission Gold. Last Weekend I was in a Painting lesson with a lovely Artist (Anna Kataian). She shows me how perfect these colours are mixing in a maritim evening painting. Mijello is an South Korean brand and Mission Gold is the artist grade. You should buy a dot card. The dots in it are very large. Its really nice.
bad light and shadows here - makes it super hard to compare and see the real colors 😞
A good excuse to shoot a new video about my new burned Siennas! 😄
Fascinating palette!
I agree 🥰
Merci beaucoup ! ♥️
Beautiful painting. This set is really cool. I love that gray sky you created. I'll try to use my gouache too.
Thank you for this interesting review. I loved watching you paint!
Thank to you!
What an interesting way to make convenience mixes based on history. Is there a vermillion hue? It would be nice to see some separating mixes but I don’t know if there are any historical ones that separated.
Hi!! Separation is a more contemporary trend, so it’s not present in this palette. Colours are those that you see, then there is a larger palette with 8 pans but I have not swatched it.
I like her tutorials & got her landscape book but she uses (inks) and hard for me to figure out the real (by pigment code) colors as use tube paints.
Hi! Sorry for the late reply. What counts more in Watercolor are values, more than hues. Just pick a colour that you like and looks similar!
I recently discovered your channel and found your insights about pigments so interesting! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I thought the mungyo professional watercolors were good for portraits but I found out the reds were fugitive. I've learned a lot so far! ♥
Thank you so much! You made my day! ❤️
I have found some information about Bright Red from the artiscreation website. Bright red from Sennelier is grouped under PR254 (Pyrrole Red). Also there is a PR3 Bright Red but not saying it is from Sennelier.🧐Maybe I have to do my own lightfast test. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for all information.🥰
Thank you so much! Very helpful. Also, thank you for your nice words ❤️
Sennelier and Paul Rubins are my Prussians... and I LOVE Sennelier. It is what I am looking for when I dip into Prussian.... or Hookers green. P.R. is my go to Hookers. I struggled to get that olive green that I loved in PR. Jut a touch of burnt sienna brought it out. Debs in Montana
Thank you Debs!! Yes, I love what you said! Sennelier has a wonderful Prussian Blue and PR has beautiful, often underrated colors!
Thank you so much for this comparison! I primarily use Roman Szmal's Green Earth in my palette, it's fantastic for color correcting subtleties in portraits without overwhelming the skin tone. However I am running low on my pan and instead of wasting pans I wanted to buy a tube of PG23 instead to refill with, and your comparison really helped in my decision making!
It’s always a good idea to refill with pans….and a fun activity!! Which one did you choose? Not an easy task!
@@WatercolorElisabetta The two I'm looking at are QoR's Terre Verte or Schminke's Green Earth (thank goodness they're right next to each other haha)! I prefer to keep single pigments in my palette but I think the schminke mix looks pretty close to what I already use to look past that. I'm going to likely buy both and compare them.
I really love the Schminke!!
Ciao, Elisabetta! Paul Rubens has yet another version of Green Earth, called "Verona Green Earth", also Pg23. It's similar to the Rembrandt one.
Ciao Virginia!! In che set l’hai trovata? Paul Rubens ha colori bellissimi! (I hope you speak Italian LOL)
@@WatercolorElisabetta Ali Express, not in a set but single tube. I've sent a message for you on your Instagram page.
The separation is very impressive. Unfortunately there are only five colors in this set, and three of those are virtually indistinguishable. IMO, there are only nominal differences among Aurora Red, Aurora Pink, and Aurora Blue. In fact the Aurora Blue probably shouldn't even be called 'blue, unless they rename Aurora Pink "green"? I think this set needs more tinkering in the lab in order to provide five distinct dominant colors.
I assume you didn’t like the set! Actually, I like the subtle differences among them. It’s a small fun set but for sure not a must have!
This set is the top of my wish list right now but I'm unable to get in Australia yet. Haven't seen on AliExpress so will have to check that out. Otherwise, I've asked my local art store to get them in asap 😆. Thanks for the review 👍🏻
Hi! Have you tried the link in the description box? That is where I bought it on Ali Express
Hi from South Africa. It’s still unavailable in SA n I’m waiting to get my hands on one. Unfortunately even via Amazon the shipping cost is almost as much as the actual cost so I’m going to have to wait for it to become available in SA just like how I’m still waiting for the art nouveau set. Thanks for a lovely video.
