Peter Ranieri Fishing

This channel is a video log of my kayak fishing passion. I've been fishing both freshwater and saltwater since childhood and have always found fishing to be my #1 hobby. My fishing experience includes:
1. Upstate New York freshwater fishing all species
2. South Florida inshore and offshore saltwater fishing & spearfishing
3. Long Island New York (primarily north shore) saltwater inshore fishing
When the water clarity allows it, I attempt to capture underwater footage of the inshore species in my area. It's amazing how much can be learned from underwater footage while fishing and I hope to continue to improve the quality of the footage over time.

kayak fishing the local wrecks as blackfish season winds down
I was testing out barbless sickle hooks which I do like the sickle shape for holding crabs but I think the barbless hooks are a little too easy to come off as you may notice a lot of the fish come up with the hook half out of their mouth. I think as they swim hard away from the line it come out a bit so I think barbed hooks are the better bet, even though I'm trying to find ways to do less harm to these fish. The wrecks had much better action, so I think the tautog are starting to move out of the foraging areas. You can probably still get good action in heavy structure that is shallow but the spread out boulder stuff on the NY side is done I think.
If I don't see you guys again this year, all the best, see you in spring!

Fishing a tiny wreck for BIG fish in the western sound {Catch Clean Cook}
Переглядів 6 тис.Місяць тому
I find myself constantly being surprised on how there can be so many fish in a concentrated area at this time of year, especially when during the summer, the same piece is completely devoid of life. There were some very nice sized fish in only 35' of water but the structure was sticky and using super light tackle was a bit risky as you will see! A superb morning session in the western long isla...
Long Island Sound's BEST Crab Eaters Caught from the Kayak!

We've had a couple colder nights recently but then it will get warm for a few days and the water temps still haven't dropped too much yet so the fish are very much still in the shallows. Tried a completely new area for the first time and it was a success! Thankfully the wind eventually laid down as I expected and the fish were ready to eat some crabs. This was a jam packed trip with a lot of ac...
Kayak Fishing with crab on a jig in the Long Island Sound!

It was yet again another tough weekend to find a calm enough window to fish from the kayak in the western long island sound (NY side). I waited until mid-day to launch and hid behind a point as best I could while hopping to different boulders to see if I could find blackfish, seabass, and porgies. Every boulder fished different, some had lots of fish, some had very few, some had keepers, some d...
EPIC Blackfish Frenzy with @FishinAccomplished!

These blackfish aka tautog were in an absolute frenzy for about an hour as the tide was ramping up speed. I've never experienced a bite quite this good before and it was truly a special day of fishing. Dan and I both got our personal best blackfish (tautog) right around the same time. I really think these are my favorite fish to find and catch, especially from the kayak. Check out Dan's video o...

This was a windy one! I tried to find a window to fish the weekend opener for blackfish (tautog) in the Long Island Sound region but it was a challenge. I did have quick action at pretty much every spot I tried but the best size and quantity of fish was on a large rock pile in about 20' of water. The motorguide xi3 gps is ideal for this type of fishing and I decided to bow mount it this day due...

The weather is finally starting to cool off and water temps are dropping, its the best time of the year to be fishing IMO. My Dad and I got the chance to get out into the Long Island Sound from the kayaks and quickly found the seabass. There was a good amount of life in almost all the areas we tried but some spots held more keepers than others. Simple 1oz. to 1.5oz. jigs tipped with a squid str...

Headed out early with Dan from @FishinAccomplished to see if the weakfish and seabass were moving in on an area we had tried last year around the same time. This year seemed a bit different, a lot of life out there but most of it was small, and I didn't have too much time to explore. My window to fish was also during the slower moving part of the tide but nevertheless we both got on some fish t...

