  • It was a rather slow morning except for this fish. We bounced around some rocky bottom in the western sound but didnt find much. Some bunker were around at the surface but after casting around didnt work, I just dropped down the 5.5 green elias shad and slowly jigged near the bottom.

      Thanks, sure that's a great suggestion. I'll do my best to show the FF screen as much as I can and remember. I think it can vary depending on the area you fish but in general I'm looking for bottom changes in depth and looking for marks around those.

    Peter,
    Before I tap the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters, I have a concern. So.... here's my keyboard coaching.
    I've watched a hundred of your clips. My eyes immediately noticed a change. You are rocking side to side more than previously. You're in calm waters in this clip. But that isn't always the case. The trolling motor has raised your center of gravity. My suggestion? Since you are never in super shallow water, I would keep the motor as low in the water as possible to help lower your center of gravity and minimiz rocking. Also.... be very careful for a fish running across your bow. If your line gets into that prop without cutting the line, it will wind the line all the way, lock your motor up and you won't be able to unwind it until you're back on land.
    Be careful out there until you get really comfortable with this new setup.
    Nice fish.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 місяці тому

      Francus you really have an astute eye for detail. You are 100% correct that this motor is throwing off the balance a bit. Especially when I hit the spot lock and the fish started running towards the motor and the motor correcting itself to go in the opposite direction quickly it threw me off a bit there. So you are right there is def some getting used to this thing and I dont like it in the bow when im fighting a bigger fish. Im going to lower the shaft a bit to help with the balance but Im realizing now that it will be more in the way if a fish decides to swim across the bow. And your right if the motor is on spot lock the prop is spinning and if i tangle in that with a fish then im toast. yikes this is a lot to think about, I appreciate the reality check!

    • @francus7227
      @francus7227 3 місяці тому

      My prediction.... That trolling motor will be sold, and you're going back to your armpit troller.
      Good luck and be SAFE.
      Last tip/question. Have you ever watched clips on "deep water kayak reentry?" There's a simple technique. It might be a good idea to study up. My buddy tipped. Good luck he was with me or he'd still be out there. I coached him back on.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 місяці тому

      @@francus7227 I have a video on my channel of doing a re-entry (of course in water over my head). Its def something everyone that kayaks must attempt. I didn't struggle too much but I learned a lot, especially with regards to the floatation the wheels in the back provide and the amount of gear that gets in the way while attempting to jump back on. which of course this motor only complicates even more...but I agree i think this motor will have a time and a place but it may not end up being what I take out the most often.

    Nice catch, Peter. I bet you would get a slot size stripper if using a smaller lure 😆.
    Joke aside, a lot of strip bass sold in grocery stores are not within slot size. I am always wondering whether commercial fishing are regulated with far loosen standard or they are caught out of NY jurisdiction.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 місяці тому +2

      yooo! haha , its possible there were smaller fish closer to the surface too...i think the commercial harvest is much less stringent than recreational. looks like according to the NYDEC website they can be 26"-38" ? dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/saltwater-fishing/commercial/harvest-limits

      @PeterRanieriII  3 місяці тому +1

      thanks Paul, not really. We saw a few marks higher in the water column but I didn't really see anything on the bottom. My guess this fish was staging practically on the bottom behind a rock or something and didnt show on the sonar

    Hi. Apologies if I missed it somewhere - trolling motor mount stern or bow? Comments?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  3 місяці тому +1

      I put a mount on both stern and bow. Still testing it out both places for different scenarios. I like the stern for anchoring in current so far and the bow for more wind but the bow gets more in the way. I think the stern location is a little faster too...

  • @user-hh5vu2zv8b

    How did you mount your trolling motor on the bow? I have a compass as well and have been scratching my head on how to do this.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому

      I have the “how to” video coming soon, editing it right now. Was not easy, I essentially made something similar to a PA bow mount using 1” cutting board as the material but carving the support pieces around that curve was so time consuming. You’ll see soon but I couldn’t think of any other way lol