Hi!! I had your same problem so I bought it on Ali Express. I don’t pay customs from China, but I’m not sure about SA! Thanks for commenting…
I am having so much fun learning how to use this wonderful set. I have been working on using them in A.Mass tone. A little tricky as if not careful they come out brownish I like the fact that they make absolutely gorgeous backgrounds for Doodling. Thank you so much for sharing your reviews.
Thank you you for this super kind comment! I will immediately try one of them as a background…great idea!
If you want to use in mass tone why not follow the directions? It specifically states to get more colors, to use a mass tone color, mix with large amounts of water, allow colors to seperate, then use the isolated colors in mass. It might defeat the purpose of having these, but you'll get exactly what you wanted. To me they look like a dye mixed with a pigment. Like maybe orange dye mixed with real viridian. Whether that is true and accurate that's a different basket of tomatoes lol. I don't know what it is other than beautiful. Especially seeing them used to paint these gems. I saw another video of these swatched which did not do them justice. I wonder if mixing an ink with a pigment would offer the same results. Hmm, now I have something to do today. Experiments begin after my coffee lol. I hope you ladies have a blessed day and thanks for the video.
@phillipstroll7385 thank you for your comment!! Will you let me know about your experiments? Sounds fun!
Urca…..vado subito a vedere!! Grazie mille del suggerimento 😄

How can it be both English and Venetian? 😂
Parents from different countries
Della Magna
Hi! I do not know exactly what is your question. But I don’t think Della Magna has Phthalo Turquoise….
I always get hard edges - what am I doing wrong?
Hi! There could be more reasons..try putting water on paper and stop paint before the edge so it will naturally diffuse…or it can be the paper. When it’s hot I get more hard edges because the paint dries fast. Just experiment! Try working wet on wet anyway…
Very nice! Love your doggies x
Thank you!! ♥️ my dogs are adorable, they appreciate your words!
I loved your little demo painting. That Field’s Orange almost has a slight fluorescent glow to it. I really loved the Ultramarine Ash as a ready made pale sky wash. I thought the darker colours were all incredible staining they seemed to cling to the paper in your swatches and not move once laid down.
True! Very staining! Also, that day was so hot that favoured dry edges. Thank you for your kind comment 😀
@@WatercolorElisabetta yes it's been incredibly hot, I wondered if that might be the cause x
Yes, probably…
That purple was stunning. Also liked the green. Your sketch was wonderful
Thank you Cheryl! I’m glad you liked these colours 😄
I love Lisa Steel’s mix for buff titanium and would like to get the trio of transparent red oxide, French ultramarine, and the yellow… Is it called rosana? I am looking online and not finding it. Maybe I got the name wrong? Please if it is not to much trouble to tell me the name?
Hi Amanda! I think you are talking about Liz Steel! www.lizsteel.com/buffandfavouritebuildingmixes/
@@WatercolorElisabetta yes! Thank you for your time. So helpful and kind! I have been wanting to put together a minimalistic palette for urban sketching and I knew about ultramarine and burnt sienna but it just wasn’t quite right or enough. Maybe the shift to red oxide and the yellow will be it! I loved the results you showed in this video with it🤩

these look crazy, what an interesting palette ☺☺
Yes, a bit crazy! But I agree, very interesting!!
Interesting original colours.
That’s why I like it! It’s very original. Thank you!
I’m not impressed with those colours frankly
It’s very fortunate we all have our own taste!
So I've thought this in one of your previous videos but I wasn't sure so I didn't say anything, but it almost looks like the sizing on your paper has gone bad. Paint shouldn't stain and "stick" there quite so much (on your swatching paper). What do you think? I loved seeing these colors and your painting.
Yes, the paper is not the best, but usually it behaves better! Maybe this unbearable heat doesn’t help (I hate AC so i don’t use it). On the other hand that’s the paper where I collect all my swatches and I would like to be consistent. Thank you for your comment Miranda!
Please review that book.looks interesting
I will Maria! Thank you for asking! 🤩
Thank you for sharing with us ❤
Thank to you for your kindness!
Your title says Limited Edition, I can't find any information from W&N to back up this claim of limited edition. That title could put people off buying, as why get into a range of pigments that are temporarily available.
I have this information from Momarte, the online store I bought it from. It clearly says “limited edition “. I have read it also on Artist pigments website artistpigments.org/brands/winsor-and-newton-professional-water-colour/rr2y3-ostwald-grey.
