Greetings from Missouri! I think I might mount mine on the bow now on my Compass. I’ve been back and forth looking for mounting ideas. I’m definitely going to use some of your ideas. Great content and God Bless your family and you brother!
Awesome man, yeah I like both the bow and stern locations for different conditions. Let me know what you decide to do, it’s a fair amount of work to get that motor up and going but so far worth it to me. Glad to hear the videos helped you in some way!
love this idea! I researched the auto boat adapter before doing this, it had just came out. But i figured at $650 + $250 for the trolling motor and then building a custom mount for the motor would bring me into about $1000-$1200 and there just wasnt enough data out there on other people who had success with the autoboat except for the kayakDIY guy so I figured it was worth the couple extra hundred bucks to just do the motorguide. But please let me know if you do the auto boat with success, it looks awesome!
@@PeterRanieriII will do, i would also do the motorguide but my main issue is the weight of it so I am opting for the autoboat for now. I can always upgrade so its not a huge deal.
@@Waterboy516 I like Berkeley x9 the best right now and power pro super slick 8 would be my 2nd favorite. In general I like the smooth feeling braids not just for casting but the sound is greatly reduced through the guides. On my underwater camera I have like a 40lb heavy duty 4 strand braid and I can hear the braid rubbing the guides at the bait. Not sure if it spooks fish but I’d rather be as silent as possible
Awesome thank you. Im going to get a trolling motor im not sure if I should get the water snake or splurge on the xi3. What are your thoughts on the water snake and can you make a video on it?
@@Waterboy516 i would start with the watersnake, I love that thing, still use it just as much. check out the hobie mod playlist, I have the rod holder mount video in there for it. ua-cam.com/play/PLZsVnWkyzKlnj8VwDjXEqIz7KCZxgM5_o.html you get that watersnake for $170 + a 100ah LiPO4 battery for $200 and your good to go under $400
Pete, how has the xi3 been holding up? Overall it seems like a good motor but some complain that it sometimes has a mind of its own. Stops on occasion or can't get out of anchor mode without rebooting, for instance. Just want to check with you before deciding on Motorguide vs Minn Kota for my Outback. Thanks!
So far its holding up really well. I have not had any issues with it starting or stopping by itself. Im sure minn kota is a great motor as well though I don't think they have a shorter shaft model. pretty sure the shortest is 54in with spot lock which is going to be too long for a kayak. Let me know which direction you go!
@@PeterRanieriII I bow mounted an Xi3 on my Outback last week. Working great so far. The added weight caused me to insert scupper plugs because so much water entering by seat at higher speeds. The biggest complaint so far is to hold on tight when starting pinpoint gps ("spotlock") because the unit whips you around forcefully in different directions. They need a fix for that, because it could capsize you in rougher seas. Also, I learned the hard way not to get the cord tangled around the motor wires, otherwise you can't pull the motor up. It tends to steer to the right so you have to straighten out every few minutes of travel. Overall I still pedal a lot so I like the ability to use my mirage drive and have the motor ready if/when needed to fight current and spotlock.
@@cn65666 yea i noticed the bubbles coming up from scuppers a bit more on high speeds as well, and yes thats exactly my initial concern as well about the anchor lock/spot lock it def whips you good initially if your headed opposite in where it wants to lock you. So ive noticed if you kind of allow yourself to naturally drift for a second before hitting it its a bit calmer of a reaction and you;ll also just get used to it if you know to anticipate i think...but yeah thats awesome Im glad to hear its working out in general for you so far! I really like it for certain types of fishing, not all the time but many times it makes fishing a whole lot easier in the current and wind
I think my opinion is a bit bias since I've only ever owned a compass and a passport but I love my compass. Without question it has been the single best purchase I ever made in terms of fishing gear. The opportunities that opened up were more than I even imagined, and I genuinely love fishing from a kayak with pedals. Would I also love fishing from an outback or old town model? probably yes. If you like to do mods yourself though and transport ease is important to you, compass is hard to beat
I have both a 2019 Outback and 2022 Compass. They are very comparable performance wise but the Compass is about 30# lighter fully rigged. The Outback handles rough water better. My two cents.

What a great job 😊
Excellent
TKS!!! Your installation is really cool!! Today I was thinking how I would put my Minn Kota on my Compass... you gave me an idea 💡👍🏻👍🏻
Happy to hear you got something out of it!
Another nice fabrication job Pete!
Good idea with the plastic plugs!
Maybe not soon, but a motor is in my future.
Gonna try this with an auto-boat adapter and a smaller motor on my compass. But great idea!

Good job Peter
Nice addition
Thanks 👍
Just in time for TOG !
ohhh yeah, not too far away cant wait
Pete when I hook up with a fish I disengage motor ..fight fish with peddles/ rudder..feel I have more control
100% agree! I have to start thinking to do that, I really dont like being stuck while fighting a fish
Hey what is your favorite braid? I remember you did a ton of testing. I just bought a 4k diawa saltiest. Probably going to put 30 lb

Quick real question, how satisfied you are with compass, planning to buy a compass. It’s really helpful when a professional like you recommend a kayak
