    Nice. Been fishing western Long Island sound from like city island to east river and porgy fishing has been tough ! Short fluke and sea bass and lots of spot. I wish I was as patient as you putting in all that time paid off !

      ohh yeah porgy fishing in the far western sound has been very tough, this is the slowest I've seen it for porgy since I started fishing these waters in 2019. they didn't seem to swim into the bays in may
      either which was strange. I guess we gotta take what we can get, heard the spot taste great but they are a small fish. Yeah just kept working areas to the east as it seems to be better the more east you go in general

    Nice job! Yeah the bays in longbeach/ jones beach have been tuff for fishing all short fluke but lots of them.

      So I took the rod holder out. I used the pre existing holes and mounted a 1” thick cutting board to the kayak.
      Used all stainless steel bolts/nuts/washers.
      The old town kayaks have an access panel under the seat so im able to use bolts.
      I used a rubber gasket under it to make it water resistant.

    The fluke is definitely slowing down, which is to be expected this late in the season. But there is no shortage of sea bass to be had. In another two or three weeks, the head boat switches over to cod trips. There have even been a couple cod showing up around Block Island, though the season doesn't open until mid-September.

    • @PeterRanieriII

      thanks for the report as always Josh, is the cod regulation for gulf of maine or by state for you?

    You are not worried that hanging fish on a stringer over the side of the boat wont bring a shark your way? Sorry if this is an ignorant question.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому

      Its a legit question, no worries. The western Long Island Sound where Im fishing is a unique place that is very much sheltered from the open ocean so we really don't get too many sharks. Its not unheard of, sometimes in September some brown sharks make it in but likely a seal steeling the fish off the stringer is more likely. And its a little misleading but the fish is usually only on that stringer for 5min until they fully bleed out then i transfer to the cooler.

    Incredible fluke! Been a few weeks since I have been out since I had to do a repair on the kayak. How are you able to determine what you are looking at on the finder? Stripers/blues are a bit more obvious, but anything on the bottom?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому +1

      thanks steve this fish really did get my hyped, lol. What happened to your yak? for bottom fishing im looking for clouds of bait mostly. I like to see good relief of the structure and hopefully some clouds or small marks around that structure indicating a likely place for a fluke to be hiding.

      @@PeterRanieriII really great info! Definitely still improving on identifying what I am looking at. My kayak is a rugged inflatable with a motor. Port Jeff-based Sea Eagle. It is made for fishing and can generally handle hooks/external punctures from branches, metal, etc. On my last trip, a porgy hopped off the hook and one of the spikes on its dorsal fins hit at just the right angle with just the right amount of pressure and punctured one of the air bladders that has sidelined me for a bit. It wasn't so bad that I started taking on water, but it definitely made me not want to stay out too long. Fortunately, it came with a repair kit with some of the canvas and epoxy glue so it is repaired now. I should be getting out sometime this week. I was also considering entering the bluefish tourney this weekend since they have been around from what I hear.

      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому

      @@steverazzano oh dang you have a sea eagle?! I've been very curious about those but yeah the inflatable thing had me slightly concerned. hawaaiin dan seems to do great with them, def looks like you can get more range with somethign like that. Well glad you got it fixed though and yeah ill prob join the bluefish tourney, its fun just to get the shirt and have that small chance at a nice payout. Almost always though the big one comes from near the gut/race

    I do notice that when it's an overcast day, the fluke doesn't bite as good, like your video, the first part of your video until the sun comes out and the bite got better.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому +1

      thats a great point, I think your right. The best conditions for fluke IMO are a sunny day with clear water and a ramping up tide or ramping down tide.

  • @cloutmaster965
    @cloutmaster965 2 місяці тому

    hows the balance feel with the xi3? You thinking of getting a smaller motor or is it no issue?

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому

      its a great question. When I have the cooler and battery in the back it balances fine but I will say that it seems to take on a bit more waves over the bow when its a little choppy. Thats why I included that little part in the video showing me sponge out some water. I usually dont have to do that mid trip. So I def still like this motor, I'm just learning the limits still. In the stern, I have had no issues. I do have a smaller motor already (the watersnake) so its nice to go back and forth depending on the conditions, transport, and type of fishing im doing

    • @cloutmaster965
      @cloutmaster965 2 місяці тому

      @@PeterRanieriII yeah I am currently buying the parts for mounting a newport kayak series and autoboat since the newport is only 21lbs and the xi3 is 41. When it’s all said and done hopefully I can update you regarding how it is on the compass. But great job being the first to do it on a compass and post about it!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому

      @@cloutmaster965 please tell me how it works out for you! I was so close to trying the auto boat as well but since I couldn’t get it to work on my watersnake already I figured the cost for a new trolling motor plus the auto boat would put me not too far from the xi3 and I just couldn’t find anyone that had some success with it yet. Btw the xi3 with 36” shaft and the quick release mount weighed 30lbs when I weighed it myself.

  • @MarcGaudette-q7g
    @MarcGaudette-q7g 2 місяці тому

    Very nice. Are you happy with the Compass and Hobie as a company? I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a Compass.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  2 місяці тому +1

      hmmm, not really happy with Hobie per say as I havent seen much innovation in a while but with this particular kayak I couldnt be happier. I've done a lot to it since purchasing in 2021 but its held up surprisingly well so I haven't felt the need to search elsewhere yet. If your handy and can manage fixing little things then I think its awesome. The key is just taking care of it, like not dragging it on hard surfaces, rinsing after each use, and keeping out of direct sun. The mirage drive as well is very important to maintain and try not to pedal too hard on it.
