- I always try to do one offshore trip in late November as the water cools inshore and the fish start moving deeper. This year, my wife and I drove out to Montauk NY in the early hours of the morning on black Friday and boarded the Viking Starship. The wind was a little stiff, and the temps were in the low 40's but the crowd was light and the bite was somewhat steady so we had a good time. First wreck they anchored on was actually a dud, no keeper seabass for anyone, so they moved after only 10 min. which was definitely the right call because the next wreck was pretty lively...

Awesome, thank you for letting me know! I also like using metal jigs at times for them, maybe when the water is murkier that flash really helps get their attention and when its a little clearer you can use soft plastics, at least thats the way I think about it but many times they'll hit anything if they are in the feeding mood, haha

Hey Gio! I appreciate you checking in, didn’t get to do much of that kind of stuff this winter, just a little kayak motor upgrade but even that is still in the works. Also in the process of moving houses (same general area) right now so I may be a tad late to the spring start. Hey Andrew, yeah I really enjoyed this trip, the crew and captain def know what theyr doing and they put us on some nice fish! I had a great time fishing next to Rolando, I could tell he's a great guy and father just from the short conversations we had. Def looking forward to another trip with them. You mentioned offshore oilfish trips?! I thought those were inedible?
@@PeterRanieriII lol im glad you had a great time! and on the tile front they are in my opinion and to most of the crew one of our favorite fishes to eat (amazing table fare!!!) little butter in a pan with the tile take it off put some salt and pep and put on a plate with steamed veggies and wild rice yummy! 😋 so definitely come out you won't be disappointed!!

I'll tell you the Viking is a good party boat I used to go on that boat for cod fish and these guys know what they're doing I believe that's one of the best boats Montauk has
its crazy how many boats they have too
@@PeterRanieriII yeah they do have a lot of boats out of Montauk but my favorite one is the Vikings they know where all the spots are you know what I mean especially when it comes to codfish
We usually do 1 Montauk/Block island November trip, on the My Joyce. Absolutely awesome trip.
I gotta check that boat out, nice that really is my favorite time of year to fish over there too!

usually it is, but sometimes when the boat is bigger and the piece is small the boat may be anchored right over it and then the sides could be just as good

I was skeptical about the a "party boat" clip. WRONG. That was a great trip. A lot of catching..... Sure, the target species was shy. But the overall rod bending was consistent.
The wifeee was into it too. I thought she was hiding from the cold. But I think I was mistaken. I think her early absences was when she was on the sunny and windy side.

LOL party boat trips can be very hit or miss but to me if your not getting tangled too often its usually a good trip. Agreed, the bites were consistent, just not too many blackfish but thats ok I really wanted more seabass anyways. Yeah she was so tired, we both were running on like 2 hours of sleep for the past 2 nights...fishing prevents me from sleeping so I was able to stay awake but she was lulled to sleep on that cot with the rolling waves, lol
around here when they honk we yell LET UM GO BOYS!!!
I went out to R.I. last weekend hard bait only open boat 24"SB/9lb togs was common 14lb tog pool winner, no scups around.

it is very funny ( ironic?) that you are / were able to kill the Blackfish in both of the places that you fish in the Sound
of course if they found the Blackfish then it could have been the most awesome, with fish larger than what you get

Steve! They sure did. Yeah I think the deep water blackfish is a whole other fishery, the fish seem to big bigger on average but less prevalent. There are endless spots to fish out there too so I think they probably move around the boulders a bit more? In the shallow areas of the sound there are just so many more smaller blackfish and I think bc of so much more competition the bite is much more aggressive.
The cost was $150 per person. It was a weekday price, the weekend is a little more. Its not bad, much more affordable than a charter, and we did bring home a good amount of fish. Maybe 10 fish or so of 2lbs of meat on average so thats like 20lbs of meat at $15/lb. yeah that makes sense, then we would've made our money back. LOL thats actually really good when I think about it, plus its a lot of fun and you do eat super fresh that first night!

one year I went out to Montauk and went on the Viking starship with brother George mating on a 24hr Nantucket wreck trip, I will never forget the experience the ocean was like glass, tons of Cod and Hake@@PeterRanieriII

Hey Gio, lol the swim shad def got bigger fish but everyone was getting seabass on the clam. I think the Viking is pretty good for winter cod from what I've heard...I know miss Montauk also does winter cod trips as I had planned one last year but it got cancelled due to weather. Thats the only issue, so many of the trips get cancelled its hard to make it out unless you have a flexible schedule. Hope to hear back from this trip if you make it out!
If you’re in western long island go on the captain Lou. I got sick on the last trip but the captain crushes it
@@anon-e-mouse988 they go really far offshore right? I’ve done a late December trip with them a few years back but I just remember it taking a very long time to get to the wreck, not sure they do cod only trips in January
You should try heading out on the Miss Montauk next time. Much cleaner and well kept boat!!
I did the same type of trip with my dad in 2020 on the miss montauk. I love that boat, think it’s my favorite. Did a trip for fluke too that same year. I just wanted to try this one out.

