Or maybe the difference between amateur and professional? We used to make brake cables for old Triumphs and to check they were strong enough i make a jig to test them and they wouldn't break with a 500 pound load, somewhat in excess of BSI requirement which only needed they not break with hand power!? Thats a really nicely made and effective piece of equipment Chris, I really fancy making one myself, I dont suppose you have a drawing or sketch or even just rough dimensions you would be willing share please? I've made my own cables for over 50 years but seem to be making more and more lately after buying a few Bantams & a Mobylette to keep me occupied during "lockdown", sadly buying "correct size" stock cables from various suppliers has been quite a bit of a lottery. I've never really been happy with my attempts at simply splaying the ends prior to soldering it has never ever looked tidy and it is of course of questionable strength, to have the ability to make cable as nice as yours would be lovely. Thanks for comment, no drawings as it was a 'I know what I want and make it to suit' project. A work mate just designed a single size one about 40 years ago when we started making batches of preunit Triumph cables with a steel tube as part of the outer and wanted reliability. I dont have it to hand to measure it up but nothing is really critical in size save for the clamping of the cable.The only suggestion is to put 3 or 4 layer of printer paper between the two halves when drilling for the clamping holes and drill to size of the cable. The angled ' cups ' are fairly forgiving in size but you can judge from the video to get near enough. The punch part and cup were drilled, if memory serves, with a 'D' bit style 90 degree drill. I don't know your level of skill or equipment but a simple functional version could be made with only basic kit and a little ingenuity. I believe you can buy something similar from one of the major cable supply dealers but where is the fun in that?
@@chrisstephens6673 Thanks very much for the prompt response Chris, I would guesstimate the recess at 5/16" - 3/8" dia and same for depth? I can grind up a few 90° bits to suit, my only problem may be spinning the small bits fast enough, my old Bridgeport only runs to 4000 rpm. Should have a lump or two of EN36 here somewhere and some silver steel bar. Quite looking forward to making this. Regards Paul
@@paulfloyd228 I made mine from plain ordinary mild steel and the punch part from 1/4"(?) silver steel. If you have a bridgeport I assume you are more than capable of making it to your taste. Not saying this applies to you but sometimes when a gizmo is shown on UA-cam people ask for plans, perhaps thinking it will only work if an exact copy, Tom Lipton's multi axis work stop for instance being an example. Anyway, I feel that if you (you being general not you specific) think you need the item you have seen someone use you must be able to design/create one, once you have been given the idea to work from. Happy to give a sense of scale, in this case about 3 1/5 - 4" long but the rest is like the recipe says 'season to taste '😉 Any specific questions please ask. C

Tenby Severn thanks for the comment. As for the nipples, we had a hot dip solder pot which is great for industrial use but a bit difficult,but not impossible, for a home use. What does work quite well is a Weller style instant heat soldering iron, you can hang the cable and nipple from the loop while applying solder. Hope this helps answer your question. OOPS completely missed the right question. To answer your actual question. No, but a centre punch works quite well. I did once make a tool to put a double centre punch in the ferrules on the handles of woodturning tools but never thought to do one for cables.

If you can't make your own, do you know anyone with machinery who could. A simple version could be made with little more than a drill.

Very nice tool. Did you clamp the two pieces together and then drill the various holes?
Thanks for commenting, yes the holes were drilled when it was clamped and with a few pieces of paper in between to give extra clamping on the wire.
