Hey Peter caught my first keeper Seabass just recently, cut the stomach open and found a belly full of crabs. Just FYI and greetings from Gio Western Long Island Sound.
Congrats Gio! Good to know about the crabs and that there’s keepers out there if you know where to look. Just waiting for the right weather to get after them..🤙
You are too kind Dan, just wish the footage came out a little better but yeah that was a fun trip, never got into fluke like that before near me, it was awesome! hope your getting out and finding some fish too!
Hey so 2 weeks ago my friend and wanted to catch bass at night, so we drove around on his boat going to peoples dock lights. You know the ones thay are green and in the water. Well we spot locked right next to it watching the bait and every few minutes we would see fluke swim back and forth over the light eating spearing and whatever bait fish that was moving. Tiny bunker. I always thought fluke were lazy and waited for their food but this made me realize thats not the case at all. I was also watching them drift and go with the tide almost few times so fluke definitely move around more than what people think
very interesting observation, that is pretty cool to see! those green lights will attract all sorts of fish, I love watching fish eat bait, lol could do that all day/night. I completely agree though the fluke move much more than people realize. If their food source is on the move they will follow it around!
Hey Peter, have you considered making an informational video speaking about safety regarding weather conditions? When you would or wouldn’t go out related to wind, swells, period etc. I have been dedicated to the surf for 3 years now and am heavily considering buying my first kayak (OT PDL 120). I would as well be fishing Western sound/bays and Harbors. I have done a ton of research but still feel hesitant.
Mike that’s an excellent idea. I will try to put together something. To make kayaking trips safe and enjoyable you do almost need to study the wind/weather almost as much as you study the fishing spot you want to fish itself.
Great content. Love how you go into detail as you are fishing, especially the different depths you are at. I feel a lot of guys talk about everything but how deep they are fishing. Subbed
Thanks Paul, good to know they are out by you as well. Oh yea, that morning only the western region was fishable - i saw 15-20mph even in the morning that day by you
I really wasnt sure it was going to be calm enough in that early morning but it looked good when I woke up 3:30am lol so I went for it. Forecast been all over lately - you really have to decide that morning/night before - but glad i went for it on this one, thanks!
Hello Peter ! Doug P. from Mamaroneck Harbor again. Hope you had a great weekend my friend. I am thinking about going EAST tomorrow mid morning to the sea bass grounds you were on with your wife a week or more ago. You said between Port Jeff and Mattituck. Gonna be a hike but think I should give it a try if you recommend. If I do, any tips for possibly getting a keeper Sea Bass ? Try the Jig Worms ? Gulp ? Maybe something else as well? Depth? Any help would be much appreciated. Are you going to be out there tomorrow ? All the best my friend and tight lines ! Doug P.
Hey Doug, windy weekend didnt get out really but thats ok :) yea i say go for if you have the time/opportunity! Im a weekend warrior unfortunately so typcially sat and sun are the only days I gotta make soemthing happen but you def should try if you have large enough boat. Tomrw seems a bit windy out of the north for a small craft, tuesday def looks better. I would just focus on getting right over the boulders for those big sea bass and try to stay away from obvious places. many of the unmarked boulders can be found by searching around marked ones. 35'-65' is where I'd look
@@PeterRanieriII Many thanks for taking the time to get back to me above Peter. You were right, big winds out of the North so I stayed in the area where you have fished with FishingAccomplished - Rye area. Caught a 14" Tog (clams), then a massive Porgy by Little Captain's Isl. (Greenwich, also clams + squid), then caught a small Fluke by Captains Isl. drifting soft plastic. Very slow overall however. Went back to Rye and marked a massive school of Stripers by Playland. They hit a small live Porgy I kept from earlier. Sucked it down within 5 secs. but pulled the hook. Cut up my big Porgy that was on ice but they wouldn't hit the chunks. Also, the wouldn't hit diff. sized soft plastics either, even with the Dr. Juice scent, crazy ! Weird Striper bite this season ! I still hope to get out East for the Sea Bass one of these days. Doug P. from Mam'k Harbor
Pete a suggestion buy some cheap cotton brown garden gloves much easier to handle fish when you bring them on board even when the gloves are wet..Nice fluke though
i didn't go out on sunday because i thought it was going to be too windy where you were fishing. i was there friday and saturday and had 3 keepers both days
Yoo Miles! you got 3 keepers on both days?! thats awesome, good to know they've been here for a little bit already. I wanted to go saturday it seemed much much on the forecast but I only had sunday to go so I made it work, thankfully the wind held back until the afternoon but yeah the forecast was iffy, i was watching it very closely
@@PeterRanieriII oh yea the fluke are absolutely chomping on that shoal. the celtic quest has been going there too and limiting out. it was easiest to catch them in the morning when i could see the sand eels on the surface, and then closer to the afternoon i would follow the blues/stripers on the shoal and jig under where they were feeding and i was getting hammered. i had 2 keepers within 15 seconds of dropping underneath the blues on friday. also noticed not many fluke past 27 ish feet, anything shallower was quick action
Nice trip out there! Generally how deep would you go to target sea bass? There are a few spots I'm looking at in the 30-50 range but not sure if that is deep enough.
Thanks Steve, did you get out this past weekend over by you? I tend to favor the deeper stuff in the western sound because I usually struggle to find keepers in the shallower stuff but you can totally get them in the 30-50 range. I just think typically you have better chance of keepers in the 50-80 range but sometimes its dead out in that zone, like this day, lol
@@PeterRanieriII I went out on Wednesday to the Peacock Point area and found some good porgy action near shore, surprisingly. I was going to go out on Sunday but I didn't think the weather would be cooperating so I took it off. I am salty that I did though, it looked lovely. Yeah, that is what I thought. There are a few spots around the outer edges of Matinecock in the 40-50 range I am going to be trying early Thursday morning since I can't stay out too long.
So far, tons of short sea bass in the week since it opened. The inshore grounds have seen lots of short fluke but few keepers. The Block Island grounds have seen similar reports. Ever since the 28-31 slot limit went into effect, a lot of the boats don't bother with stripers anymore.
Hey Josh, thanks for the reports, seems its been a slow start in many places then. its very hard to get a slot striper with that range, really seems stripers will be catch and release only soon
lol not exactly like a spanish war/cargo ship but def more modern day ships like barges and such. Almost positive the 2 wrecks I tried are steel barges that sank around 50 years ago or so

This definitely feels like the year of the sandeel. Bunker pods moved in by us and I feel like there hasn't been much on them. Yet.
agreed. I looked for bunker pods this day too man but didnt see any. Its def going to be interesting how the rest of the summer plays out.

Nice job, couple nice fluke. Same by me, lots of shorts with a couple good ones mixed in. Wanted to out for opener but too windy out this way
