One of my very spoilt badgers being picky.
this is Nippy, because she once had a little nip to see if I was edible and no she didn't break the skin, nibbling nuts and using her snout to push the ones she doesn't want aside. She's not as bad as another one that visits, who seems to have given up on peanuts altogether preferring much posher and more expensive nuts. Did I mention they are spoilt?

Trapezoidal threading tool jig from September 2018,
Переглядів 3679 місяців тому
I filmed this some years ago and wasn't impressed so didn't publish it but someone asked about it so here it is. Originally designed to work on my surface grinder but it will work equally well on a mill using a cup wheel in the quill and the jig in a vice and usual safety precautions.. The flat on the end of a threading tool can also be ground while in the jig and I have developed a measuring t...

A simple jig for keeping number stamps straight.
Переглядів 2,5 тис.4 роки тому
I recently had to do a half decent stamp job and I don't get enough practice to do it free hand so came up with this method. It worked remarkably well at keeping things straight but needs a slight addition to keep the stamps square rotationally or I need to take a little more care. The end section of the stamp was turned down from a taper to an 8mm round, which an easy task for a carbide insert...
3 wire PD measuring, best ever?
Переглядів 6144 роки тому
A 3 wire PD measuring gizmo, that works without any calculations. All that is required is to know the nominal diameter of the thread and the pitch. Each pitch set has an addition to be added to the nominal diameter, all other calculations have been done before to give the add on. Any further queries can be answered in the comments. A Roller burnishing tool, homemade.
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
A Roller burnishing tool for a better than turned finish, better even than a shear tool. Not only an improved tool mark free finish, it is better in other ways too. It improves hardness and fatigue life, or so it is claimed. This process seems to be virtually unknown in our end of the market and it is not for every job but is another useful tool to have in reserve for when it's useful. As alway...
A little gizmo for measuring the flat on the end of a single point threading tool.
Переглядів 8094 роки тому
This is especially for Mr Joe Pie, the machinists machinist, who was recently talking about threading tools and the flat on their end. I made this a good many years ago on a whim. Seemed a good idea at the time but once you have found an easy way to measure PD it became a bit of a novelty, but still valid.

    I knew about how to reset it, I have the same model. But, what is the tool called for resetting it? I can't find one, and I'd rather not go sticking a nail, screwdriver, or anything in it that's going to damage the rack. Thanks

      Now you have me there, I just call it a special tool but it is only a bit of bent wire. The wire is something like 0.6 to 0.8mm, although as long as it fits the slot you should be fine, just push it enough to disengage the rack, you can judge that be the depth of the teeth of the rack, no great force is needed. I could imagine that if you bought one from mitutoyo the price would be significant, so literally a paperclip is the probably an option.

    Actually a very useful tool if you want to make threads that are actually in spec. Your device gives me new ideas. A proper thread has specific sized flats that must be adhered to in order to meet the standard spec. For 20TPI threads the width of the flat at the root of the Male thread has to be between MIN.00625-->.0125MAX The width of the flat at the root of the Female thread has to be between MIN.003125-->.00625MAX The toolbit must be ground to cut those sized flats and ONLY those sized flats. Your device measures the distance from the point to the flat but a conversion gets the flat width. Which is: (your device Measurement) /.866 = flat width. So that tool you measured .0058 ish will cut a flat that is .0067 wide.👍=good for a male 20TPI! (but out of spec for a female) Conversely you can multiply the spec to get the required reading on your device For cutting a Male 20TPI thread: required flat width.00625 X .866 = .0054 measurement required flat width.0125 X .866 = .0108 measurement So your device will have to measure between .0054 -->.0108 for the flats to cut a proper sized flat for a Male 20TPI thread. For cutting a Female 20TPI thread: .003125 X .866 = .0027 measurement .00625 X .866 = .0054 measurement Your outside the box thinking has given me a pile of new ideas. I think I'll make one but I will trade the micrometer for an indicator for quick checking while grinding threading toolbits. I can only say thank you for this fun!

    • @chrisstephens6673
      @chrisstephens6673 9 місяців тому

      Glad you like the idea, I recently made one for trapezoidal threads where the flat is more important. While I was making that one I had an extra thought, if you measure the length of the tool before the flat is ground you can grind and measure how much shorter it is after grinding, then you could use a standsrd micrometer to make the measurement.

    • @billshiff2060
      @billshiff2060 9 місяців тому

      @@chrisstephens6673 Yes exactly my thought for grinding 60 deg tools . But I think it's hard for an trapezoidal thread because the un flattened tip is so long, there will be a lot of extra metal to grind to get to a point then grind it back. For 60 degree tools we usually grind a 60deg point then add the flat so it's not much metal. For an acme it would mean grinding maybe twice as much metal to get a point to measure from then grind it all off to get the flat. Your tool foregoes the extra grinding and zero's in on just the flat. You just have to calibrate it with a point but after that you don't need a point to start.

      PS, last week I made another gizmo, like screw cutting one in the other video, for measuring the flat of the tool, which is much more important on an acme or trapezoidal thread, but you can do the same by measuring from a sharp point to the other end and work out with trig how much shorter it should be with the correct flat width.

I have always been dextrous but I wouldn't have to be if there was enough room for a tripod.😉 Thanks for watching and commenting, this jig is much simpler than the 60 threading one you saw a few years back, if you remember it. I recently made a gizmo for measuring the flat, which as you know is more important on an acme or trapezoidal thread than an ordinary screw one. By the by, where's the meatloaf, I'm getting hungry. Over the past 40+ years, we simply use 2 large rubber bands. One around the moving jaw and parallel; one around the back jaw and parallel. Nothing to handle when swapping parts, blow/clearing away chips, etc. Easy on and Easy off when the job is finished.