Great tutorials
Thanks! I appreciate it, always nice to hear if something was helpful.
@PeterRanieriII actually I subscribed yesterday to your channel, I saw a couple of your tutorials and one of a fishing trip and noticed that you have more DIY solutions in your kayak that I would like to see how you solved them. One of those is the couple of external batteries added to your GoPro in front of you...are you helping the connectors with something to made ther waterproof or at least weatherproof?
@@araldf a great observation, yes I have tried to make the battery a little bit weatherproof by greasing all the connections with lubriplate 105 grease and then i wrapped the battery in a bungie to keep it secure but also loop the wire down so any water might drip away. its really not a perfect setup though I have had to buy at least a new battery every season as I get caught in the rain or the swell is just too much and it splashes the battery it will die but they are cheap enough these days only $20 and its worth it to me to have continuous video running on my trips.
I miss fishing.
same here man, same here - just gotta get through a few more months , we got this 💪
Outstanding Job!! Thanks for sharing 😊👍👍
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
It’s awesome he spit out a whole squid 🦑
Ioriginally thought it was a partially digested fish but I think your right, it was just a decent sized squid 🦑!
Nice setup! I wish I could find a Salt Water version of this Motorguide XI3.
thank you! yeah I'm happy I got this when I did, but hopefully they come out with something similar soon!
Idk why porgy are so frowned upon where I’m at, but damn is it good. God forbid you need to pick bones out of something you harvest. Love the vid and recipe my man.
I know, right? haha theyr not even that bony either, doesnt make much sense to me either - thanks man appreciate it 🤙
Hey what size anchor/ weight do you use for the kayak ?
the sinker size? i think on this trip I used 3-4oz. and in the western sound I rarely need to go more than that unless I fish a rip area in a strong tide.
Sorry I meant the anchor you use for your kayak to stay on boulders, what weight anchor ⚓️
@@Waterboy516ohh I’m actually using spot lock on this kayak now so no more conventional anchor. But when I was using a conventional anchor I would use both a 5lb grapple and a 5lb plate or brick tied together and that workes pretty well
@@PeterRanieriII yeah I plan on trying to get to some of the wrecks and boulders next year. I missed my chance on motor guide spot lock. Rumor has it lowrance bought motor guide and is going to start making their version of the xi3 but I’m sure the price will go up quite a bit.
@@Waterboy516 i think both of them are owned by navico so yea that makes sense if they are trying to make something better in collaboration but its really a bummer they discontinued it, your prob right anything they come out with now is going to a higher price. I'm happy i got it when i did but if it has an issue i'm toast, will forever have to figure out the issues with this thing on my own now...
Great video so you only need to put the wire holder thru the top
thanks, yeah I guess technically that transducer wire can go straight to the fish finder unit without needing to go inside the hull but for better wire management I prefer it to be inside the hull.
Great test, we're in the FL Keys fishing right now but hail from NJ. Down here we use the flouro leader along with braid to feel the fish and not have them see the line but when we used to go for big fish like sharks we'd always use mono for when they'd wrap around a bridge piling or go under some structure. The mono was tough stuff compared to any braid or flouro.
Thanks and thats great to hear your experience is in line with mine. I think I'm with you in super clear water the fluoro may help the line shy fish but up against really sharp and rough structures mono is the way to go 💪
As a newbie to kayak fishing I learnt a lot from your video so thank you for posting❤
Thanks man! glad you learned something from it.
Good video thanks
Is your cart the hobie trax 2 or the 2-30 one with the bigger wheels? And also do you think the trax 2 with smaller wheels would still do the job helping with the kayak reverse? I love your videos thanks
@@longislandfish2457 this is the 2-30 larger wheel cart I know it’s crazy expensive but I had messed with many other version of wheels and these just seem to be worth it especially if trekking over sand. I actually don’t think the smaller wheel one would have the same buoyancy as this one and keep the kayak floating like it does with these. I say that because my friend Dan has the smaller ones and he’s able to push them under his kayak into the scuppers while the kayak is floating pretty easy when we get back to landing and I can’t do that at all
@ thank you Peter. Now here is somenthing else I wanted to ask you. I have an outback same model as your first kayak(the blue one) and I want upgrade my seat with an Ascend seat. There’s a bunch of videos on youtube of people doing it, would that affect my balance on the water being that much higher you think? Thanks again
of course, and that is also a great question. I just took a look at that seat and it doesnt look too high, I think if you have good balance and are comfortable in the kayak its not going to affect the stability. But its a great question because when i did a seat riser upgrade to the passport it likely was part of the reason my dad flipped as his balance isn't as good and he doesn't have the same experience of being on a kayak a lot. So my advice would be to try it but test it out in a safer environment the first couple trips and see if its affecting your stability.
You don’t go on the party boats in December,January for cod or pollock?
i used to do those trips years ago - theyr a lot of fun if its not too cold. I just dont have the time as much nowadays. Between 3 little kids and doing house projects my winters now are me trying to get ahead so that I can have the free time in the height of the inshore season
@ have u ever invested in a baclava?
@@sneakz8153 whats that? like a face hoodie?
@ yea, it’s just the hoodie piece with a wind protector for the face, you can also tuck it under all of your clothes so no wind through the crevices
@ I see. That looks like a great idea, you have a specific one you recommend?
If I may suggest for Christmas get yourself a soldering gun, glue lined heatshrink and maybe heat gun if you don't have one as it makes everything much easier and lasts longer.
great suggestion. this video is very old, I have since bought a soldering pen and heat gun and they make life much easier i agree! prob better lasting as well
Hey man. Was thinking about purchasing that garmin fishfinder you have or similar. How do you like it? Haw are the charts? I see sometimes you use your phone for the charts.
I love it. So I used to use my phone a lot more for the relief shading of navionics but my phone kept getting wet so I eventually bought the Garmin Navionics Vision+ chip which cost like $130 but I figured thats cheaper than needing to buy a new phone if it goes into the drink. With that chip this fishfinder is amazing, I have no plans of getting anything else anytime soon
Nice...glad you released himm
do you still use spot lock on the stern if so how it working
@@peggoty75 I do! It works great. I actually prefer it if the conditions are not too choppy and windy and the current is governing my direction
Hell yea, nice striper
HOLY SMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bro you did the damn thing in the Kitchen. I fish out of Narraganset Rhode Island. Had 2 keeper Tautog and 2 keeper SeaBass - Cooked them whole. Also I've read you should bleed them. I did, and the meat definitely tastes even better. What's your opinion on bleeding the fish?
haha thanks, I can get by when it comes to seafood but I'm by no means any sort of cook lol - heck yea cooking them whole is def a great way to do these fish, nice keepers! I usually will cook seabass whole on the day I get them and then filet and freeze in vaccuum seal the rest. And yes I always bleed any fish I plan to eat. It makes a difference, even with the less bloody fish, you're going to get a better meat, I think it stores longer without the blood too, plus it seems a bit more humane to kill the fish quicker
@@PeterRanieriII Appreciate ya my fellow angler! I'm going to double down. Your skills with the Sea Bass and Tautog are on point! We are all looking forward to next season!
Good job Peter great action
Hi Peter great Sea bass and blk fishing 😊.
thanks man, i think those are my favorite to catch out there
Does setting a course work? What about spot lock in stronger current
@@JonR35 great questions. Setting a course, no, as it would def be very difficult to adjust my rudder with the minor directional changes. Spock lock in strong current works great though. And I honestly prefer it in the stern on stronger current days. On windier days I prefer it in the bow since the kayak cuts the waves better that way
Thanks so much for the info!

