3 wire PD measuring, best ever?

  • A 3 wire PD measuring gizmo, that works without any calculations. All that is required is to know the nominal diameter of the thread and the pitch. Each pitch set has an addition to be added to the nominal diameter, all other calculations have been done before to give the add on.

I think this configuration is a great way to dismiss the fumble finger factor. Nice job. Its one of those designs that screams, """how come someone didn't think of that before"""??? Have you ever checked a thread with only one wire? It doesn't get any easier than that. ( and most sets come with 2 spares)

And you can use them to hold your pants up when not measuring threads. Three wire measurements are one of those shop chores that everybody pretty much hates because of the loose wires.

Great idea Chris and much easier than faffing about with elastic bands and 3 wire rolls. Well done. If the asylum is where you come up with the ideas, then yes, please go back in for a while. Thanks, Jon

Love the idea Chris - nothing worse than trying to control individual wires. :)

Great idea! No more wires dropped in the swarf... Must try it, but I would probably use music wire or some harder springy material. And perhaps making the springy action the other way so they stay on? It would be easy enough to dedicate one for each diameter. Subscribed.

Excellent idea Chris. Made from Music wire might be more sturdy and springy. But great love it.

Brilliant. With these you don't need the inexistent third hand.

Yet another excellent and seemingly simple idea, Chris! Simple adding to a nominal dia makes for a fail-safe readout. I for one will probably opt for a couple of different ones at each pitch, with different coil spring diametres to ensure parallel wires when measuring, and perhaps even having the spring coil closing, to make it self-clamping on the thread under test - but then I only have 2 hands full of thumbs. Cheers, DIYSwede

    That's different . Great idea though . Cheers .

That's a really neat idea, Chris. I can't tell, are all the sets made out of the same size wire and then you just have a different figure over nominal?

You put some thought it to that didn’t you, great idea Chris I can only see one slight issue and that would be measuring a thread with a bigger od the the I’d in the wires, but that would be a rare occasion I recon, the labels make them so much easier to use also, you go to the top of the class with that one mate, 👍👍👍👍

Very cleaver;-) For nominal size threads, your design is quit elegant, and your labels are a nice touch. As Randy suggested, piano wire, or a similar hard wire, would be beneficial, but a pain to bend ;-(

Genius! Little Work Shop of Horrors sent me over here, and I love the idea. I will make up a set I think. Are you using any particular type of wire?

Great Idea, Chris! Simple and effective, but how did you calculate what wire diameter to use for a particular pitch? Many thanks!

hmmm. A fishing lure, wire bender, came to mind?

Trouble is with this idea is that when you use it the 3 wires are NOT parallel to each other ( they are forming a vee ) unless you clamp down hard with the micrometer and bend the single wire.

More than one way to skin a cat, anybody know what that One Way is?