@@lukegavigan5212 both trips were great, I think I prefer that boat actually, the best one I've done so far. I like that they did more drifting for sea bass although that could just be weather-dependent.
Only one month left for tog and sea bass. While cod runs all winter, the weather has been less than favorable two years in a row. I personally don't really go out past Thanksgiving.
I'm with ya Josh, I also dont really fish from December to March, just too cold and too many other things I have to do. But you certainly can get them if the weather is favorable like you said. Hope you had an enjoyable 2023 season man 🤙

Usually the first fish of the drop are the biggest. Especially while jigging.
Yep, it’s true. Ive noticed that as well. Even on smaller pieces same thing happens, the big ones typically outcompete the small ones to the bait/lure first

Thats what I was semi-hoping for too, I figured anything decent sized above the wreck might take a jab at that lure.

@@PeterRanieriII well every end of November or like beginning of December I always catch my three trout either it's rainbow brook or brown one fish got to be 13 inches the other two could be any size under 13 inches if it's decent and not that cold out let's say like in the forties I'm definitely going every time I go there I got my three trout when I go home and a ticket of catching them or wax worms
Girl right after my own heart. What dictated you using the spining versus casting reel.
Spinning setup for the lighter weight lure up to 3oz, casting for the heavier weight, (used 8oz in this trip). I just prefer spinning in shallower water and conventional (baitcasting) in deeper water too.

nice! and thank you - i hope you have a great trip when you go, that jig head is called a squid jig head, i believe i left a link in the description but they arent cheap. I would look around at different tackle stores and you may even find similar ones in the clearance area if your lucky.

I have but only a handful of times, out of Sarasota we went out very far for Red Grouper and your typical bottom dwellers like mangos. black sea bass are super similar to red grouper
are those the same black sea bass they catch in the Chesapeake Bay (or used to). In the 80's my step-dad used to take me on party boats in the Bay and we caught Spots and Black Bass. I now fish out of Pensacola/Orange Beach.@@PeterRanieriII

Thanks! I try to, yes. Small metal jigs work great on porgy party boats and same with gulp. Paddle tails like this on fluke boats…But conditions will dictate if it’s possible with a smaller weight, many times it’s not possible

Thanks Kristen! You know it! 🙏 we have a healthy looking freezer this winter. So I actually use an old surf rod piece that was a 4 piece rod and one of the pieces fits nicely in the rod holder (with a little help of keeping it tight) and then I have a gopro mount on the top of that piece. Hey! great hearing from ya man, that is a pretty sweet deal! basically half off! I mean I hear a lot of great things about them, very stable and roomy. The weight may be a little heavy with gear over sand beaches and car topping but I think you could manage. I would use it a few times as you normally would and then see first if its too big or too heavy. Then at least you'll have a starting point to where where to look from there

Thanks. Great question and your suspicions are correct it’s not easy to cast with the bulky index finger. I mean you can get away with it but you just have to adjust your pace at which you do everything if you know what I mean. Def possible but not ideal

he was putting the fish straight in the cooler so I just put them in too. But your right, it makes such a difference to bleed then ice, I still dont understand why people dont take the extra 15 seconds to do it

In traditional Chinese cuisine (and surrounding eastern asia countries except Japan), by the definition of freshness for fish, it should be kept intact after capturing. Bleeding seems making fish less fresh. Additional, fish are usually fully cooked for the benefit of sanitation. fish blood is not an issue for taste after cooking. I never know bleeding fish until coming to US, and I'm still learning how to make raw fish fillet in American way.
May I know where you usually buy green crabs? I live closed to your fishing locations but not familiar with nearby tackle shops. Thank you!
Thanks! I think its probably true that they can stay fresh if they stay alive and you dont bleed them but I've heard that fish will release hormones when they are stressed that can affect the meat during storage and make it go bad faster. I just like to dispatch them asap and get the blood out and then put on ice soon after, and putting on ice soon after is the key!
I typically get them at Duffy's by the quarter bushel

@@trevorshao yeah there’s a thin membrane behind the gills that if you pop it they’ll bleed out quick
