  • Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
As you know, Schmincke has just released some Retro Products; they include different sets, with current paint but original vintage design, as well as a wonderful historical color currently out of production: Cochineal Red. Cochineal is a natural pigment, named NR4, extracted from the carcasses of cochineal, a little insect (LOL it sounds a bit disgusting).
I will unbox 2 sets, swatch the Cochineal Red, and compare it with an Italian handmade Genuine Cochineal Carmine, by Della Magna.
I encourage you to visit Della Magna website at en.dellamagna.com/product-pag...
I am also trying to sketch some quick and loose cherries to test out this colour!
As usual, I would love to hear from you! Comment please!

I recently purchased this paint from Schmincke and was blown away at the strength of the pigment. It is hard to capture on camera, but that shade of red is amazing. Looking forward to your next video with the mixes. And your cherries are lovely💕

Thanks a lot for your words! YES! very hard to capture on camera!! 📷 it must be seen in person. Such a beautiful product…I find that lightfastness issue in my case is overrated as I basically only sketch in sketchbooks. Cheers, Elisabetta.

So glad companies have noticed you. You deserve it, imo.
I got the bijou box, but from whiskey painters, years ago. Maybe a decade or two ago. I haven't left the house without my pocket since. It's still holding up strong even after years of daily use.

Dear Phillip, first of all, thank you so much! I know you don’t easily compliment, so very flattering. I immediately double-checked this whisky box: it’s wonderful! I had seen a version by W&N but I didn’t know this one. So I immediately put it in my wishlist. Which brings me to my next point. Do you really take it with you when you go out? I must start doing it, but I’m a bit self conscious sketching in public. What sketchbook do you use? Thanks 😄

So glad to see this review andthanks for the beautiful cherries. I appreciate that you always paint something inaddition to swatching. I am so tempted that retro palette! But I already have some of the colours. I would totallybuy it if they sold it empty. You know those cute Schmincken bijoux tins are made by FOME in Italy? I wonder if you can find them as empty palettes over there. I loved the yellow -its like a bit of sunshine on paper. The cochineal is nice, but cannot justify getting it. I already have a halfpan of genuine cochineal by Wallaceand Seymour, but it looks much paler and soft. It's part of their historical collection. I got some Malachite from them too. I wonder what makes them so different?😮;thanks Elisabetta (and @momarte for sending you the tin)

Delightful. It was interesting to see how much more depth the underpainted background gave to the Della Magna swatch cherries compared to the Schminke one.

This red is so beautiful and I will definetly buy a tube of it. Still thinking if I buy a palette or on it's own. I do have a lot of schmincke paints so I will definetly get some doubles in a palette but the whole retro line is so beautiful.

It's curious they should look so amazingly similar, because they are made from two different cochineal pigments. NR4 is usually a little cooler/bluer than the NR4:1 Schmincke use. I see Della Magna actually make two cochineal reds; Carmine and Magenta, but they use the same NR4 pigment for both. Fascinating stuff! :)

Thank you for sharing these pigments, and your painting of the cherries was lovely. 😍 I believe you can find many shades of cochineal pigment, depending on how they process it. Both of your NR4s were gorgeous. I love your comparisons.

Thank you Tracy! I saw a video with Cochineal from Lutea, and honestly you are right, very different….i adore the magenta hue of Schminke and Della Magna, you can mute it down if you like but it’s a wonder when used straight of tube/pan. How are your dogs? (I think they are girls, right?)

    • @TracyIndy
      @TracyIndy 5 місяців тому +1

@WatercolorElisabetta The Lutea has a beautiful color, leaning more towards blue. I've seen many photos of color variations while looking at hand dyed, cochineal yarn of the same material.
The pet fur in your video made me giggle.😂 Thank you for asking about the girls Elizabetta. Izzy and Chloe are happy and healthy, but we've had a few too many sibling battles recently. Hopefully, a dog trainer will sort us out soon. 🥲 Have you seen your son since the New Year? 🥰 I'm wishing you and yours a great 2024.

Thoroughly enjoyed this review and comparison, and more to come of these sets too. I got the bijou and immediately augmented the set. Really delighted with it, but had to forgo the cochineal, I would have bought a 5 ml tube but they do not sell them open stock.
From your video it struck me that while being incredibly similar the della magna cochineal had a very slightly more bluish undertone in wash that I really liked. I know nothing of this brand at all!
I loved your underpainted cherries, so effective and a very new technique for me. Maybe the pigment will be more durable over time also for the extra layers? It would be interesting to know more about the technique, which is kind of very imprecise but gives a better impression of solidity and being tangible, sort of shimmery in a way.
You always bring that little bit extra! Nice complex video that was not all about a brand, but nevertheless introduced us to the product. Many thanks.
I think the :1 in the pigment designation will refer to how it has been processed rather than the pigment alone, similar to ultramarine, where you might get a different grind for instance to deliver a variation.

Hi Lindy! Your messages are always very rich and informative. About lightfastness, I don’t think it fades over time, it just turns more earthy. Della Magna are very fine handmade watercolor, I have a small collection that is slowly growing. About the under painting… I saw it somewhere and I wanted to try it. It’s actually quite effective. I am always looking forward to reading your comments! Thank you.