      Indeed rubber bands work perfectly well, but I try to come up with things to make people think there are other than the established methods that have been about for decades. Thanks for the comment.

As I said I wasn't happy with the video so had no intention of posting but HaxbyShed asked for a picture after I mentioned it to him and I thought why not. The normal threading one is a bit cleverer because of the extra angles involved. Maybe I'll post a video one day.

      Why thank you kind sir! I assume that means you like it. Maybe I'll shoot a video of a slightly more complicated jig I made for 60 degree threads that incorporates a lead angle compensation. The trappy one is universal left or right hand. Both should be on the SMEE stand at the Midlands show next month along with the flat measuring tools.

    oh you are so lucky - is that a little baby in the first seconds of the video?? I live in the US and have met wild badgers here and they are quite different - more like squashed wolverines and not normally found around human habitations. Your beautiful sleek badgers are so different but I never knew you could tame one like that. Granted, I KNOW that took some special doings, whether trust, extreme patience, quietness and predictability, etc. It is so special to see - you must savor every moment. 🥰

      Thanks for the comment, yes and at my age it is about the only pleasure I get. I spend at least an hour every night from midnight on, although food is put out earlier often several times. Kilroy is no more but his descendants are still here. At the moment we have at least four that live at the far end of the garden, I have gained the trust of three which will eat from my hand but with this lot it took a great deal of patience and discovering that badgers love peanut butter sandwiches and will overcome their shyness to get more. The ones that won't take food from my hand are quite happy to have me watch them eat the other foods I put out for them. My favourite is so gentle when she takes food , not like her American cousins which I believe are quite vicious. Oh and in case you are worried we don't have nasties like rabies and in 15 or so years I have never been bitten by any of them.

      Re babies, we get between 2 and 4 most years but when we get to see them they seem almost as big as the adults. One year I was hand feeding the 4 youngsters, they were standing by the dwarf wall of our upper terrace, as can be seen in the videos, they were in a row and I was feeding them strips of dog food sausage in turn, it is to my eternal regret I didn't manage to film it.

    Trouble is with this idea is that when you use it the 3 wires are NOT parallel to each other ( they are forming a vee ) unless you clamp down hard with the micrometer and bend the single wire.

    • @chrisstephens6673
      @chrisstephens6673 Рік тому

      Thanks for the voicing your concern and at first glance a perfectly valid one but the wire is only copper and really quite bendy and the Mic anvils have no problem. I made a series and obviously the size went up with the longer pitch inline with the larger diameter of the screw. No system is perfect but this style saves the often quoted dislike of using 3 wires being that of dropping them in the chip tray or not having enough hands to use lhem. If I were to change the design next time it would be to make them spring closed not open but that is a small matter. Out of curiosity how did you find the video?

      @@chrisstephens6673 Thanks for a prompt reply. To answer you question as to how I found the video is because I am doing thread cutting using wires for only the second time in over 55 Years machining. I am helping out someone who is Interstate ( 1,000 kilometers away ) so I could not do the measuring myself. He wanted some lathe chuck backplates making 2 & 1/4" X 8 tpi. So that I would be sure that they would fit, I asked him to measure up his lathe spindle, length and diameters. I purchased for him a set of thread wires, which came with rubber wire holders for the Mic anvil. He did a series of measurements, varying by about 1 thou, so I picked the average. I made the dummy spindle yesterday and had to use my thread pins that were just in a plastic wallet, no rubbers. Ater a lot of fumbling and swearing I eventually got the measurement correct the same as his. Real nightmare to do as the 2 0.082" pins when fitted in an 8 tpi thread barely sat on the micrometer anvil. This morning I removed it from the chuck and did some remeasuring on the bench, still fidderly but checked out OK. I then sat and watched as many videos as I could find on how to hold the pins in place. Some said grease, some said rubber bands, others said stick them in foam, then I found your video, and the rest is history as they say. Just thought that I would point out that your device is not parallel and you would get an incorrect reading. But as you say the copper bends. If I ever need to do another thread measurement I will give your one a go, although perhaps with Piano Wire which is springy and less liable to crushing. Thanks for asking. Regards from Australia.

      @@daveticehurst4191 thanks for reply and as you say promptly. Re large threads, on the job I used to do on BMW bike heads I had to make a M50X2 exhaust stub and used copper wire but wound as a spring like a giant O-VEE spring thread gauge and one of the online thread calculators where you have an option to put any appropriate wire size in. I inherited a comprehensive collection of reels of copper wire but they don't always match with the PD charts size wise so the option to pick from a range in the calculator is helpful. Trans continental repairs can be problematic. I remember my friend Tom Lipton was asked by an Australian to make a plug for, I think, an x ray machine. It was thought to be a weird metric size one and Tom was going show how to cut a metric thread on an Imp lathe, till I pointed out it was a 26TPI BSB thread. So a three continent repair job, must be some sort of record🤣 If you improve my design and show it, let me know so I can see what you have done, please feel free to run with the idea but a mention would help an ageing ego.

Although again, I have never needed to use them, most times on small threads it is just tap and die method. Yes the Yanks don't seem to know about the UK BSB thread system. I had to tell Joe Pie on YT the other Month who was making a Stuart Model Engine and needed a 5/16 26 thread, I think he used an US thread in the end. Regards.
