- Hi! I'm Elisabetta, a watercolor artist from Italy with a passion for art supplies.
Today we are starting a new watercolor adventure: let's discover Phthalo pigments! They are a family of blues and greens with incredible performance and are perfect for the summer.
Today we are exploring PB15 and it variants, PB16, Pg7 and PG36.
Let's dive in!

I use Phthalo Blue green shade for my botanical paintings. Mixed with yellows, it gives lovely greens. Mixed with permanent rose, the purple-ish colors look natural for flowers.
I will soon try some mixes on video…your sound like great mixes 😊 thank you for sharing
these are so good, I love phthalos ☺☺
Thank you! ❤️
Hi Elisabetta. Been off UA-cam for awhile but caught your video and enjoyed seeing your Phthalo colors. Phthalo blue is such a highly staining color but it is a good mixer. Ciao !
Welcome back! I hope everything is ok. Time off social media can be very good! I use Phthalos for mixing most of the time actually! Thank you for stopping by.
I phtalo tanta luminosita e potenzialita. Bellissimo paesaggio
Ciao Taty! Grazie! Esattamente hai detto bene, luminosità e potenzialità!
I would love to see your mixing with phthalo pigments and anything more about the comparisons😊
yes they are best for mixing!
@CastleMc totally agree!
I love the pthalo colors! Thanks for the reminder to use them more. ❤
We sometimes take phthalo for granted…but they have incredible potential ❤️
I love the phthalo colours and I can’t wait for all the comparisons 💙💚
Me too I’m very curious to see the comparison! Thank you Sonya.
I love the luminous Phthalos blues! Thank you for deep diving - I‘ve got some of them from A. Gallo and some from Roman Szmal and think they are beautiful but not very popular because many people say they are too dominant. I love your summer beach picture and also can’t wait for some nicer weather here in the South of Germany… 🎨❤☀️
Here we are still waiting for summer…thank you very much for your kind words! Yes I agree Phthalos are underrated. PS have a lovely stay in Turin!! I hope you like it.
I am very interested in the pthalo experience, thank you very much 😊
Thank to you Maria!!
I would love to see a mixing video. I almost didn’t put pthalo on my new palette because I don’t reach for it. But I think it’s just me since everyone raves about them. I don’t tend to paint tropical though.
Thank you Lily. I also use PB15 for sky or portrait backgrounds but as you said, they are at their best when mixed. Thank you!
Believe it or not, I was wondering & thought you must be very busy. You've been missed. Now, if you can convince me to appreciate Phthalo colors....that would be great! I have a little aversion to them from oil painting days. xoxo
It’s an acquired taste Michele! ❤️❤️
@@WatercolorElisabetta Excellent video! You made me remember I used a PB16 with a Brown Ochre to paint a few quail eggs and I kinda liked it. Thanks to you I will dig it back out and give it another go!
Pb16 is magical!! ❤️❤️❤️
Yay!!!
Not a fan of Phthalo Green blue shade except with quinacridone magenta it makes great violets. The PB 17 Peacock Blue was a favorite but I understand the pigment is discontinued.
Yes PB17 I think it has been discontinued but I have a pan, very pretty pigment indeed!
I absolutely love pthalo turquoise. I also love aqua green by Winsor and Newton which is also a pthalo pigment, but does not have a color assigned. Do you have this one?? Thanks for the video ❤
I have it!!! I will swatch it soon with my Phthalo turquoises!
By the way, have you got a recommendation for an art supply store in Turin? I‘m going to stay there for some days and love to visit the art supplies and maybe buy some special products…
Hi! The art supply stores in Turin are small and very traditional. I always go to a store named Garignani in via Vanchiglia. The owner is an adorable lady who always gives treats to my dogs! It’s small but well furnished.
@@WatercolorElisabetta Oh, wonderful! Thank you so much for your answer - I‘ll certainly visit them ❤️
Da Vinci's Seaglass is a mixture of PG7 and PB15:4, which I've never seen anywhere else. Do you know anything about that version of phthalo blue and what color it is? The mixed paint itself is a very bright, light and summery turquoise
Hi!! From my researches, PB 15:4 should be even darker and greener than PB 15:3. Stay tuned! I will do more Phthalo videos!! I wish I had that SEAGLASS …
@@WatercolorElisabetta I wasn't going to buy it, I got it for free during a sale. It's gorgeous and makes me dream of a vacation, but I still haven't actually used it. Mostly because I very rarely use phthalo blues
That was a very helpful comparison, thank you!
Which phthalo blue did you use for the sky? It looks warmer than green shade but it's hard to tell on the screen.
BTW, Is PB15:6 always darker and warmer than PB15:1 or is it just these particular brands?
I will soon compare all my Phthalo blues, so you can check it out!! Stay tuned 😁
@@WatercolorElisabetta Thank you. And the sky in your sketch? Was it pure PB15:3 or did you mixed it with some red? I never use it for skies because it seems so green to me but your sky looks much more natural and warmer than the PB15:3 I know
@@cccsssish it’s PB15:3 by Paul Rubens. I sometimes mix it with cobalt blue but not this time. I think it’s ideal for sky!
@@WatercolorElisabetta I'm surprised how natural it looks! I will check it out, thanks!
@@WatercolorElisabetta Cobalt blue in itself is my no. 1 go to for skies
