Porgy and Atlantic Mackerel in the Sound! (kayak fishing CCC)

- Memorial Day Weekend is usually right around the time when the fishing starts to really heat up in my area. In order to avoid the heat and heavy boat traffic, I got on and off the water pretty early and was rewarded with glassy calm conditions and some pretty good fishing action.

That Porgie been practicing the kayak bounce escape for a long time. Perfectly done!
🤣it was a flawless escape
Beautiful family , thanks for sharing with us all ..
Next to sardines, mackerel is high in omega 3's. Healthy catch Pete. Eat em up. Thanks for report. No Porgy yet lower sound. Macks usually dont venture this far but hope they do. In the 70s they were a regular. Was a very popular party boat fish back then. People would load up garbage pails full.
thanks Joe, and thats good to know about them being healthy, makes me want to keep them again and I think I would. Interesting that you havent seen the porgys yet over there either...yea maybe the'll make their way to you soon. I never knew that these mackerel once were a regular visitor to our water - thanks for sharing!
Are those called Spanish mackerel ?@@PeterRanieriII
@fishingbear69 these ones are atlantic mackerel, different than spanish mackerel
I'm headed out tomorrow for scup. I love some fried scup with some salad. It's summertime baby!
nice, Its summertime is right! haha never tried it in a salad but that sound pretty good actually, thanks for the reccommend. I see your starting to get fluke up there from your latest vid, but they sill filling in
Thank you for making me smile so much while you were catching those porgies on the Crappie jigs.
nice bro big porgy's , can't wait till they get to here
thanks, yeah I think they will be over your way very soon
@@PeterRanieriII great eating 🙌. Catch them up bro 🙌🎣
You’ve earned a sub. This vid was so much fun. I caught a Mack up on the north shore a week ago - was surprised and it was delicious.
thank you for that, its great to hear they have made a nice showing this year, love seeing new stuff out there!
Nice video! Thank you for sharing. Miss the porgy fishing in the sound.
Glad you enjoyed it, its a great fishery, one that I am very thankful for
Peter !
You brought them home AND cooked them. Nice work and nice family.... My crystal ball sees a dusty kayak and skiff with children catching porgies in the near future.....
I tapped the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters.
Francus, i think you will once again be correct. my kayak days could be numbered as the kids get older and want to go on a boat with me. thanks for feeding the algorithm as i feed my little monsters as well, haha you da best
Great session Peter, well done. smoked mackerel is also really nice, worth a try if you land a few more.
thanks! I'm totally going to try and smoke them if I catch them again, great advice!
I have to get out and get some mackerel. They have eluded me in the past. Last year when I was waiting for the Albies to make there rounds at the south end of fisher island. I used a white crappie jig to see how big a Porgy I could get on those little hooks. It was a blast.
Haha I hope you find them this year, seems theyll have to eventually leave the sound and head back east. That’s exactly what my only concern was are those tiny little hooks meant for crappie on these jigs but surprisingly they held up better than I expected. Didn’t break any at all and you’re right it’s an absolute blast!
Mackerel and Porgys on Ultralight tackle is the best. Smoked Macks are great with beer and cheddar !! Light jigs with small plastics have been my go to bait and you can tip it with cut bait if you like.
Thanks for the tips! i really want to try and smoke the next one
Real nice action Peter good job
thanks Mario, hope you had a good weekend as well
Great trip! I wasn't able to get out this past weekend, but I'll be hitting up a few of my normal fluke haunts in Hempstead harbor to see if they are there.
thank you Steve, I'll be over that way soon, if the stripers dont show here soon I'll try over there. Lots of life and bait around, hope you find a few!
@@PeterRanieriII there has been something all over HH eating on top water. I believe it is macks but haven't been able to confirm. Look forward to seeing you out there.
Its always thrilling and a learning experience seeing your videos ,, what water depth wer you in with crappie jig and the rubber worm , and if its ok to ask would you have a video carching porgies on the squidtrex or the crank a crab lures ? Thanks stay blessed.
Thanks, I think I was in around 20' for the most part, maybe a little deeper towards the end of the trip like 25-30' or so. That squidtrex looks pretty cool, im sure it would catch big porgys but they would also like bite the tentacles off and those lures are not cheap. I've always wanted to give the crank a crab a try for porgy, I think it would work well, great ideas!
@PeterRanieriII thanks Peter for the feed back ,appreciate that.
I remember a trip a few years ago when we were catching mackerel nonstop. We kept them because it was rainy and nothing else was biting.
My Plymouth trip was a bust. Nothing was biting. I only counted about ten haddock all day, and no reds. I might do a fluke trip on Saturday. The fluke bite has been fair to good so far.
thanks for stopping by and the update Josh - hope you get on some fluke, its been slow around me for them. how did you cook the mackerel back then?
Caught some big Mack’s from the surf on north shore couple days ago! They taste very good!
I actually saw your video this morning Ryan, very nice! From shore is much harder too - congrats! I think I recognize the area you were fishing, its so nice out there
So many Porgies! What a great session Peter! How many Porgies can one keep per regulations? They're cool fish, unfortunately we don't have them up here in Canada. Glad your Macks tasted good, there's tons of those around here lol. Dinner looked awesome!
thank you! the limit per day is actually 30 fish lol which is kinda crazy. the porgies are a fun fish man, dont get too big but the fight great - cool to know you see lots mackerel where you are, do you ever see cod where you are or they are deeper?