Peter, I used to surf in 52° water and 52° air back when wetsuits were horrible. Burrr numbing cold. I have been in the U.S.A. for the last six months. I depart for Thailand in 12 hours. I am DONE with eating out of a can, pb&j, cereal, microwave eggs, etc. I am going to be eating Asian food cooked by a FEMALE.... I miss her, her/our daughter, the rice village, HOT weather, and Thai food. I hope you stay warm this winter. Thanks for a season full of great footage. I look forward to your spring return. I tapped the thumbs up button to feed the algorithm monsters.
dang man how did you do that, i dont think ive dove in anything less than 58 and that was with a 5mil wetsuit, i dont do well in cold water. LOL you gotta get back to the home cooked meals my friend! Have a safe flight and enjoy your time there. You will be def warmer than me this winter, lol thanks for all the commentary this season, I'll see you when the weather starts turning up again!
Hey check out west marine they have tsunami carbon shields 2 on sale for 50 bucks I just bought 2 of them, I’m sure u could probably use extra gear 😂
ohhh wow thanks man for telling me! I have always been interested in those rods, ahh so tempting, could always use an extra rod...🤣 what power did you get?
I bought two of the medium heavy’s. My brother in law always uses it to fish same rod. It’s a do all rod. It’s sensitive so you can black fish/ fluke and has enough back bone to pull in over slot bass. When I seen him pull up multiple over slot bass 36in and up on that little rod I was very impressed. I figured I’m going to hopefully get my boat running again next season. my spare rods I let people use are very old and stiff …. I might as well give friends/ family a better experience.
I like that philosphy, have heard good things about them too - just cant put too much pressure on them, but as a back rod for 50$ it looks like a great deal, gunna get one med-heavy. thanks for the head up man!

