  • Hello friends! I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
    Today we I'm comparing 2 budget friendly watercolour sets: the studio watercolor set by Lefrancs Bourgeois versus a similar set by Stationary Island.
    When I saw them on Amazon I thought they looked very similar: are they really so?
    I'm comparing them also with Giotto, a very common children brand, apparently very good for the price.
    I will also try some quick sketch of people in ink and watercolour.
    Come swatch with me! And comment please! What is your experience low budget paint?

    I had to re-watch this to practice the little people. So much fun! I have avoided painting people in my landscapes...but these little figures could be a game changer. Thabks, Elisabetta

    Thanks for this. Some inexpensive sets are good. I found the Koh-i-noor opaque watercolour set outperformed than the Caran d'Ache Studio pan gouache for a fraction of the price. As ever I am always curious about how they perform as I still remember my childish frustration with misbehaving materials sold for students which evaporated when gifted my first Cotman set. I do like your little people !

      @@WatercolorElisabetta No. The opaque one is in a flat pallete with 12 pan colours and a tube of white . I will research and send a link if I can find one. The stackers are mostly dye based and different.

    I’ve been wondering about the Stationary Island set. Not for myself, but as a present for a young artist. So this is very helpful ❤

    Thanks for this! That Lefranc & Bourgeois palette seems interesting. My guess is that these cheap paints are most likely dye based rather than pigment based. Low quality can be frustrating if someone wants to start watercolours more or less seriously. Fine for kids, though, who will not care about pigments and only want to play. In my opinion the Van Gogh starter set (12+3) for €15.50 is the bar to beat. It is excellent quality and will not break the bank. It has many mono pigment colours yo make excellent mixes - and the portable palette is sturdy and has many mixing areas. I love your little people. I need to practice these!!! Thanks!

      @@WatercolorElisabetta Thanks for the response. 😂 You will like van Gogh.They are transparent and well pigmented for artist grade paint. Tubes are around 2€ in 🇩🇪 each (3.6€ in 🇮🇹). Schmincke Akademie Set of 12 costs over 33 € in 🇩🇪 making the van Gogh set even more interesting. I don't work for them, but, like you, I am very interested in trying different art supplies. Check them out, I am sure you will find them interesting. Thanks again for your video!

      I agree on the Van Gogh set: the quality of the paint is perhaps not quite as good as Winsor & Newton's Cotman range, but the selection of colours in the 12+3 palette is almost perfect. Of course, the extra 3 half pans give them a little more latitude over the traditional 12 pans, with 2 controversially taken up by a white and a black!

    • @berolinastrassmann
      @berolinastrassmann 5 місяців тому +1

      @@cowbutt6 You are right. I have replaced the white with an additional yellow. I am testing the black to do "faux" dusk colours, by mixing them with the regular colours. It would work best with oxide black (PBk11) rather than with the non Granulating black from the tin. It is still OK to play and experiment. I will replace the black when it is empty 😂. I am trying to be frugal 😳

    Thank you for reviewing these budget sets! I really appreciate it. Especially as a beginner it is so important to have supplies that you are not scared to use and experiment with. I have a 50-paper watercolor block by Stationary Island, and I love using it for ink and wash, doodles, and just making a mess. I finished half of it during Inktober.
    I have started making my own paints lately so I definitely don't need any more paints 🤣 But I might give Lefranc a go just because of how nice the colors look. So much mixing possibility.