@@PeterRanieriII 30 fish holy moly! That's awesome! Yeah it's all deep sea fishing for here haha. There is no fishery to retain any. Must all be released unless you have a specialized license
Good job Peter
nice video - i love mackerel; they are delicious
Im also impressed with the crappie jigs , if its ok to ask have you tried with the 1/8 or the 1/4 oz marabou crappie jigs ?
im really not sure what the weight is on the this particular jig but I think its 1/8oz. I hadn't tried it before this outing but always thought about it, was just worried about the tiny hooks so thats where the ultralight rod helps I think absorb the head shakes from the porgy
@PeterRanieriII thanks Peter, please let me know for sure , wen you get the chance, maestro if there 1/8 or 1/4 , thanks.
@PeterRanieriII thanks Peter for the pointers we are learning from you..✌🏼
Hey Peter, how are you getting that boulder overlay? I have a 74sv but have to mess around with it as I'm still new to this fishfinder. Thanks
hey man, its the navionics vision+ chip that I had to buy. its pretty much the same relief shading as the navionics app but I was just was getting annoyed having to constantly look at my phone while out there and it would get wet.
@@PeterRanieriII appreciate the response Peter!
Macks are super underrated. Most people let them die in a cooler. A tiny bit of care and prep and it can be super good.
I agree, and it’s true the care of the fish is very important
Hey Peter, nice session out there. Why don’t you have your new motor?
Thanks Tony, this trip required me to haul the kayak over land as I transitioned from the bay to the sound and then back to the bay at the end so I figured it would just be easier to take the lighter motor. And also the wind and currents were low on this day so I didn’t see much need for the “spot lock” feature
Hey man I have been watching your videos a lot recently and I noticed that when you catch a porgy and your keeping him it looks like u reach into his gills and do something to kill it. I am wondering what do you do because i am heading up soon and i never know how to properly kill them. Thanks
in this video around the 5:50 mark i show it clearer: ua-cam.com/video/7EeGt9kMVLg/v-deo.html
@@PeterRanieriII Thank you so much.
Seems like everything is coming to life. I dunno if they ever hit your rudder, but the bass pretty frequently strike it when I travel at night. It'll wake you up quick
its coming alive for sure Bob! I wish I couldve shown on camera all the small baitfish in the shallows but the glare was too much, they were everywhere, looked almost like sardines I had never seen them before, lots of cool stuff happening right now man. Thats crazy about the bass hitting the rudder never happened to me me yet lol but makes sense. Its kinda odd when we spook them like that I really wonder what theyr doing bc it doesnt seem they are in the feeding mood most times when they are just chillin at the surface like that
@@PeterRanieriII I'd love to know why they sit on the surface early morning like that too. They seem to do it every morning
A couple of mackerel were caught in south jersey from the surf this year. Rare catch there
Ha, I eat all the ends of the bread also!
wow whats going on with the macks all over theplace!? haha im glad im not alone on the bread thing, just no one else in the fam will eat them so its up to me!
@@PeterRanieriII lol same here no one else eats them in my house either
Mackerel try boiling with bay leaf salt & pepper. Once skin begins to peel, quarter flesh and serve with shallots, olive oil and vinegar and fresh parsley. Makes a great salad with loaf of bread!
Interesting recipe here, going to have to try this 👍 thank you
Ct Side last weekend water temps 59..slow fishing
oh wow thats still kinda chilly, thanks for the report though, maybe this upcoming weekend it should be warmer
Peter...
I think you'll like this clip because it's close (enough) to your backyard. Look up "Can a billion oysters save NYC".... It's about 10 minutes long. Hope you enjoy.
wow what a recommendation, that was an awesome video. Theres a lot of info in there I never knew. So cool how the oyster is essentially the mangrove equivalent in the south east where it provides habitat for juvenile species, and storm erosion. I really hope it works out and the water continues to get cleaner up here because it definitely seems that at least part of the work that has been done to clean up NY waters is working...
@PeterRanieriII
I'm glad you liked it. The Great South Bay needs it the most.....
In North Florida, we have oysters and no mangroves trees. The problem is this....
Oysters can not live below or above the tide lines like a clam. They must have both air and submersion. This leaves them completely vulnerable to floating oil from street run-off. I don't have a solution. Cars without oil, brake dusts, tire wear, etc. is not an option..... Throw in pesticides, fertilizers, paint, plastics, etc.... The oysters have heavy obstacles to overcome.
@@francus7227 oh dang I didn't know you dont have the mangroves in the north part, are you above st augustine? i see the issue though, and i dont have a solution either but I do think the main root of the issue is the runoff. when it rains all the pollution on the roads gets dumped into the waterway very quickly. I've heard people saying stuff like washing your car more frequently can actually help so that its relatively clean when it rains thereby making it a less all at once occurance. but yeah we need to figure out the runoff
@PeterRanieriII
Yes, Jacksonville. Mangroves don't start until Coco Beach....
The car wash makes sense. They use Dawn soap during oil spill cleanup....
I'm sure boat motors contribute, too. But not like street run off.
Why is your IG private ?
i guess I should've made a new one strictly for my fishing posts but yeah its mostly just pics of my kids, and a little fishing...I think you guys would find it boring for the most part
sandeels in stomach, follow those schools and find excellent fluke fisihng in the coming weeks
Makes sense! if they weren't so fast I totally would, lol good to know