What Branch Of Service Were you in?
i did not serve. just have friends and family that did.
@ oh ok I saw the flag, I was with coast Guard Station Jones Beach then with ARMY National Guard , be safe out there
@@DHSFEMA awesome - thank you for watching over us 💪🙏 will do
@ Always
Great video. Again you are playing with your drag after a fish hits. When you are reeling it from the bottom, fish takes the jig, and you never set the hook, instead you loosen your drag on it and lost the fish. Set it and forget it. If you have like 15lb line, set it at 7lb and is good enough for the trip. Kudos on releasing that striper!
Im loosening after I set the hook to reduce chance the hook pulls. not fishing heavy structure like from shore on a kayak you get more freedom to do this. if you notice on the striper i didnt touch it once. just my opinion but you should adjust drag based on the fish and your surroundings. set and forget it is oversimplifying
im using 8lb test
Lol why the flag? U serve?

Great video dude where are you located ?
I am on the northshore of Long Island
*You got it bro - I would be thinking about sharks while hanging my feet off the edge like that* 😂😂😂😂
Great video Peter, I need some advice/tips to void ruining my next trip. I fished the Western sound Nov/15th (breezy day, N/W winds) in my usual "hot spot" - a very rocky/huge boulder shoreline in about 9 to 15 feet of water (starting at high tide). I caught 1 baby blackfish. On Nov/3rd, same spot, all big blackfish. Are the fish all moving deeper? what depth and type of structure would you recommend so I can bring home some dinner next time around (before end of November). Many thanks - Gio, Western Long Island Sound.
Gio, I had very similar experience today fishing western sound Ny side. I even pushed into the 30’ range with spread out boulders and very few fish. The 2 wrecks I fished today in 45-60’ had much better action. I really think it’s very much area specific but if there isn’t heavy structure of tightly packed boulders then it’s hard to find them it seems in the shallower stuff. I would def go to wrecks or tightly packed boulders now, the forage type areas are done. Just my limited experience though still trying to figure them out like you!
@@PeterRanieriII Thanks Peter appreciate the tips you are always very good at answering your subscribers' questions. Will try to get out one or two more times before end of November.

Those under water shots are very educational. What kind of knot is that ur tying ur jigs with?
@@jessebiondi846 glad to hear it, I tie the non-slip loop knot (kreh knot) to the jig
Awesome.
What kayak do you have where its stable enough to hang your legs out and in the bay
my kayak is a hobie compass 2021
I’m a beginner!! What kind of hook is that??
hey! its commonly referred to as a "bottom sweeper" jig but there are also many other names and types just like this.
Hi Peter, Western Sound person here out of Norwalk. Why do you cut off the legs of the crabs? I'd think with them on the presentation would be more natural.
Hey keith, I just prefer legs off in the western sound as I feel the smaller fish can grab them and not be close to the hook, its also provides a nice hole to thread the hook when you cut them off. In the eastern sound where they could be bigger more aggressive fish, keeping legs on is probably fine
Great trip! I can't believe how calm the water was, was that yesterday?
Thanks - Hey Steve that was on sunday morning, yeah it was a short window in the morning then got pretty windy by 11a
great video love the sunrise thanks for the knowledge and fishing action👍
That sunrise was unreal! love hearing your appreciation on that as well, thanks for watching!
Solid content, man! I get a lot out of your tog videos, it's helped me successfully target togs pretty consistently down here in NC during the winter.
That’s awesome to hear! they are so much fun to catch prob my favorite, and it’s always cool to see tog anglers from other places! go get em!
Always a good idea to string them up before removing the hook, I used to lose some big fish by not taking that approach, nice fish by the way.
haha yes! learned this the hard way in the past as well. Thanks!
I enjoy your videos and how you show the under water action and explain how each fish eats
Thanks, thats exactly what helps me as well, once you start seeing how they attack the bait you get a better visualization when you feel the bites on the rod
