We are Jane and Phil, and in 2023 we bought a long-abandoned small farm on a wooded hillside in central Portugal.
Both of us are in our 60s, into DIY, gardening, cooking, and renovation. We are pushing against the traditional idea of retirement by breathing new life into the farm, to create a sustainable, off-grid, and healthy home. As Brits living part-time in Europe after Brexit, we are adapting to life in Portugal whilst also keeping a home in the UK.
We hope to combine DIY tools, techniques, and experience with local methods and materials alongside technically smart solutions to sit comfortably within the Portuguese architecture and environment.
Join our community of like-minded viewers as we explore self-build techniques, sustainable design, and the joys of creating a new chapter abroad. Perfect for those 50+ who are curious about property restoration, relocation, and living a fulfilling, hands-on lifestyle in a serene, rural setting.

We haven't tried it yet, but have heard great comments about it😋
@@HotkeysPortugal well worth a visit
Another piece of the puzzle is in place and a step further into your future.
Thanks. It's a VERY big puzzle!🧩🤔
That was a lot of work. I'm glad you were able to accomplish it. Great job!
Thanks a lot. You're very kind😀🇵🇹
Looking at your tiling in my opinion the batterns are slightly too far apart the front of the tile should overhang the batten not sit on it😊
Yes, it does a bit wrong and made me think hard about it. I experimented with batten spacing on the bench (earlier episode shows details) and because these tiles are sculpted with like a dropping claw on the lower edge (hard to explain, sorry) to fit a recess in the course below, then this fixes the batten spacing with about 1cm of tolerance. My problem was more with variable widths, but I think I got there in the end.👍🛠️🇵🇹😎
The tiles on the roof seem to be very complicated. How much does one tile cost? Do they have reuse stores in Portugal? Perhaps you can fined, used tiles that match better in the area to fill in on the garage roof.
Thanks Laura, it was ok once I got my thinking cap on. With small numbers we can mix and match from our own or tap into the piles at a neighbour's house - everybody has them somewhere here. For the garage, it will probably be a different solution, maybe the ridged metal sheets like we have on the kitchen.
I have put one of those shelf units together, a nasty fiddly job, but handy..i can see Phil is itching to fix that barn roof. Such potential for storage.
I'm itching to get all our stuff nicely boxed and labelled. So many itches 😂📦📦📦
Estupendo trabajo.
You could also get one of those outdoor roller shades that come out too! Will see you in Feb. Can’t wait ! I’m pining for Poiares
Can't wait!
Very resourceful . Does it matter that the pitch is different as I read pitch should be 14degrees?
It is down at the bare minimum, Sue, but we're keeping everything crossed that it's sufficient for now, until we get our project approved and can do a more long-term solution🤞
Hola & another fab video. More hard work & patience paid off. Love the green bottles Jane, I'm sure you can make something of them. Take care you two lovely people, hugs ♥️
Thanks Patricia. I've seen all sorts of ideas for using the bottles. Just got to decide on one now. Take care and have a lovely week🤗
Your green wine bottles how about a lovely feature wall with the green bottles as they would do pretty green light into a room or on a patio area as a wind block but still get light streaming through, just a thought something I’ve always wanted to do ! Xxx
That sounds a lovely idea, thanks💚
Great progress and a great video!
Thanks a lot😀🇵🇹
Don’t forget to cement the edge Phil 😊
Don't worry, it's on his jobs list. Poised for some more whip-cracking😉
@@HotkeysPortugal hahaaa x
Hi, well done on getting all the mismatched tiles to fit. On the screen it looks like you don't have much of a fall on the roof? I know i had a shed roof that i tiled a few years ago with a shallow pitch and realised when i finished that once the tiles were sitting on the ones below that the top surface was actually level and water would blow back under the tiles if it was windy😂 😂😂
Hi guys, and thanks for the tip. Yes, the pitch is right down at the minimum recommended, but we're hoping it's sufficient for now. We'll be doing a better job once our project is approved. Just been checking out your latest video, and looks like we're shelving buddies! 🏡📦📦
Eucalyptus seems to be a coveted building material for its hardy and long-lasting qualities.
Very true, but I have to learn lots of new techniques to work with round wood rather than the normal milled timber we get in the UK.🛠️😎🇵🇹
There's no bucket or rope to lift the tiles onto the roof... Poor lady doing slave work. Lol😅
Who needs a gym, Luis, when you've got tiles to lift?💪😂

I love how you are making this place better each time we visit! When the exterior of the buildings are painted all will become even more charming! Beautiful land and home place! Thanks!
That's the plan, Tura - we're getting there, but other higher priority jobs keep getting in the way😉
Skid steer and 20 more loads…….a shovel is 🥜 nuts
Nuts it may be, but with a tight budget, and very limited availability of heavy machinery, we're just doing what we can to move the project forwards💪😎
Wow! This forest 🌳 have looks like the south from Chile! There are many forests of foresters
That's fascinating. We've never visited Chile, but would love to one day🌲🌳😀
YOUR recently built shelves NEED some diagonal strips in the back to keep the shape and all going sideways-
I totally agree. Will probably screw them to the wall too once we've decided on the best place for them🪛
Que bom que estão tendo progresso. Dentro do tempo de vocês e do Senhor. Tudo está se organizando. Parabéns . Obrigada por compartilhar esses momentos de evolução. Amando tudo.🙏❤❤
So glad you're enjoying watching! Yes it does take us a long time, but we can see some tiny encouraging signs of progress😀🇵🇹
Oh well done both of you. From what I see of others, it seems to be a common problem. But you did very well. It won't be long before you have the store room kitted out as a lovely space for friends.
Thanks a lot. We're really looking forward to having another more 'respectable' room on the property 😎
The see and hear pure nature, and couple of English people in Portugal….pure bliss,I see why you bought here.

Thanks, Joyce. We do our best! 😎
😊 your head was above the tiles and the wife’s was below. Love the videos
Haha, yes, it does look like that, but perspective can be very misleading. Jane's sensible enough to keep her head well out of the way 😂
Are you going to use a compacter on the broken roof tiles ?
We’ve tried various options and the best compromise so far is a manual compactor plate for the first round, then add the gravel and drive the car over it. Working well so far. 🛠️😎🇵🇹
What was the grey matting thst you put down underneath the waste roof tiles ?
It’s a geotextile fabric intended to stop weeds growing up in that area. It’s non-woven and a pain to cut but seems good otherwise. 👍
Lovely work. Yes, knowing that those screw plugs came from twigs on the property makes them beautiful and priceless. I know the feeling. You are so lucky to have a restorable home in Portugal.
Thanks Eric, yes, we are very lucky to have found it, and the odd little bonus like those screw pegs just make that little bit of personal difference. 🛠️🇵🇹😎
Bjinhos 🍀
You'll get by..with a little help from your friends😅

Another video showing much progress, fascia boards, tree pruning, driveway and tree tagging. It will be interesting to know the final count of trees on your property. Well done Jane, you are one patient woman.
Thanks, Pauline. I'm really intrigued to know the final total myself, but tagging them is quite a slow process🌲🌳🌲🌳💚
I order a road base material with fine material like dust.
Thanks, that’s good thinking - we are planning to do the same as a finishing layer. It binds everything together really well 🛠️😎🇵🇹
Guessing you got your fascia boards from Leroy noticed one split I laid 25 square meters of floor using the boards from them ordered 30 unfortunately they are the poorest boards you can get bananas is a good word for them and twisty very hard work to lay think you might have lucked out and actually got a straight pack nice work very ingenious the roof has given me ideas for my ruin next door
Thanks a lot, that’s good to hear. We learned the same lesson with Leroys some time ago. We now get our wood from the timber yard in Serpins, highly recommended. As well as some standard boards like I used on the fascia, they give me good quality dry timber in 6m lengths that I can cut down to what I need for each job. Much more economical and reliable that way. Any splits are more likely my dodgy joinery than the quality of the boards. 🪚🛠️😎🇵🇹
Phil has got so handy with that chainsaw. I remember he was so tentative with cutting that first olive tree, now you give him an inch, he takes a yard.😊
Just trying to keep him in check a bit Jean, so he doesn't get TOO carried away with himself and we end up with no trees 🌲🌳😂
I wonder if you could have hired a company who had a big roller to go back and forth over the tiles etc
Thanks Judith, it’s always there as an option. For now we are trying to do as much as possible ourselves while we wait for the planning process to go through for the main build, then it’s contractors all the way 🛠️🇵🇹😎
Thanks for sharing - great video
Glad you enjoyed it, and hope you'll keep on watching for more fun over the next few months😎🇵🇹
Each project is a great milestone....😊
It's great to feel we're finally getting somewhere, as it's far too easy to get overwhelmed with the mountain of jobs to do.😀🇵🇹
